May is a fun month for styling. It’s definitely a time to become reacquainted with your favorite shorts, skirts and dresses. But you don’t have to retire your sweaters and pants quite yet, since the air still feels crisp on certain spring evenings. Today I’m sharing 10 styling tips that will change the way you see items in your closet this spring. From bold brights to patterned maxis, here are a few May styling ideas…
- Pair short shorts with chambray.
Patterned shorts are going to be big this summer—mark my words. Wear yours with a chambray shirt à la blogger Native Fox for a polished twist.
- Update a printed pencil skirt.
Never look at your pencil skirt the same way again. Wear it with a simple tank top, colorful flats and a ladylike handbag. This look is so European chic.
- Bring our your bolds and brights.
Don’t be afraid to start wearing your brightest pieces…that’s what spring and summer are for, after all. Make an even bigger statement by grabbing a friend to go for the bold look with you!
- Pull out your printed maxi.
Floor-skimming skirts and dresses are one of the most effortless pieces to wear in the spring and summer. I love this style with its poppy print and short sleeves. Wear your maxi with a bold clutch and strappy sandals!
- Try a touch of leopard.
Animal prints can sometimes remind me of the fall and winter months. However, when little pops of leopard are incorporated into a spring outfit, the result is refreshing. Find a pair of leopard soles to spice up your sundress this month.
- Go monochromatic.
I mentioned my love of monochromes quite recently (read up on the post here), and I think this trend is one to watch out for this season. I recommend trying to dress in one color that is easy to pull off—like all blue or all white.
- Keep making a statement.
Statement necklaces are not a new trend, but they are still on the forefront of my fashion horizons. Update a plain white top and a swingy spring skirt with a little bit of rock candy.
- Make your workwear warm weather appropriate.
Just because you your office is a bit buttoned up doesn’t mean you have to wear pantsuits and blazers all month long. Pair a conservative skirt with a colorful blouse and keep your hair and makeup simple. I can guarantee your coworkers will be asking for your style secrets. - Dare to be backless.
I’m all about a look that’s business in the front and party in the back. Go for the element of surprise and dare to be backless this month, whether that means wearing a backless top with jeans for a night out, or a backless sundress for weekend adventuring.
- Wrap a denim shirt around your waist.
With a street style photo this cute, do I really need to explain this style tip?! There is no denying that white shorts and a white top look so fresh with a casual touch of chambray.
