Learn the benefits of cooking at home

It’s the same story every year, but one we can all relate to… It’s the first week of the new year and we’re geared up and motivated to be our best selves for the next 12 months. We’ve renewed our gym memberships, balanced our checkbooks, written our positive affirmations, and signed up to volunteer with our favorite charity. Sounds familiar, right? The buzz that ensues when a new year begins is intoxicating and inspiring, to say the least. And we must admit that we totally hop on the bandwagon. But aside from our usual work out more and get more sleep goals, this year all of us on Team LC have added a new resolution into the mix. In an effort to save money on takeout, eat healthier, and become better home chefs, we’re all vowing to cook more meals at home.

Learn how to save on meals, eat healthier, and become a better chef at home

This resolution is one that all of us share, which will help us keep each other in check and stay accountable. And, we have some tried-and-true tools of the trade we’ll be turning to in order to accomplish this goal. Enter: Blue Apron, a meal delivery service that allows us to create delicious, chef-designed recipes at home. Blue Apron does all of the hard work for us by delivering perfectly-portioned, farm-fresh ingredients and a recipe card right to our doorstep. Let’s just say that avoiding the grocery store and cooking delicious meals never felt so satisfying! So, without further ado, today we’ll be showing you how we’re sticking with our New Year’s resolution and making more home-cooked meals in 2017 with a little help from Blue Apron

The first thing we do when we place our monthly Blue Apron order is look at all of the delicious meal options on their site. From Spiced Lentil Stew to Sesame Chicken to Fresh Linguine Pasta, the Blue Apron menu offers a huge selection of melt-in-your-mouth dishes that you can prepare in 40 minutes or less. And, this weekly-changing menu is comprised of meals that are 500-800 calories per person made with farm-to-table ingredients—so you know exactly what you’re eating. Healthy and home-cooked… Talk about checking off those New Year’s resolutions!

How to make healthy home meals with Blue Apron

Once we unbox our Blue Apron ingredients and the recipe card that comes along with them, it’s time for the best part: to get cooking! Each recipe card tells you exactly how to make your dish in six easy steps or less. And, if we do say so ourselves, we’ve become better cooks in the kitchen since using Blue Apron. Julienne the carrots? Check. Pan-sear the ahi tuna? Been there, done that. It’s a great learning experience for any budding chef, and seeing exactly what ingredients you are putting into your meal guarantees it will be wholesome and satisfying.

Our experience with Blue Apron

We like to stick with the two-person meal plan when we order, which makes having friends over for dinner so simple and fun. It’s the perfect excuse to get together in the kitchen and cook with friends. And, if you’re cooking for yourself, Blue Apron leftovers have proven to be just as delicious the next day. We recently whipped up Blue Apron’s Sweet Potato & Kale Hash and Chicken with Sautéed Carrots and Gravy. We enjoyed a healthy weeknight get-together with great food and good conversation about our goals for the new year to come…

I too am going to spend more time in the kitchen! With work, it’s been hard juggling the time to go grocery shopping and meal prepping, but I’d love to slow down and cook more. This past weekend I did just that – even throwing together stuff I already had, which I never do (I’m a “always needs a recipe” kind of girl). I’m excited to get back into it!

Blue Apron sounds freaking amazing! How have I not heard of this before?!

  • Antonina Parris-Yarbrough

I literally just made the sweet potato and kale hash last night for dinner! Blue Apron has been a lifesaver for me this past year – it is so nice to have the recipes and ingredients on weeknights, and I always feel like I’m eating fancy!

  • I love the idea of Blue Apron, but I really wish they had a 1-person serving option. As someone who is single, I struggle to make healthy balances meals that don’t have excess food that goes to waste. Maybe one day they’ll make a plan for 1! That would be AMAZING!

  • Great post! I also would like to cook more this year. I actually received a few great cookbooks for Christmas that I am so excited to work through. Meals are just so much yummier when they come out of my kitchen 😉

My goal is to slow my life down so that I enjoy cooking at home more. Sometimes I am just so exhausted that I don’t enjoy it!

As a college student, I love Blue Apron! It makes my life super easy and gives me new things to try. I also really like The Unprepared Kitchen. It helped me get started cooking for myself and taught me how to pair foods and make them my own. The positive or negative, (depending on how you look at it) is you have to do your own grocery shopping. But she makes a detailed grocery list for you and focuses on portion sizes.
