Tuesday Ten: May Style Tips

I always look forward to sharing my style tips at the beginning of the month, and May is no exception. While March and April were all about transitional dressing, now is the time to really start wearing the summery styles you’ve been dreaming about. (Shorts, sunhats, and sandals, anyone?). Without further ado, here are 10 style tips to try in the month of May…

1. Hang loose.
For a touch of effortless spring glamour, try a maxi dress with a loose and breezy silhouette. (Tip: It’s the perfect silhouette to camouflage a winter waistline as you get back in bikini shape.)

2. Check it out.
A checked button-down shirt is a staple that every girl should have in her spring wardrobe. Especially in blue and white, this print has such a timeless, All-American feel to it.

3. Shade your face with a wide-brimmed hat.
Hats are one of spring’s chicest and most practical accessories. For days spent outdoors, a fedora or any other brimmed topper will keep the sun out of your eyes and your skin shielded from harmful UV rays.

4. Take a style note from the ‘90s.
If you haven’t sported overalls since the ‘90s, it might be time to give this trend another try. It’s true that overalls are a hard look to pull off, but when done right they have such a summery, nostalgic feel to them.

5. Pair a flouncy skirt with a bright sandal.
Pairing a flouncy skirt with a colorful shoe creates a flirty look that is perfect for late spring. Even better, take a note from Sarah of Smitten Studio and choose a skirt in a watercolor floral print.

6. Pick a pastel purse.
Why not update your everyday bag in a fun, springy shade this month? Don’t worry about matching your bag to your outfit too much. This time of year, pastel blues and pinks are just as appropriate as black and tan bags.

7. Become a print mixing maven.
When you’re wearing less fabric and lighter layers, mixing prints is a little less intimidating than it can be in the winter. Take a note from the bloggers behind They All Hate Us… Leopard and stripes have never looked so good together.

8. Spend your weekend in red, white and blue.
With Memorial Day weekend coming at the end of the month, it’s the perfect time to put together an ensemble inspired by Old Glory. Spend the long weekend in shades of red, white, and blue for a dose of patriotic-meets-nautical prep.

9. Wear your white jeans with a military jacket.
If it’s still a little bit cool where you live, consider pairing white denim with a military jacket. This transitional look feels super summery, but provides enough warmth for chilly spring days. For the perfect finishing touch, accent your ensemble with a brown belt or satchel.

10. Show off your legs in scalloped shorts.
It’s no secret that I have an obsession with scallops. Scalloped edges add a touch of dainty sweetness to almost any piece. Wearing a pair of shorts with scalloped edges will make even the most casual ensemble seem special and feminine.
