It’s been a while since we’ve done our last book club, and I’ve missed reading along with you guys! I recently became inspired by a very powerful and moving story, and it sparked the idea to start things back up again over here in the Read section of the site. This book club is coming just in time for fall weather, cozy pajamas and cuddling up by the fire with a good read…
Everyone who follows along with this season’s book club will be reading a story that’s very near and dear to my heart. Ready for it? Drumroll please…
We will be reading I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. Some of you might already know a little bit about Malala’s story, but even if you do, I know you’ll be moved by this book. Here’s what to expect…
When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.
On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.
Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.
This story is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.
Malala’s story has truly inspired me to make a change in this world. When you start reading along, you will see what I mean. And while I’ve watched the documentary He Named Me Malala and have done my fair share of research into Malala’s story and cause, I myself have not yet read this book. So, we will be going through each chapter together. I cannot wait to dive in.
I hope you all join me in reading I Am Malala this month.
Are you going to read along?
If yes, RSVP below and read to the end of Chapter 18.
On Wednesday, October 28th, we will be having our first check-in where I will ask you questions related to the first half of the book. If you’ve participated in Book Club before, you know how enjoyable these book discussions are. I will also announce the date of my live book chat on October 30th, so start reading and get excited!
