Picture this: you’ve just left the hair salon with freshly colored strands and you feel as magical as a unicorn and as pretty as a daisy. You’re so thrilled with your locks that you even snap a selfie or two for posterity…

Here at LC.com we’ve experienced this just-hit-the-salon euphoria plenty of times. Simply put, there are few things that make a girl feel as stellar as freshly colored hair. Unfortunately, the bliss doesn’t always last. A myriad of factors can suck the hue right out of your hair, leaving you with dull, sad strands. In an effort to help you keep that euphoria alive as long as possible, here are five ways to keep your color from fading:

Use the Right Shampoo

The first step to long lasting color is using a color protecting shampoo like John Frieda Everlasting Blonde Color Preserving Shampoo or their Brilliant Brunette Color Protecting Moisture Shampoo. Depending on your hue, you may also want to talk to your stylist about toning shampoos. They’re most commonly used by blondes, but all hair colors can benefit from a toning shampoo used once or twice a week. Since they actually alter the tone of your color, be sure to check with a pro before applying! Also, stay away from clarifying shampoos, which will strip the color from your strands.

Dried out hair loses color more quickly, so it’s important to keep your hair healthy and hydrated. Limit your heat styling as much as possible, and use a deep conditioning mask—like Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment or Drybar Mudslide Nourishing Hair Mask—once a week to keep your strands silky.

Limit Sun Exposure

The sun’s rays will bleach your hair—and subsequently fade that pretty color of yours—so be sure to stay protected when you spend time in direct sunlight. Cover up with a hat or try a color protecting spray like Kerastase Soleil Huile Celeste Shimmering Protective Care Spray.

Avoid Hot Water

A steaming hot shower definitely feels amazing, but unfortunately it will also cause your color to fade. Instead, stick to lukewarm temps while washing your hair. If you’re still craving the heat, try a nice hot bath instead!

Get Glossy

If you want to go the extra mile to protect your color, consider a professional gloss. Glosses are mainly for shine, but they also add tone and depth to your hair—and protect it from environmental damage that can cause fading!
