Summer is here, and you know what that means: It’s time for longer days, relaxed evenings and incredible vacations. Fortunately, though, summer is not just about kicking back—it’s also a perfect time to set some new health and fitness goals. Here at Team LC, we’re constantly striving to be the healthiest we can be (click over to the Get Fit section of the site here for more workouts and healthy tips). So today, we’ve rounded up a list of the ten fitness and wellness goals we’re going to be working on this summer. By sharing these, we’re hoping you can all keep us accountable every step of the way! Want to join? Read on…
1. Cut out junk food.
As easy as it is to reach for the salty chips or crave-worthy chocolate, we all want to get better about our junk food consumption. This summer, we’re planning to nix the processed foods and instead reach for fruits, veggies, healthy nuts and lean protein when we need a little pick-me-up. Need some help knowing what healthy options to eat? We’ve got you covered here.
2. Drink more water.
One of the easiest ways to have a healthier summer? Drinking more water! We’re usually aim to drink at least the recommended 64 ounces a day. But in this summer sun, we should be drinking even more H20. Drinking enough water is not only refreshing and great for your skin, but it keeps you energized and allows your entire body to function at its best.
3. Get more sleep.
Unfortunately, when we’re busy and stressed, our sleep schedule is often the first health priority to be neglected. This is rough on all parts of our bodies, as the amount of sleep we get directly relates to how well we function throughout the day. Getting more sleep not only gives us more sustainable energy, it also allows our bodies to function at their best. As Lauren says, they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!
4. Find a new workout class we love.
Gone are the days of boring group classes or hours spent miserably on the elliptical. There are so many different ways to sweat it out and new workout studios popping up daily, so this summer we are set on trying something new and finding a workout we love. Make it a goal with us this summer to try a variety of new kinds of workout classes; spin, pilates, Zumba—you name it. Plus, lots of studios offer your first class free, so you have nothing to lose when just trying it out.
5. Go to yoga 2-3 times a week.
While there are indeed a lot of new kinds of classes to try, it’s important to stick to a routine that works for us as well. We love the restorative, toning, centering and relaxing aspects of yoga classes, so we’re vowing to make them a more consistent part of our weekly schedule. Want to join us? Aim to fit in a few vinyasas 2-3 evenings or mornings per week.
6. Take up meditating.
Life is way too short to feel constantly stressed. But, at the same time, it is unrealistic to expect that we won’t feel a little strung out when juggling a busy social schedule, clocking in long work days, and basically trying to “do it all.” Thankfully, meditation—which helps to center us and calm us down—can be done anywhere, at any time. Thanks to new apps like Headspace, you can learn the art of meditation in your home, on your commute, in your car or even in the office. Taking a few moments out of each day to center our minds can go a long way in terms of our overall health.
7. Track our goals.
While you may be able to feel the benefits of your new healthy lifestyle, it’s often helpful to see them as well. Here at Team LC, we love our fitness trackers. Visually setting goals for number of steps, calories burned and resting heart rate can help you make the most of both workouts and resting time. Bonus: You can challenge your friends, which helps to hold you accountable!
8. Run farther than we could before.
While we may not all be marathon runners, we can all set goals more feasible to our own bodies. If you’re like us and want to log in longer runs this summer, start first by taking a quick test: Set a timer, then jog lightly for as long as you can. If it’s only a few minutes, don’t worry. Make it your goal to run even a few minutes farther than that. But if it’s a long time, don’t be afraid to really push yourself for an even longer goal. The summer is an amazing time to create (and dominate) lofty goals. And we sure plan on logging in extra minutes on our favorite running paths.
9. Eat more fruits and veggies.
Summer is the perfect time to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Not only are they refreshing in the heat, but many fruits and vegetables are most in-season during the summer months. Need a quick and easy way to get in some extra nutrients? Try a summer spinach salad topped with strawberries and cucumbers, then munch on some watermelon poolside to satisfy that sweet tooth in a healthy way. Nutritious, delicious, and refreshing!
10. Spend more time outside.
Finally, the summer is one of our favorite seasons for a reason: the amazing weather and longer days! Don’t let this summer pass you by without stepping out for a hike, some quiet time outdoors with a book, or a bike ride with a friend. Fresh air and Vitamin D are two of nature’s greatest medicines, and we’re planning on embracing the great outdoors all summer long.
