How to tie a Tie and Bow Tie

A few years ago I posted a blog with a tutorial that every girl should learn: how to tie a necktie. Since it’s been a while, I thought I’d give you all a little refresher course. And since bow ties have become a style staple for the dapper man in your life, I put together a tutorial on how to tie a bow tie, too. Here we go…

How To Tie A Tie

Step 1. Place the tie around your neck, underneath your shirt collar, and cross the wide end of the tie over the thinner end.
Step 2. Take the wide end of the tie and fold it underneath the thinner end, pointing the wide end upwards.
Step 3. Fold the wide end over the thin end of the tie one more time, this time with the wide end pointing downward.
Step 4. Take the wide end up and underneath the thinner end of the neck loop and pull up.
Step 5. Pull the bottom of the wide end through the loop at the top and pull down.
Step 6. Adjust until the tie is straight and even.

Easy enough, right? This next one’s a little more complicated…

How To Tie A Bow Tie

Step 1. Place the bow tie around your neck, under your shirt collar, and grab each end. The end of the bow tie of your right should be about 2 inches lower than the left end.
Step 2. Cross the longer end over the shorter end, making sure the ends are crossing each other close to your neck.
Step 3. Pull the longer end up through the loop where both ends cross
Step 4. Hold the longer end above the loop, and take the shorter end and fold it back over itself to the right.
Step 5. Drop the raised end of the bow tie over the folded end.
Step 6. Grab the left and right sides of the folded end and pinch them together in front of the end that you pulled down in step 5. The top of the long end will now be held between them.
Step 7. Feed the middle of the long end back through the knot you made in Step 3. It will now form the back half of the bow. Tighten the bow by pulling on opposite sides and halves at the same time.
Step 8. Adjust the bow tie until both sides are even and it has a snug fit around your neck.

Give these a try and let me know how you do! And make sure to email this link to the man in your life.
