It seems like these days, most of us are on the hunt for anything to make us feel happier, healthier, and more balanced. And even though I’ve been sticking with my workout routine, eating as healthy as possible, and keeping my work/life balance in check to the best of my abilities, I’m still searching for other ways to improve my everyday happiness and quality of life. So imagine my excitement when my sweet friend Ali mentioned that she had just started her own business, Alignment with Ali, as a Reiki Master and Healer! I personally didn’t know much about Reiki (just that it’s “energy healing”) but had always been intrigued by the idea of it, so I immediately booked a session with her. And today, I’m sharing exactly what happened, how it made me feel, and all of the details that you should know about Reiki. So first, let’s start with the basics and then I’ll get into what happened when I had my first session.
What is Reiki?
Here’s how Ali defines it: “Reiki is a subtle healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. Light, still touch in a sequence of hand placements invites a meditative state that’s calming and balancing. A quiet, relaxed body and mind gives a foundation for healing and as a result, Reiki treatment elicits a self-healing response. On the surface, Reiki treatment promotes release of tension and stress, relief of pain, lessening of anxiety and greater clarity. At a deeper level, Reiki treatment gently and subtly connects us to a place of inner spaciousness and peace clearing the mind, restoring the body and refreshing the spirit.”
Why Choose Reiki?
With so many health and wellness options out there, why should someone give Reiki a try? Ali says, “With the increase of stress and pressure in our daily lives (personal, professional and everything in between), it’s understandably difficult to find time to deal and reset within our day. Reiki, similar to meditation, provides us this reset that can be just as powerful in 10 minutes as it is in 60 minutes. We all experience imbalances and challenges reveal themselves in different ways, but the connectivity and balance that Reiki provides creates this lasting and powerful foundation for us all to live each day as our best selves.” And who wouldn’t want to live their best life? How Do You Find a Reiki Healer?
When I asked Ali about this, she said it’s been hard in the past as the best way has been either through word of mouth or looking it up online. More and more, however, holistic doctors, wellness centers and even fitness studios (yoga, pilates, etc.) are referring clients to Reiki practitioners or are offering treatments themselves. What Happens During Reiki?
I really didn’t know what to expect when Ali came to my apartment one night (yes, she makes house calls!) with a massage table, a pillow, and some blankets. We sat on my couch for a little bit and chatted about what Reiki is, how she got into it, and what would happen over the next 60 minutes or so. Then, I got onto Ali’s table that she brought to my house, got under the covers, and closed my eyes. Ali turned on some super relaxing music and got to work. She essentially put her hands in different places on my body for the next 60-ish minutes, and I have quite possibly never been more relaxed. The idea is that she was opening up my chakras to allow energy to flow into my body and go where it needed to. She switched up her hand positions, and moved up and down my body until she was done. I spent the entire time in a state of pure relaxation, on the verge of falling asleep. When it was over, I felt like I had just had the most restful night’s sleep, and could feel how relaxed my entire body was.
How Do You Feel After a Session?
It’s hard to put into words how I felt after my Reiki session. It was a sense of calm and peace that I haven’t really experienced before. I had been a little bit stressed earlier that day, and after Ali was finished I felt like every ounce of anxiety had left my body. I was also in the process of recovering from a sprained foot, and when I woke up the next morning my foot felt noticeably better. I immediately texted Ali to tell her, and she said that while Reiki doesn’t heal your body that way, it’s possible that it was able to relieve stress and negative energy in my body so that my foot could actually begin to heal. Ali recommended that I get a treatment once a month, or really whenever I felt like I needed to get back in balance. All I can say is that I seriously can’t wait for my next session!
Keep in mind: each session is unique to the client in both the sessions themselves and the overall experiences and outcomes, so this is just my own personal experience.
