The Proper Way to Drink Wine by LaurenConrad.com

It’s no secret by now that all of us on Team LC love to enjoy a glass of wine with good company over a delicious meal. And as women in our late 20s and early 30s, we feel we’ve hit what we call a “happy hour milestone” where we’ve finally gotten to a point where our palettes can tell an average wine from a great wine. This means we want to know more about wine than just the alcohol percentage, and it’s a pretty big step if you ask us! So, we’ve recently been researching more about the do’s and don’ts of adult drinking and lucky for us, Club W—the wine club reinvented—has helped to answer most of our burning questions!

We joined Club W about a year ago, and it’s been an absolute must as we’ve explored the wide world of wine. By making the wine world less confusing, Club W has helped us feel confident about picking out our own wine. From the moment we signed up, they worked with us to match delicious but affordable wines to our personal taste preferences. Plus, getting bottles delivered right to our doorstep is pretty amazing!

When you’re a member of Club W, your monthly box comes with wine cards that give you information on each bottle, and the Club W app even has a virtual sommelier who can walk you through your favorite bottles. Club W is way more than just a box of wine… This service also taught us a few things about ordering the right glass of vino at restaurants, how to pair wine with food, and tips for entertaining at home.

So today we’re here to break down everything we’ve learned about wine from Club W in hopes that these fun facts will enhance your own future happy hours. Without further ado, here are seven useful and interesting facts you should know about wine before you plan your next sipping session…

Which wine should you buy?

We’ve all been there: frustrated and confused, standing in the wine aisle and staring at thousands of bottles that all look the same. Without an understanding of what the stuff on the label actually means (bold? acidic? tannic?), we’re always left choosing wine (the best way we know how) by the prettiest label. It can be a total hit-or-miss! But all of this changed with Club W. They start from scratch with a fun little quiz, asking you six easy questions about your personal tastes (such as “Do you like frappuccinos?”). From there, they match wine to your palate, explaining why you’ll enjoy each bottle’s flavor profile. This quickly helped us learn about our own palates and we soon felt like pros when ordering at restaurants. Club W also realizes that we all love a gorgeous bottle, so every wine carries a unique, custom-designed label. Moral of the story: If you use Club W to order your wine, you can pick your bottles by the label (or by the wine description), and you’ll never be disappointed. Win, win.

Your biggest wine questions answered on LaurenConrad.com today

What is the proper temperature for wine?

Just like all food and drink, wine can taste different when served at different temperatures. You wouldn’t serve lukewarm coffee or melted ice cream, right? The same goes for wine. Here are rules of thumb from Club W:

  • Red wine: Room temperature or a touch below. Don’t be afraid to put your reds in the fridge for a few minutes before opening.
  • White wine: For whites with roundness and richness, it’s helpful to let them warm up in the glass as you drink.
  • Champagne, sparkling wine, and rosé: Ice cold

The basics of wine and party planning by LaurenConrad.com

What are the basics of wine and party planning?

As you all know, we love hosting get-togethers and will find any excuse to do so. Girl’s nights, team happy hours, dinner parties—the answer is always yes. Club W is great not only because of their large variety of wines but because they actually tell you where to drink them. Backyard BBQ? Romantic date? You can receive the perfect variety of wines to match your exact occasion. It’s also good to know how many bottles of wine to serve at your party. You can assume each person will want 2 glasses throughout the night. Since each bottle typically has 4 pours, just multiply your number of guests by 2, and then divide by 4 to get the number of bottles you should order for the event. Easy as that!

A lesson in Wine 101

What’s a decanter and how do I use it?

We used to think a decanter was just some fancy, unnecessary object that we never knew how to use, but we’ve learned that a decanter is a vessel that allows wine to breathe (softening the wine’s harsh edges). The best way to use a decanter is to pour your red wine into it, let it sit for 30 to 45 minutes, and then serve it. When we receive our monthly Club W boxes, the wine cards that come inside tell us if each wine should be decanted or not. This adds so much to our unboxing experience and makes us look like pros when entertaining.

How long does wine stay good after opening?

We’d wondered about this one for years until recently, so we’ll break it down for you below. We can’t tell you how much this little chart has helped us when we’ve needed it:

  • Opened white wine: 5-7 days (in the fridge)
  • Opened red wine: 3-5 days.
  • Cooking wine: 1-2 months

And if you’re saving a special bottle of wine, make sure to store it in a cool, dark place.

How to pair wine with food

How do I pair wine with food?

Google this question, and you’ll get thousands of pages of answers… It can be overwhelming! With each Club W wine, you’ll also receive a recommended recipe to pair it with. The recipe cards have taught us so much, so here are a few basic tips we’ve learned:

  • Hors d’oeuvres = dry rosé. Rosé is one of the most versatile wines in the game, so it’s great if you need to pair a combination of flavors. Serving a fruit, cheese, and charcuterie plate? A rosé will perfectly balance those fruity, salty, and creamy flavors.
  • Fish or a light pasta = white wine. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc is a great wine to serve with any dish that involves a squeeze or zest of lemon.
  • Rich meats = full-bodied red. There’s a reason why people drink red wine with steak: the two just pair well together.
  • Desserts: Your wine should always be as sweet if not sweeter than your food. If your dessert is extra-rich, choose bubbles!
