the best swimsuit for your body type

With summer—a.k.a. swimsuit season—quickly approaching, you can expect to see us covering everything from beach body workout tips to summer recipes and everything in between here on the site. We also always do a few annual swimsuit shopping guides, which always get me in the mood to buy a new suit for summer. Now, I know what you’re thinking… Swimsuit shopping isn’t always exactly exciting. Especially if you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being in a badly-lit dressing room trying on half a dozen ill-fitting bathing suits. That doesn’t quite build up a girl’s confidence. But you know what does make swimsuit shopping more fun? Finding a style that truly fits and flatters your figure and sticking to that silhouette. I like to go into swimsuit shopping the same way I go into jeans shopping: I find a style or brand that fits and flatters my figure, and I just stick with it.

Today I’m covering some tips for said swimsuit shopping that are sure to help you do just that. You can think of it as my guide to finding the best swimsuit for your body type. My ideal method for swimsuit shopping involves celebrating your favorite feature of your body—instead of trying to hide your least favorite feature, which can create a negative body image. I don’t love the concept of boxing bodies into categories like apple, pear, hourglass, as I feel that it is limiting and not every body type can simply fit into one of these broad buckets. We all come in different shapes and sizes, and that should be celebrated by finding a bathing suit that lets your favorite feature shine so that you feel supported and confident. Below I’m sharing a little guide to finding the best swimsuit for your body type, complete with some shoppable must-haves for each category…

If you want to highlight your legs…

You might feel best in a high waisted bikini or a one-piece. The high-waisted bikini has become such a popular style in the last couple years, and I love it for its glamorous, retro feel. The high waisted silhouette will elongate and draw attention to your legs, if that’s the feature you’re most proud of. A one-piece that is cut to hit a little higher on your thighs can also do the same trick—averting attention away from your mid-section and towards your legs and arms. Here are a few of the styles I’m loving…

If you want to accentuate your chest…

Go for a triangle bikini or low-cut one-piece. These necklines do a successful job at flattering your bust or even creating an illusion of a fuller chest, if that’s what you’re trying to achieve. I love a plunging neckline for adding interest to your décolletage. And, if you’re looking to add a little extra lift to your chest, a padded bra-style bikini top can create that illusion. Luckily, these bathing suits are easy to come by and quite popular. Here are a few of my favorites…

If you want chest support…

If your chest is one of your most prominent features but you don’t feel comfortable wearing more revealing necklines and like having a little more support, a halter-top swimsuit may be for you. It will sit higher up on your chest than a triangle or low-cute neckline, allowing you to feel supported. I designed this printed halter top bikini and this black halter top bikini for my LC Lauren Conrad line this season. It’s a great option for both heavy-chested and small-chested ladies alike. If you want to accentuate your waist…

If your waist is your favorite feature, the easiest way to draw attention to it is by choosing a suit that has a color blocked or belt detail. This will draw the eye into the waist and create a very balanced, hourglass effect. I personally love this look because it’s flattering on most people, especially if you like one-pieces in the first place. Here are some great styles…

If you want to accentuate your booty…

If your behind is a feature you are proud of, or if you’d like to create the illusion of having a little more shape in this area, I recommend going for a bikini or one-piece that has ruching details on the bottom or waistline (like this style from my LC Lauren Conrad line) or strategic cut-outs. These styles can make a flat booty look perkier. String bikini bottoms can help too, as having less coverage on the sides can create a wider appearance. Shop the styles below to see what I mean…

If you want to accentuate your abs…

Try an athletic-inspired bikini or a cut-out one-piece. I am loving all of the feminine yet sporty bikinis I’ve been seeing on my favorite shopping sites lately, with tops that fit like a super flattering sports bra, and bottoms that hit at the right rise and aren’t too skimpy on the booty. If you’re looking to accentuate your abs and you’re proud of your mid-section, this style will have you looking and feeling great. If you have a taut tummy, you might also love trying a cut-out one-piece style that draws attention to your middle. Here are some fun styles I’ve been loving lately…
