In today’s working world, lots of us ladies spend more time at the office than we do at home… or anywhere else, for that matter. Which is why your desk is such an important space. Lucky for us, there is so much adorable (and functional) desk décor out there.
But it’s not just what’s on your desk that matters. Since we spend so much time at work, it’s important to be prepared for anything. Which is why I’ve rounded up the 10 items that every women should keep in her desk or office emergency kit. Because you never know when you’ll have a last minute after-work date, or when your trusty iPhone needs a little extra charge. And if you have a friend who just landed a new job, it can be a nice little gift to put together her office emergency kit for her. Take a look…
1. Cell-Phone Charger
There’s nothing worse than having your phone die in the middle of the workday. Whether you’re using it to make after-work plans with friends or for work-related tasks like email or scheduling, these days your mobile phone is a crucial part of your 9-5. I recommend keeping a USB cord plugged into your computer so that you can charge while you work. You can also pick up a back-up charger just in case. I love this one from Ban.do. Cute and functional!
2. Flip-Flops or Flats
Trust me on this one. Keep a pair of flip-flops or flats in your desk or office in case of emergency (or just if your feet are killing you from a long day in high heels). I have a pair of my LC Lauren Conrad flip flops at my Paper Crown office (I also keep a pair in my car), and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thrown them on at the end of the day to make the walk to my car a little less painful.
3. Stain Remover
Accidentally spill some of your morning coffee on your crisp white blouse? Not a problem. Just keep a stain remover (like a Tide stick) in your desk drawer and no one will ever know!
4. Feminine Products
We’ve all been there. And depending on your relationship and office culture, it can be a little uncomfortable asking a coworker for a tampon. It’s a personal matter, so it’s best to be prepared.
5. Gum or Breath Mints
No one wants to talk business while smelling your coffee breath! Keep some gum or mints nearby, so that you can have fresh breath all day long (no matter what you eat or drink).
6. Hand Sanitizer
When one person in an office gets sick, it can be hard to avoid catching the bug. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer tucked in your desk drawer. It’s your best defense against the flu that’s bound to spread around your workplace every once in a while.
7. Reusable Water Bottle
Don’t forget to hydrate, ladies! Sipping on water all day long is not only good for you but it will help you from feeling sluggish. Keep a refillable water bottle like these cute ones from BKR, so that you don’t have to buy a bottle each time you are feeling thirsty. It’s easier on your wallet and much better for the environment.
8. Hair Ties
You never know when you’re going to want to throw your hair up in the middle of the day. I keep a pack of Twistbands in my desk, so I can go from beachy waves to a ballerina bun in a snap.
9. Lip Balm and Mascara
If you’re heading to happy hour after work or going to an event, it’s best to keep some beauty reinforcements on hand. Just a swipe of mascara and a hint of lipgloss, and you’re ready to go!
When your mid-afternoon cravings hit, keep some nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, or oatmeal packets in your desk. They’re great for when you need a healthy pick-me-up and don’t want to be tempted to buy something out of the vending machine.
