Fashion Week: NYFW Beauty Trends Recap

recapping NYFW beauty trends on

Fashion Week may be over for the time being, but we’re still reveling over the gorgeous and easy-to-achieve beauty trends that we saw in New York earlier this month. It’s no surprise that most trends on the runway may be a tad bit exaggerated for everyday wear, and sometimes hair and makeup follows suit. But this season we were pleasantly surprised by what we saw parading down the runways. Bronzed skin, sleek hair, and pops of natural hues dominated the backstage beauty scene and we couldn’t love it more if we tried. I was able to take an up close and personal glance at hair and makeup during the hustle and bustle, and to say I was inspired would be an understatement. To learn this season’s top beauty secrets, keep scrolling to see what the pros had to say about hair, makeup and nails during New York Fashion Week…

If I were to describe the hair scene in one word it would be uncomplicated. Shows such as Club Monaco, KUHO and Nicole Miller opted for a more elevated everyday beauty. I saw a lot of tousled waves and disheveled curls; the stylists seemed to play up the models’ natural texture. On the other hand, while backstage at the Linder show, stylists were giving the models stick straight long hair, complete with waist-length extensions. It gave the show a bit of drama, but still a very achievable look.

My absolute favorite hair moment had to be the sleek yet textured ponytails at the Banana Republic presentation. Stylists were creating a sleek and dry contrast by securing a tight ponytail, spritzing the middle part with Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Hairspray and setting it with a blow dryer. For extra volume in the back, sea salt spray was worked into the ponytail while pieces here and there were wrapped around a 1 ½-inch curling iron. Some models even had a piece of velvet ribbon tied around their ponytail while others had a fishtail braid.

Next up on the list we have makeup. There was some serious talent backstage during Fashion Week and it was incredible to see the makeup artists work their magic. Most of the drama was reserved for the Linder runway show. Models wore a simple, natural eye with bold lips. Because who doesn’t love something a little darker this time of year? The makeup backstage at the Nicole Miller show was deemed safari-chic. For extra luminous skin, the models faces and lips were prepped with moisturizer beforehand, followed by a smudged eye and bronze skin. The makeup artists opted for strategic bronze and highlight, and gave each model a berry-bitten lip.

Using all Stila products, the makeup artists at the Banana Republic presentation were giving the models a classic timelessness inspired by the collection. Each model was given bolder brows and elongated eyes. This look was achieved by easy to work with eyeliner applied halfway on the lash line, essentially opening the eyes. The artists then opted for skin texture on the eyelids as opposed to a matte or ultra-shiny eyeshadow look. The look was then polished off with a velvet cheeks and a punchy berry lip color (Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Elyssa to be exact!).

Last but certainly not least, we have nails. While they may not take center stage, nails have an equally big part in setting the scene for each look. At most of the backstages that I attended, I kept seeing different hues of green nail polish. Nicole Miller’s models were donning Essie ‘Exposed’, which is a mossy, khaki green. Then again at Banana Republic I was met with rounded nails painted with a darker shade of green. To match their dramatic lip, Linder’s models had bold black nails filed into an almond shape. So ladies, don’t be afraid to go dark this season!
