Cheer Up: 3 Cures for the Mid-Week Blues

Wednesdays are probably the hardest days of the week. In my opinion, Mondays and Tuesdays represent fresh beginnings and provide motivation for the week to come. Thursdays and Fridays are great because they are the home stretch to the weekend. But somehow, Wednesdays just get lumped right in the middle. I know how hard it can be to stay motivated and positive on these mid-week “hump days.” So, I decided that today I would give you a few tools to lift your spirits when you are in need of a mood boost.

  1. Learn something new. 
    I have always heard that if you are having a bad day, the best way to turn it around is to learn something new. Whether this means sinking your teeth into a really great book, starting a journal of your thoughts, or cooking up a new recipe—trying something new will get your mind off of whatever is eating at you. It’s common sense: If you start doing something else, you won’t focus on your bad day anymore.
  2. Count your blessings. 
    While it might sound a bit cliché, one of the best ways to come to terms with reality when you’re feeling down is counting your blessings. It only takes a minute to pause and reflect on how much we all have to be happy about. If you’re having a down day, try changing your mindset to think about someone less fortunate than yourself. Or, call up a friend who might be going through a major life struggle. Thinking about how lucky you are and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is sure to leave you in a much better mood.
  3. Eat well and exercise. 
    So many foods have mood-boosting properties. According to Woman’s Day, leafy greens like spinach can increase blood flow to your brain and help you recall information (great for one of those sluggish Wednesdays in the office). Also, foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon are known to help calm nerves and minimize anxiety, according to Livestrong. If you really want to cure your mid-week blues, head to the gym. Working out releases endorphins in your brain, which will leave you with a calmer, happier state of mind.
