When we heard that our editor Ilana was doing a mini makeover of her living room, we knew we had to share it with everyone here on the site! After all, who doesn’t love a good before-and-after décor story? Ilana had been struggling with finding the perfect floor plan for her front room for a while now, so she decided to call in the interior design experts at Havenly for some much-needed help. Here’s Ilana to share the story below…
I’ve struggled with this space for the whole seven years that we’ve lived in this house, but I always thought hiring an interior designer would be out of my price range… Until I heard about Havenly. In our home, we have a second living room area where we entertain guests and watch TV, but I needed this front room to be a great functional entryway—with some space to sit and hang out as well! Our front door opens right into this room, so we have no real entryway and desperately needed a makeshift one (a spot to hang hats, bags, etc.). Plus, we have a no-shoes-in-the-house policy, so shoes tend to pile up and we needed a serious storage solution. I also wanted the room to look a bit more refined and grownup, but I didn’t know where to start. The furniture felt a little hodge-podge and the size/scale of everything wasn’t quite right (I knew the rug was too small, for instance). After rearranging furniture a million times myself, I decided to do something I’d never done before and called in professional interior design help from Havenly.
Some of you may have heard us mention Havenly on the site before, which is the same way I learned about them! After Havenly created a décor mood board for our LC.com office, I could not wait to try them in my own living space. Havenly is an online interior décor service that pairs you with a professional interior designer who is perfectly suited to your style. They walk you through the entire design process online or on their easy-to-use app, making your Pinterest-perfect dream room a reality. Havenly offers a mini package that’s only $79, but even the full design package that I went with costs a grand total of $199. The process was simple, efficient, and most of all, fun! For those of you who are curious, I’ve documented the entire process below, including all of the ‘after’ photos!
I started by filling out a room profile. I answered a ton of multiple-choice questions, and also included any pertinent info about my style, my vision for the space, the pieces I already owned and wanted to keep, and my budget (which was only a couple thousand dollars for this project). Havenly then paired me with my designer, Kylee. I told Kylee even more specifics, like the fact that we have a toddler so everything has to be kid-friendly, but that style is still very important to us. We like clean, mid-century modern design, but also love color and playful little touches. Our pieces are a mixture of new and vintage… I love a good flea market find, but also love Anthropologie or Design Within Reach. After getting all of that info, Kylee started the process by pulling together three design ideas…

From those three ideas, I picked my favorites (No. 1 and No. 2) and also gave Kylee specific feedback on what I did and didn’t like from each. After that, Kylee expanded my two favorite ideas into more detailed design concepts:
I once again gave feedback, and chose my favorite overall concept (No. 2!). That’s where the real fun began: the floor plan!
I loved seeing a mockup of how the pieces would actually look in the space. I was able to envision the whole thing so clearly now, which was helpful to see before making any purchases. From there I visited my personalized shopping list on the Havenly app, and ordered the new pieces that I needed to complete the space.

I’m so excited with the way everything turned out! It looks so much more refined and pulled together now. I was able to give Kylee as much feedback as I needed each step of the way, and she swapped products in and out accordingly. She really seemed to understand my style and what I needed the room to be. Havenly made hiring an interior designer so easy and affordable! Now I just have to decide which room to makeover next…
