Fit Tip: Boost Your Metabolism

Boosting your metabolism isn’t as hard as you might think. While all of our bodies are different and metabolize in their own ways, there are a few surefire tricks you can rely on to rev up your inner calorie furnace. From early AM workouts to food choices, you can give your metabolism an extra push without too much effort. Sweet! Here are a few simple ways to get your metabolism pumping in no time:

  1. Eat Breakfast! The worst thing you can do to kick-start your day (and your metabolism) is skip breakfast. Click here for my complete breakfast breakdown.
  2. Get Moving in the Morning. My trainer has always pushed me to do my workouts in the morning. But I’ll be honest. There’s no chance I’ll ever be a morning person, no less someone that can hit the gym before noon. That said, for those of you who are early risers, I encourage you to exercise in the morning. An early morning sweat-session will get your metabolism up and running and therefore burning more calories for the rest of the day. Check out my Fitness section where I’ve shared a few of my favorite exercises and workout routines.
  3. Drink Up! If you’re even just a tad thirsty (or dehydrated) you run the risk of slowing your metabolism. I’ve heard that drinking cold water actually sparks your metabolism because your body has to work harder to heat it up to its natural temperature. If you have the taste for it, drink green tea too. It has a special compound in it that bumps up the metabolic rate as well. (I drink tea almost everyday!)
  4. Have Whole Grains, Not Multigrain. Complex carbs and fiber-rich foods help to speed up your metabolism. Whole grains are good, multigrain are not. If anything, just remember that!
  5. Eat More, Smaller Meals. Didn’t think you’d see the phrase “eat more” on this list did you? According to WebMD, if you divide your meals up into smaller portions so you eat more often throughout the day, your metabolism won’t have a chance to take a break. Now this doesn’t mean stuff your face 24/7. Instead, try to eat smaller bites throughout the day instead of three large meals. Click here to check out my favorite fat-burning snacks that are perfect for this tip!

Now you may be wondering why I love covering health and fitness here on my blog. And to be honest, it’s because these are important things in my personal life. I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing fitness and nutrition experts and I figured what better place to share all of the knowledge I’ve gained than here on my website. If you have a particular question about my health or fitness routine, check out the Fitness section or leave your question in the comments below.

What’s been your greatest health or fitness obstacle?

Thanks for this Lauren! My biggest health obstacle is when I crave the sweets I love. I will do great for maybe a week or two, then I crave those foods we aren’t really suppose to be eating while watching your weight. I sometimes don’t know how to stop myself from buying that doughnut with sprinkles for my breakfast. lol

Hey Lauren, it would be super great if could just make a meal-plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner what you usually eat regulary and what you suggest (also for snacks etc).. thanks!!!!! xoxo

Thanks! This is always a good reminder. Lauren- I think it’d be cool if you did a specific “”Day in the Life”” thing for one day. If you document everything about your “”routine”” on a normal day, from the time you wake up, until bed. What time do you get up on a “”Typical”” day. We understand that many of your days are packed with different things everyday, and that your schedule is not like most of ours- but it’d still be nice to see what time you wake up, what you had for breakfast, what kind of exercise, what your beauty routine was etc. I know it sounds a little “”Stalkerish””, lol. But you have an awesome shape & many of us would love to be able to know what it takes to get & maintain a body that can fit into sample sizes & designer clothes. I know there are lots of blogs about it- but I’m not sure if I remember one that listed everything start to finish.

Thanks Lauren! I always love your health and fitness posts!

By the way, according to my Chemistry textbook, ice water does burn calories! If you drink 12 ounces of water, your body burns 12 calories. If you drink about 8 glasses a day this can add up:)

Thanks for the tips! I had heard that cold water boosts metabolism. I also heard that spicy food does too.

Great tips, Lauren! I love getting my workouts out of the way in the morning. It’s tough to actually get up and out of bed, but once I’m up I’m so happy to be doing it and that I’m done for the day!

I’d have to say that my biggest obstacle is drinking water and watching what I eat, these are great tips though, and the facts help a lot!

  • Lena Ameri

These are great tips! I find that drinking more water helps me to eat less. Since I can get caught up in my day and forget to drink water, I set an hourly alarm on my phone to remind me. Also, every time I am offered water or I pass by water, I make sure to drink it. Finally, I carry around a huge bottle with me everywhere I go. Since it’s heavy, it motivates me to drink it and lighten my load! These tricks help me get in my 8 glasses a day.

  • Devin

I carry a huge bottle with me too! I love water, now if I could just be a morning person!

Did not know about the multi grains

    Thank you Lauren!

I try to abide by all of these tips so hopefully my metabolism is working efficiently (I could do with more water though I think…)

With exercising in the morning… are you supposed to do it before or after breakfast? And if after how long are you supposed to wait?

  • Happy Healthy Girl

Green teas and other herbal teas are best for increasing metabolic rate. I always prefer to choose the foods correctly and ensure that my diet includes rich protein sources, juices, fruits and most importantly vegetables. Juice cleanse also increases the metabolism and helps to loose weight faster.

Biggest fitness obstacle- mono. I was finally getting in such good shape and I had started to see a lot of progress and it was great! For the first time ever I was feeling healthy and energized, but then I got mono and had to spend 3 months recovering and basically sleeping all day. Now I’m even worse than before I started working out again and all of that hard work went down the drain :( I’m still pretty weak and it’s been a real challenge getting into the swing of things again. I feel so discouraged and like I’m trapped in a body that refuses to cooperate! Any tips on how I can start off again? I currently can barely do 10 minutes of moderate exercise without needing a nap.
