Tuesday Ten: October Style Tips

October is here, and with it comes the transition to cozy fall fashion. Since the weather is usually crisp—but not too chilly—I like to focus on layering lighter pieces like sweaters, scarves, and denim jackets. Layering is great because it allows you to explore texture and pattern combinations, and create fresh looks with your wardrobe stapes. If you’re craving a little fall fashion styling inspiration, here are 10 great ideas to get you started…

1. Call it a hat trick.
I love busting out the hats every fall because they make even the simplest ensembles look chic. Choose a dark, wide brimmed option to keep yours looking modern (and just a little bit witchy).

2. Double your denim.
Freshen up the traditional double denim look by mixing textures, and pairing your jean with a pastel overcoat, like this baby blue number.

3. Break out your burgundy.
Burgundy is having a big moment this fall. Embrace the trend with a monochromatic ensemble, like this cool look.

4. Fall for soft neutrals.
Soft neutral hues—like blush, gray, and tan—are definitely trending this season. Wear yours with bold sunglasses and white separates for a sophisticated look.

5. Super-size it.
Oversized, cozy sweaters are always one of the best parts of fall. Style yours with distressed denim for an edgier take, or over a summer dress for a nice mix of textures.

6. Sport a varsity jacket.
I mentioned this in last month’s style tips, but collegiate jackets are a great way to add a sporty touch to your look. They’re a good weight for October—warm but not too heavy—and they pair beautifully with streamlined bottoms like skinny jeans or pencil skirts.

7. Grin and bare it.
Pairing your winter coat with bare legs is a great way to dress for crisp October temperatures. Take a cue from this ensemble, and pair your coat with a chic hat and edgy booties.

8. Rock rusty 70’s hues.
The 1970’s offer endless style inspiration. This season, the decade’s retro hues are making a comeback. Reach for pieces in mustard, burnt orange or rust (like this adorable rust-hued skirt) to try the look.

9. Get thigh high.
Thigh-high boots can add some major sass to an outfit, and they’re also a great way to keep your legs warm! Pair yours with a slouchy sweater to balance out your look.

10. Pack a punch with pastels.
Pastels for fall are a bit unexpected, but completely chic. The simplest way to rock the trend is to pick up a coat in your favorite pastel hue. Choose an unstructured piece to keep the look modern.
