To finish the month off strong, today I’m sharing tips on how to network on social media like a professional. Move over LinkedIn, there’s plenty of networking to go around! Gone are the days of Instagram being used solely for sharing pretty photos. Nowadays you can score an internship, collaborate on projects, and make lasting, professional contacts at the tips of your fingers. If you’re looking to make an impact in your career, learning how to network on social media is going to help you out in the long run.

Like most professional ways of communication (i.e. writing emails and polishing your résumé) there is a right and a wrong way to network. Since I’ve already covered face-to-face networking on the blog before, I wanted to dedicate a post specifically geared towards networking on social media. Below you’ll find five tips that will come in handy if you’re looking to connect with other professionals and get your name on the map.

1. Groom your feed.

First things first, you always want to maintain a positive and professional appearance on all of your channels. Similar to what you’ve learned in social media 101, never post a photo or status that you wouldn’t want a potential employer or professional contact to see. It may serve you well to create both a professional and a personal account to keep business and pleasure separate. It’s helpful to keep your bio or about me section well-groomed as well, letting others know who you are and what you do without getting too wordy.

2. Know your social media platforms.

Becoming well versed in all social media platforms can give you a leg up in the professional world. If you’re researching a potential brand or professional connection, find out what their preferred social media platform is and use it to your advantage. LinkedIn is often the easiest way to find a contact and introduce yourself, but you’d be surprised at how many businesses communicate through Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as well.

3. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

Take a deep breath and relax. It can be nerve-racking to put yourself out there, regardless of whether it’s in person or online. Just remember: nothing ventured, nothing gained! Who knows, you could be missing out on a career changing opportunity or a beneficial connection if you don’t put yourself out there.

4. Get to the point.

There’s a time and a place for a cover letter, and social media may not be one of them. Take time to practice and secure a strong introduction. Be sure to keep it short, sweet and to the point. Always introduce yourself, your business, and get right to the point. That way your message won’t get lost in translation, and is less likely to be misunderstood. Be sure to mind your p’s and q’s and leave your contact information. Being polite and thanking someone for their time is always beneficial!

5. Don’t expect a response.

It’s true, no one likes to be rejected. It can’t hurt you to send a follow up message after your initial introduction. But if radio silence ensues, it might be best to focus your attention on your next potential connection, or pursue another channel other than social media.

With these five tips under your belt, you’re well on your way to being a social media networking professional.
