It’s hard to believe that summer is already over. However, there’s no need to get those end-of-summer blues, because now we get to enjoy our 2nd favorite season: fall! Pumpkin spice lattes will be available at every coffee shop, the leaves start to turn colors, and we can officially start planning our Halloween costumes. On second thought, fall might be our 1st favorite season! Either way, we’re excited for all things autumn, and we hope you are too.
So to kick off the brand new season, we thought it would be fun to put together a fall bucket list. We did a bit of brainstorming and came up with 10 things that we want to try during these next few months. It was actually pretty hard to narrow down the list to just 10 items. There are so many special things about autumn! Without further ado, here are 10 things that we want to try this fall… we hope you’ll try them, too!
1. Host a Friendsgiving.
Every year before Thanksgiving, our editor-in-chief Lauren hosts her very own friendsgiving (basically a pre-thanksgiving dinner with your best friends). It’s a great way to get together with your besties before everyone jets off to their hometown. We absolutely love this idea. Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, and wonderful friends (who are like family) are one of the things that we are most grateful for. So this year, why not host one for yourself? Choose a location, put together a guest list, and have each of your friends bring their favorite Thanksgiving dish. It’s guaranteed to be a good time, trust us!
2. Make Your Own Apple Pie
There’s nothing quite like the smell of a fresh, homemade apple pie baking in the oven during the fall months. So this fall, we want you to make one for yourself! Even if baking isn’t exactly your forte, we know that you can do it. Just follow Lauren’s tried and true recipe, and you’ll end up with a pretty delicious finished product. And if you want to get a little bit fancy, you can even try your hand at Lauren’s apple tarts.
3. Go To A Haunted House
Fall also happens to be the spookiest time of year, thanks to Halloween. So indulge in your scary side and head to a haunted house with a group of friends. For those of you who get a little bit too spooked, you can substitute this one with watching a scary, Halloween-themed movie (we recommend Hocus Pocus). It will get you into the spirit of fall and will make you even more excited for Halloween to roll around!
4. DIY Your Halloween Costume
Do you remember last year when Lauren held a contest to decide her Halloween costume? Well, this year we’re challenging you to do the same! Decide what you want to be (cruising Pinterest is a great way to find inspo) and start crafting! And make sure to enter into our annual DIY Halloween costume contest. You just might see your very own costume tutorial right here on the blog!
5. Try A New Scent
The aromas of autumn are some of our favorites (think pumpkin spice, cinnamon and crisp apple), so why not update your own scent at the same time? This is the perfect time to try a new perfume, or even a scented candle. The Little Market has a ton of delicious autumn-inspired candles, which happen to be our favorites. In fact, their apple candle is burning in our office as we speak…
6. Volunteer Your Time
Have a few spare hours? Why not donate that time to those in need. Whether that means donating old clothing, giving out blessing bags, volunteering for your local animal rescue, or cooking a meal at a women’s shelter, you can’t go wrong. It will mean so much to those that you’re helping, and will make you feel pretty good. And, volunteering is a great way to meet likeminded people, too. To get started, check out our list of ways to help HERE.
7. Clean Out Your Closet
Before the winter holidays roll around, it’s always a good idea to do a big closet cleanout. If you take care of this daunting task during the fall, you’ll definitely thank yourself when winter arrives. It’s nice to start each season with a little extra room for new purchases as well as a clean, neat, organized wardrobe. Also, you can donate your old clothes to those in need, which will mark off #6 of our bucket list, too!
8. Surprise Someone
It’s the little things that count. So this fall, why not surprise someone in your life and brighten up their day. This can be anything… sending flowers for no reason, putting a sweet, handwritten note in the mail, or surprising them with a sentimental gift. It will make someone else’s fall a little bit better, and that’s always a good thing.
9. Go Pumpkin Picking
Pumpkins are the quintessential fall food. We love decorating our homes with pumpkins when it gets close to Halloween… and decorating those pumpkins is a lot of fun too! So this year, go pick your own. Head out to a pumpkin patch with friends and family and hand pick which gourds you’ll be carving this year. Not only is it nice to know that you chose the pumpkins that will be going into your homemade pie, but it’s also such a fun fall-time activity that only rolls around once a year. Want to earn extra credit? Host a pumpkin carving party, too.
10. Get Some Quality Family Time In
Even though we try to do this as often as we can already, during the fall we’re going to make an extra effort to spend as much time with our families as possible. When life is busy, it can be hard to make time for the ones you love the most. So this autumn, schedule that extra trip home to see your folks. Go visit your sister at college. Get your cousins together for a mini-reunion. It’s always nice to spend time with people who’ve known you your whole life, and who love you unconditionally.
And there you have it! We are pretty excited to get working on all of these things… starting now.
