Meeting the parents can be tricky...we're here to help!

For me, the holiday season is all about spending time with family. Since my husband and I have spent two married Christmases together, we have grown comfortable around each other’s families. While I am grateful for the relationship that I have with his parents now, in hindsight I remember being so nervous to meet them for the very first time. This time of year many relationships are taken to the next level – the holiday season is when most couples finally get to meet their significant other’s parents.

While these tips may be geared toward the holiday season, this list is useful year round, should you find yourself in a similar situation. So, here are a few helpful tips that I’ve learned when it comes to dressing to meet the parents…

What’s The Occasion?

Will you be attending a black tie affair or casual family get together? It’s always best to find out where you’re going and what you’ll be doing before you start to plan your ensemble. During this time of year it’s common for holiday parties to be a bit dressier than the average outing. I personally prefer to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when you’re unsure of the dress code.

Keep It Comfortable

There’s nothing worse than tugging at your clothes or stumbling over too high of heels all night. Since you generally don’t want to cause a scandal during your first parental encounter, I recommend keeping your hemline around knee length like this skirt from Paper Crown. Trust me when I say that choosing timeless over trendy is always appreciated in a family setting. It’s best to skip the plunging neckline and stilettos too!

Less Is More

In the beauty department that is! There is a time and a place for a bold smoky eye and a family gathering is usually not one of them. When in doubt, a minimal look is always best. You can’t go wrong with Lauren’s signature winged eyeliner paired with a classic red lip or nude gloss. As for your hair, skip the second day hair and tame those tresses.

Be Yourself

The best piece of advice that I can give to you before you meet the parents is to just be yourself. Add pieces of your personality into your outfit – that locket you’ve worn since you were a little girl could turn out to be a great conversation starter! Choose a dress in a color that you love or even paint your nails your favorite shade of pink. You can tone down your everyday wardrobe for the sake of meeting the parents but you don’t have to water down your personality.

Remember: try not to freak out too much– chances are if your significant other loves you, their parents will too!
