Last February, Team LC hit the streets of New York to take in the up-and-coming runway trends for fall 2014 at fashion week. At the time, spring hadn’t begun yet, and summer wasn’t even a thought in our minds yet. So, fall fashion seemed like a very distant idea. Now, six months later, fall is on the horizon, and those trends we saw on the catwalk are more applicable than ever. While many Fall 2014 collections we saw showed trends that were a little out of our comfort zone, today we’ve come up with a few ways to wear those runway looks in the real world. Consider this a fall fashion guide that allows you to take your favorite trends from the catwalk to the sidewalks. Without further ado, here is our fall trend guide…
Faux Fur for Days.
Fur is always on-trend for winter and fall, but the runways proved that this season it’s a must-have texture. Hey, if it’s good enough for Fendi and Tom Ford, it’s good enough for us. Go the faux fur route with a coat, vest or stole like this one from Topshop.
Real Way: Faux Fox Fur Long Stole, $56
Fun 60s styles graced the runways of Miu Miu, Valentino, and Gucci alike. This fall, grab your over-the-knee boots and a cool shift dress to channel the swinging styles of that decade.
Runway: Miu Miu
Who doesn’t love to bundle up in a knitted sweater when fall weather hits? Make like Stella McCartney and grab a speckled sweater like the Free People one below.
Runway: Stella McCartney
Kenneth Cole, Tibi, and Cushnie et Ochs (to name a few) all debuted a new take on last season’s floppy fall hat: The western hat. On the runway, the western feel of these hats was exaggerated for a high-fashion feel. So to take this look to the streets, opt for a subtler nod to the wild, wild West with a rancher style hat.
Real Way: Urban Outfitters Dallas Felt Hat, $69
Out with chain strap and oversized clutches and in with the hardshell variety! Hard, box clutches are all the rage for evening looks. Take a hint from Louis Vuitton and go for a small, square purse.
Runway: Louis Vuitton
Real Way: Natasha Couture Marble Box Clutch, $128
Top Heavy Sunnies.
Where the classic clubmaster style sunglasses left off, the fall 2014 runway trends picked up. Find a pair of sunnies that is framed on the top, and rounded on the bottom. You’ll be the belle of the sartorial ball.
Runway: Rag & Bone
Real Way: Leather-Wrap Round Sunglasses, $20
Chanel, Edun and DKNY were all designers who showed comfortable footwear as an on-trend look for fall (good news for those of us whose feet might need a break from sky-high stilettos). Channel the look in your favorite pair of lace-ups or slip-ons.
Real Way: Vans Classic Slip-On Sneaker, $46.95
To go along with those 60s shift dresses were modern go-go boots and… you guessed it, mod booties. These short Beatles boots were big last fall and they’re here to stay this season, too.
Runway: Peter Som
Real Way: Sam Edleman Petty Booties, $130
Smoking slippers have always been a style staple in my own closet, and lately designers like Dolce & Gabbana have been giving them an edgy upgrade. Opt for a black pair with a tassel detail, and wear them with leather leggings, a blouse and a long cardigan on colder days.
Runway: Dolce & Gabbana
The main trend we saw on for Fall 2014 was the “barely there” makeup look. From Isabel Marant to Stella McCartney, it seemed like “less is more” was the resounding makeup motto. Luckily, this is the easiest possible trend to translate to the real way. Just a swipe of mascara, a bit of blush, and a touch of luscious lip balm (like Sara Happ’s Lip Slip below) does the trick.
Runway: Isabel Marant
Real Way: Sara Happ The Lip Slip Lip Balm, $24
A touch of silver at Donna Karan and a swipe of rose gold at Rodarte was all, it seemed, the models needed for fall. Keep the rest of your face fresh with minimal makeup, then use a metallic liquid liner for night out on the town.
Runway: Donna Karan
Real Way: Giorgio Armani Liquid Eyeliner, $34
Lashes for Days.
In case you haven’t noticed yet, the 60s mod look is huge for fall. Pay homage to Twiggy with lush, dramatic lashes that will draw all attention to your eyes. Apply two coats of YSL’s Volume Effet Faux Cils Baby Doll mascara to get the look.
Which of these runway to real way trends will you try first?
