Sadly, summer has come to an end. But that doesn’t mean the fun has to! These past couple of months we’ve been extra inspired to throw fun dinner parties and get-togethers. We were due for another one, and we recently decided that a happy hour with wine and small bites would be the perfect way to close out the summer and get back into work mode. However, when the topic of which wine and food to serve came up, we all went blank.
Then it hit us, all of us on Team LC now have Club W subscriptions, and each time a monthly box of wines is delivered to our doorstep, we love reading the flashcards that come along with each wine. What felt like such a hard task now all of a sudden made party planning easy and effortless, thanks to Club W. So one weekend we got together and taste-tested the wines from our boxes, picked our favorite bottles and set out to create the recommended recipes. Creating our menu was as easy as that, and the result was a fabulous Sunday evening outdoors filled with delicious, home-cooked dishes and a glass (or two!) of the wines we liked best.
Today, we’re going to show you what bites we created to go along with our favorite wines: Ilana’s citrusy “Pacificana” sauvignon blanc, Allison’s sweet yet crisp “Sauvetage” rose and Rachel’s fruity and floral “Cocomero” rosato. Without further ado, here are the three easy recipes that Club W recommended we pair with these end of the summer wines.
Kale Caesar Salad with Sauvignon Blanc
Ilana’s Wine: 2013 Pacificana Sauvignon Blanc
Ilana’s Recipe: Kale Caesar Salad
“I’m not the kind of person who walks into the wine aisle in the grocery store and automatically knows what bottle to pick just looking at the year and label. This has always made it hard to actually find new wines that I like, which is why I subscribed to Club W. I try every wine in my box each month, and this month I was particularly drawn to the vanilla-apple-toasty flavor of the Pacificana Sauvignon Blanc. I love drinking white wine, so this one had my name all over it.”
“I’ve been a vegetarian for years, but always found it difficult to find yummy recipes to pair with wine. When I saw that the recipe that was recommended to go with this sauv blanc was a kale Caesar salad, I knew it would be the perfect dish to create based on my personality and tastes.”
“I served my salads in small bowls, but you can easily serve a large bowl of this salad at your next large dinner party. The hard-boiled egg gave each serving a good portion of protein, and I garnished it with salt and pepper. It was delicious!”
Shrimp Lobster Rolls with Summer Rosé
Allison’s Wine: 2014 Sauvetage Rosé
Allison’s Recipe: Shrimp Lobster Rolls
“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge fan of drinking rosé in the summertime (let’s be honest, who isn’t?). And each summer, I spend a week in the Hamptons, where lobster rolls are the main event at every gourmet roadside restaurant. So when I tasted the wines in my August box, I loved the fruity hints of strawberry and melon in this particular rosé. And, I loved that I could pair it with one of my favorite dishes even more.”
“The Club W recipe card says that you can make these mini sandwiches with either shrimp or lobster, but since I’d never had a “shrimp lobster roll” before, I decided to go the shrimp route. They were surprisingly easy to make and they tasted delicious. I garnished each sandwich with chopped chives and served them on a platter surrounded by kettle chips, a nod to East Coast faire and the perfect complement to the seafood flavors.”
Drunken Watermelon Popsicles with Fruity Rosato
Rachel’s Wine: 2014 Cocomero Rosato
Rachel’s Recipe: Drunken Watermelon Popsicles
“While I don’t cook a ton, learning new recipes and trying out new dishes has been one of my goals this year. But since I’m still easing into the world of cooking, I love recipes that require only a few ingredients, yet taste great. I also have a bit of a sweet tooth, and like healthy finding ways to satisfy it. So, when I saw the recipe for drunken watermelon popsicles, I knew it was a match made in heaven. A dessert I can make without baking, mixing and whipping is always a winner in my book.”
“I’m also not a huge wine expert, but I have picky tastebuds. So, when I taste a wine I like, I tend to stick with it. The rosato that came in my Club W August box was light and flowery. And can we talk about how cute that watermelon label is? I’m such a sucker for fun wine labels.”
We think it goes without saying that our happy hour was a success! Club W’s wine subscription service made it easy for us to have sophisticated wines sent to our doorstep and ready to serve to our guests at happy hour. Plus, the recipe cards were the perfect way for us to learn a bit about what exactly we were serving (the flavors, scent and origin of each wine), as well as what recipe would taste best with that wine.
Entertaining has never been more fun for us or more effortless! The only thing left to do is decide what we will plan for next month’s Club W shipment.
