how to choose which investment pieces you won't regret buying

While I do love covering seasonal trends here on the site (check out my Currently Craving column if you haven’t already), you all probably know by now that writing about investment pieces is really my cup of tea. I’ve covered this topic before, but recently decided it was about time to do a refresh. The best thing about investment pieces is that, even though they may cost a pretty penny, you will have them for years (and in some cases, a lifetime). They are the classic pieces you know you can grab and feel good in. And, you can count on them for being those staple items you can build on when creating an outfit. So without further ago, here are eight investment pieces you will never regret buying…

1. Classic handbag.
If you remember reading this post about investment handbags, you’d know that I place high value on having a classic bag that goes with everything in your wardrobe. This is an item that you will have forever, if you take good care of it. Opt for a style in a neutral color like black, navy, gray or beige, as it will go with anything from jeans and a T-shirt to a cocktail dress. Go for a medium sized bag so that you can wear it in all different circumstances—from work to happy hour. I’ve pulled some of my favorite styles below…

2. Classic pumps.
Mark my words: You will never regret investing in a beautiful pair of black classic pumps. Heel styles and toe shapes will come and go with the trends, but a medium-height heel and a rounded pointy toe will always be a classic. Shop these styles below…

3. Elegant strappy sandals.
While we’re on the topic of footwear, it’s also a great idea to invest in a strappy heeled sandal. I recently invested in a very nice two-strap pair—with one strap around the ankles, one over the toes. This style is so flattering and investing in a nice pair will ensure that they will be comfortable and last you for years. They look great with dresses, pants, skirts, and everything in between, so you really can’t lose.

4. Ballet flats.
My last category of investment footwear comes in the form of ballet flats. My favorite pairs of on-trend ballet flats is this scalloped pair from my LC Lauren Conrad collection. While they might not be at an investment price point, they are versatile styles and all of mine have held up very well over the years. However, I also think there is something to be said about having a splurge-worthy pair in your arsenal as well. If they are made well, they will be a pair of shoes you’ll always reach for on days when you want to be comfortable on your feet. Loafers are also a great flat shoe to invest in too. I’ve rounded up a few pairs of each below…

5. Dainty everyday jewelry.
I believe there is a time and place for trendy statement jewelry (hello, tassel earrings and chunky cocktail rings!), but I also feel strongly that it’s important to have those beautiful, dainty everyday pieces in your jewelry collection as well. The latter are the ones to splurge on. A pair of pearl studs, a diamond bar necklace, a simple diamond pave ring… These are the styles you can build on, no matter what trends may come and go. My everyday jewelry pieces are of course my engagement ring and diamond eternity wedding band, my diamond pave hoops, and the rose gold diamond bar necklace I gave my bridesmaids on my wedding (I got one for myself too). Here are some other favorites…

6. Trench coat.
A classic trench will immediately elevate any outfit, and it’s a great piece for braving a rainy day. Burberry and Ralph Lauren make beautiful, classic styles, and I’ve recently designed this blush pink trench for my latest LC Lauren Conrad collection. You can wear a trench coat with almost any outfit to add warmth or keep dry in the rain. Think of them as the stylish investment version of a not-so-chic raincoat. Here are my favorite styles…

7. Blazer.
This chic and classic jacket style isn’t just for your office attire—it is a great staple to wear with jeans, shorts, and off-duty looks too. A nice blazer will immediately make any ensemble look polished and professional, so it’s a great item to have if you often take your looks from day to night. You can invest in a navy, cream or black style—I recommend having all three!

8. LBD.
Every girl should have a killer LBD that can be worn to almost any event. From weddings to cocktail parties, investing in a quality and flattering LBD will do your closet good. Make sure you find one in a silhouette and fabric that suits your figure and your personal style. I promise you’ll find yourself reaching for it again and again, and you’ll be glad you went for an investment style instead of one you’ll grow tired of after a few wears…
