Primped: My Tips for Skirt-Ready Legs

With warmer temps in full swing and shorter hemlines on the horizon, here are a few of my personal tips for getting your stems spring and summer ready…
  1. Exfoliate, exfoliate! I recommend Fresh’s Brown Sugar Body Polish or making your own. A great scrub will slough away dead skin cells, leaving your legs polished and primed for increased moisturizer absorption. To make your own, simply mix together olive oil and sea salt with a squeeze of lemon juice until it’s a thick paste.
  2. Moisturize. Twice a day–once in the morning (after you shower) and once at night before bed.
  3. Be mindful. Especially with what you put in your body! Before a big event and during the summer season I aim to really cut down my intake of salt and refined sugars. Staying hydrated is also really important if you want to reduce bloating and water retention.
  4. Lunge, lift and squat. To keep your legs lovely year round, get in the habit of squeezing in a few sets of lunges, leg lifts and squats every day. This will totally pay off come summertime.
  5. Keep it tan. Nothing slims your legs like a great tan! My favorite sunless tanner is by Kate Somerville, but I hear L’Oreal has great options too.

Speaking of sunless tanners, what’s your go-to sunless tanning product?

I do most of these already so I must be doing something right! lol. I’m going to try the exfoliating scrub:) I want to start using sunless tanners because skin cancer scares the crap out of me and you have been telling us how harmful it is to use a tanning bed. So I don’t have a favorite sunless tanner yet! I’m going to give Kate Summerville a try! Thanks Lauren:) xoxo

  • Tiffani Stuart

    Great tips!!

  • Courtney Ruscin

My spring go-to has been Benefit Cosmetics Airbrush Spray Tan offered at most Benefit stores. At $48 it is an affordable, flawless self tanning option that lasts up to 5-10 days! Will definitely turn into a Summer obsession. (and no I don’t work for Benefit :)

  • Kellie Norton

I’ve never tried a sunless tanner! I’ve always been too scared that I’ll look like a blonde version of Snookie! But your sunless tanner seems like it really works so I’m willing to try that :-)

  • Rachel Sanders

I’m jealous of whoever’s legs they are! And great tips! I must find a new tanner!! xx

  • Rachel Trampel

Definitely need to check out this self-tanner… there is nothing I love more than a good tan during the summer, but I have to keep my legs out of the sun this summer (I am trying laser hair removal!) I also am really horrible at remembering to moisturize twice a day… need to do this more often! Thanks for the tips… and yes very jealous of those legs 😉

I use Flawless by Fake Bake…easy to see where you’re spraying it, you can choose how dark you want to go by either using more or less spray and it develops in 6hours, you can use it about once or twice a week as needed to keep that sunkissed look. I don’t know how much it is in the US but in the UK you can buy a bottle for about

  • Danny

I always eat fresh produce during the summer and try to eliminate as much processed food as possible. You’d be surprised at just how much of a difference it makes.

    I like this post!

My spring-summer tips are : exfoliation once a week following by Le Petit Marseillais oil (its flavour is just perfect! Beautiful hydrated skin), I use Niveau goodbye cellulite and Mixa body summer everyday :)

With those products my legs are ready for spring and summer and never forget solar protection too ,)

I am delighted to be a new member in your community. Thank you. Comment that I found a great post and very useful.

  • Sboz

I loved all those tips except one-the need to have tanned skin. I’m pale by choice and my skin is just as beautiful as someone with a darker hue.

  • Nathalia

Great tips. I usually exfoliate my entire body once a week with ground coffee (from breakfast, yay for recycling), because it has the right texture and contains a moisturizing substance and caffeine, which is known for burning fat. Of course, I have to wash it down with showergel afterwards, otherwise it leaves stains.

I love Yves Rocher Spray self tanner, since its a natural looking brown.

  • Julie Gegich

Nivea Sun-Kissed Radiant Skin is a great gradual sunless tanner. I use it everyday and its streak-free, plus doesn’t have that horrible “”sunless tan”” scent!

  • Nini

Scott Barnes Body Bling is the best sunless tanner!!

  • Essie
  • Lauren Conrad

So interesting reading about all the tanners you guys like. I’m inspired to go test out a few :-)

  • fashionsontop

Love all the tips! I think Im going to buy a self tanner soon!:)

  • Lo

Clinique has a really great body lotion tanner called Clinque Self Sun Body Tinted Lotion that I used for prom, it really helped me get a perfect glow! There’s tints for light to medium shades and medium to dark also. They also have a body airbrush spray and face tanner which I’m dyinggggg to buy but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet!

  • Umbrella Drink

I like getting a Mystic spray tan. You are ready for summer in 30 seconds!

  • Shelby Klukken

Victoria’s Secret tanning/bronzing products and PINK Beach bronzing lotion are awesome!

I stay away from non-natural products, so I love Alba Botanicals Very Emollient Tanner. Its creamy in a way I’ve never experienced before using tanners :)

  • Jaclyn Schler

I love Cerave moisturizing lotion! It’s the best for sensitive skin.

I’ve been doing lunges for about 2 months now, every day. I just do it while I’m watching TV or something, and it has really paid off!

I would like some more suggestions for sunless tanners. They all smell funny to me!

Shaving legs leaves my skin really dry & in need for a good moisturizer. Unfortunately almost all bodylotions I tried contain some sort of alcohol which stings like cuh-razy… Until a friend recently told me about pure coconut oil. It’s lovely and leaves my legs beautifully soft :)

The organic virgin one is supposed to be best but I just have a standard pure one from a health store (expensive enough lol) and it’s fantastic. Smells summery tropical too :)

As body scrub I use raw sugar mixed with olive oil… works wonders!

  • Stephanie DiMaggio

great tips!! I always wonder how to make my winter legs ready for summer!

  • Michelle LaPorte

For sunless tanning at home I love the Jergens Natural Glow daily moisturizer. It is great for a natural glow that gradually builds and most importantly lasts! If I am looking to be darker, I go to my salon for a spray tan that will last if you take care of it correctly! I love being tan but also being healthy at the same time so sunless tanning is the way to be!

  • Angela Trowbridge

St. Tropez bronzing mousse is amazing and fool proof! the base color is an olive, not an orange, tone and the results are natural and amazing.

  • Alexandra Lasota

Mine is SObronze. It’s amazing because it doesn’t stain, stays on long, and doesn’t smell, or streak. Love it.

  • mehreen blank

i like the St tropez tanner…but a cheaper option that i also like 9if you can get over the smell is the jergans daily tanning lotion…..

  • Steph Noble

Great post, I have to keep my legs in shape or I really don’t feel good about myself!

  • Anntasha Crotty

My go to sunless tanner is with out a doubt Sun. I think thats what it’s called.

I have been using it for little off a month. It smells great and doesn’t streak or come off while you sleep. That was one of my biggest problems. I also love Katie’s Towelettes as well.

  • Jojo

Great tips! I really need to try out the self-tan for my body. Can’t wait to try it out!

These are great tips! I’m pretty fair skin with a blue undertone. If there are any ladies who are similar skin type and have found a great product (that doesn’t make them orange!) please, please let me know. :)

  • Kymberly Turner

My skin lol since I’m African American, but I do like to lay in the sun a little bit just to get my skin clear and a little glow to it.

  • Saira Kashyap

im indian so i already have brown skin, but i love getting a more natural looking tan! i love this suggestion for more toned legs, i already see a difference!

  • brittany echols

I really love the exfoliating idea, i think i will experiment with sugar instead of salt.

  • Sarah Elizabeth

I have the same problem as Miss Rylee here, but however I have not tried any self tanners. I am not super pale, but I wouldnt want for one day my skin to look darker. I will definatley try to find this Victoria Secret one. Thanks for the great tip(;.

  • Adi Coulter

I don’t like tanning as much I used to, due to the fact that i believe that fair skin is very pretty but I also had the Victoria Secret stuff and it worked wonders.

  • Monica_in_Heels

    Great tips!!! :)

  • Kathe Cast

    Well, since i

  • kjandersen11

At the moment I use St. Tropez :) Like that the color looks natural. xoxo KJ

  • Samantha Catapano

I love love loveee the Victoira’s Secret self tanning line, the spray tan as well as the tanning lotion are amazing!!! It comes out looking really natural, and not orange at all!!!!

  • B

An amazing thing I do is I mix a foundation that matches my skin colour (just a drop or two) with a few squirts of lotion and rub them together in my hands to use as leg moisturizer. It’s amazing for covering blemishes without wearing stockings, especially when it’s hot out!
