See the most stylish trends seen on the streets of NYC during 2016 NYFW

If you follow us on Instagram (@LaurenConrad_com), you probably noticed some New York Fashion Week photos popping up on your feed last week. Well, that’s because two of us traveled to the Big Apple to catch the Spring 2017 shows. It’s a fun, whirlwind of a week—one that requires lots of coffee, comfortable shoes (or at least ones to change into while walking to and from shows), and a fully charged phone ready to snap photos. Designers showed their Spring 2017 collections at this year’s September Fashion Week, while makeup and hair stylists were busy backstage perfecting looks that reflected each collection. And while watching the shows can provide a plethora of style inspo for the upcoming season, there are plenty of sartorial moments happening on the actual sidewalks during NYFW.

For an entire week, fashion editors, bloggers, and influencers dress to the nines and take over the streets of SoHo, followed by photographers who are snapping street style photos like crazy. We came home from fashion week feeling uber inspired by street style moments we saw on real-life women walking to and from fashion shows. So today, I’m breaking down the top six trends we saw during NYFW, and including products you can shop to get the look. Ready to give your wardrobe a little dose of cool-girl style? Here we go…

LC Runway Lace-Trim Cami

Silk Pieces

Despite the hot and humid temps in the city, silk pieces were all over the sartorial sidewalks. From lacy camis to slinky slip dresses, this trend is easy to wear with all kinds of accessories. Pair your silk pieces with a leather jacket to add some edge; wrap a flannel around your waist to dress down your silk slip dress; make your silk romantic with a bold lip and retro curls—the options are endless! I wore the silk LC Runway cami shown above on our first day of fashion week and I can’t tell you how many compliments it got. Trust me when I say that this piece is a must-have.

 NYFW Street Style: Mom Jeans

Mom Jeans

You might remember us highlighting this trend back in July with our post about 10 pieces you need to perfect your summer wardrobe. Well, ladies, the mom jean is here to stay… At least for a little longer. This silhouette of denim is defined by its straight leg, distressed details, raw hems, ankle-length crops and high waist. If you find a pair that fits your figure well, mom jeans are incredibly flattering. They also pair well with end-of-summer sandals, fall booties, and mules (more on those later). Store your skinnies in your closet for now—this relaxed denim style is fall’s “It” jean.

NYC street style during DYFW: cold-shoulder and one-shoulder tops

Cold-Shoulders and One-Shoulders

Off-the-shoulder was all the range this spring and summer, but now that we move into fall, we’re starting to see this trend evolve. You heard it here first: The new off-the-shoulder is the cold-shoulder and the one-shoulder. These two silhouettes still keep that flirty feel while allowing for a more structural and interesting design. And, in case you were wondering if this trend is going to carry into spring, the runways were a telltale sign: At Self Portrait’s show on Saturday, many looks included asymmetrical one-shoulder tops and dresses, and cold-shoulder pieces too.

The Flat Mule

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: The flat mule is the shoe to buy this season. Not only is it the most convenient style of slip-ons for the fall, but these shoes were also seen on major fashion magazine editors, deeming them instantly in style. The best part about this trend is that it’s transitional. While we’re waiting for temps to cool down and feel a little more autumn (especially in LA), flat mules are a great close-toed option to wear before you bring out the boots.

NYFW street style trend: circle bags

Circle Bags

If you jumped on the bucket bag bandwagon, then you’re going to love the new handbag silhouette of the season: The circle bag. This chic statement piece adds a structural element that will elevate your entire outfit. We saw this trend come in all shapes, sizes and colors during fashion week—big circle bags, mini circle bags, you name it.

Chokers aren’t new on the trend scene—we posted about this ‘90s comeback back in March. However, just because they aren’t new doesn’t mean they weren’t everywhere during fashion week. Black velvet, skinny, gold, layered—you name it—chokers are a big trend this fall. Wear yours with a T-shirt and blazer… or a silk slip dress if you want to hit two trends in one!
