Tuesday Ten: My Secrets to Smooth Skin

Word to the wise: wrinkles are inevitable (sorry ladies, I only speak the truth). Whether we like it or not, they are a part of life. Needless to say, there are many simple tricks you can work into your everyday routine to keep them at bay.

Here are my top ten tips for not looking like this:

  1. Don’t be a straw dog. Try not to use straws (and definitely do not smoke). Pursing your lips constantly will cause micro lines to become serious crevices. No thank you.
  2. Sleep smart. Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to sleep (in terms of positioning at least). The wrong way: sleeping on your face or side. The right way: sleeping on your back (even the American Academy of Dermatology recommends this).
  3. Slather the SPF. No surprises here: SPF is a must if you want smooth, youthful looking skin. While a tan might look good now, don’t forget who you will look like later…this! (Click here to learn about what ingredients I recommend looking for when buying sunscreen.)
  4. Moisturize. Prevent cracks and keep your skin soft and supple by moisturizing your face (and body) twice a day.
  5. Sleep clean. Always, always wash your face before bed. I cannot stress this enough. Never, ever sleep with makeup on.
  6. Wear your sunnies! Not only are sunglasses a great style staple, they also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from harsh UV rays. Just make sure you buy sunnies that are polarized to ensure maximum protection. And the bigger, the better! (I definitely just gave you a wonderful excuse to go buy a new pair of sunglasses. So use it! Click here to check out my favorite sunnies.)
  7. Take your vitamins. Take a multi-vitamin every day and make sure you’re getting enough omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.
  8. Eat right. You are what you eat so be sure to make your diet vibrant and full of color. Do this by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday. This will keep your skin firm, hydrated and happy.
  9. Drink up. You’re only 8 glasses away from happy skin…don’t forget your h2-ohhhs.
  10. Smile! While science has yet to prove the direct link between wrinkles and stress, based on my experience the evidence is pretty clear. Stress manifests itself externally (and from what I’ve seen, wrinkles are a common symptom). Take a deep breath, exhale and smile!

That said, if you already have wrinkles–wear them proudly! I have little smile wrinkles. Most women my age would freak out, but to be honest, I kind of like them. As Lauren Hutton once said, “We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life.” Couldn’t have said it better myself…but it can’t hurt to make those “medals” a little less obvious before you join the half-century club. Right?

Is there an old beauty wives’ tale you’d like demystified? Let me know in the comments below.

Love these tips! I will have to try to sleep on my back more… I love sleeping on my side :( And I am all about preventing the wrinkles… SPF and ways to de-stress are key! And I already have crows feet when I smile big. My boyfriend makes fun of me for freaking out about them. Then again, I figure I’m smiling so hopefully people notice that and not the wrinkles πŸ˜‰

  • karly goins

I love my vitamins, lemon water, fruits & veg, sleep, SPF, slathering my body with lotion, and wearing my sunnies…if only I could stop stressing :( college kinda does that to you though, Lauren what are some things you do to help you relax?

I’ve tried to learn to sleep on my back for the longest time but sadly years of bad habbits makes it really uncomfortable. I’ve basically realized that for me, my best bet to stop sleeping on my back is when I become pregnant and sleeping on my stomach becomes impossible! Haha.

Great tips! Sunscreen, a healthy diet, and lots of water are simple and so important. I have a really expressive face and maleable skin, which leads to wrinkles. When I first noticed my smile and forehead lines, I definitely freaked out. Now, I’m proud to be a happy, expressive person with the face to prove it! We wear our life on our skin, so we might as well have a great life to show off πŸ˜‰

hmm, all my text did not show?! Anyways, I don’t agree with you about sleeping on your back. Best is child postition (everyone who does yoga knows this postition) ! Also do not lotion your body everyday, it starts to grave even more and itchying get wrose. It’s like don’t wash your hair everday either!

  • Liz C

Wise words:) Thanks a lot for these tips!

I think, one of the most popular and confirmed beauty tale is that anti-aging products and stuff like that really help…thats bullsh*t.

In my opinion the affect of your psyche on your skin shouldn’t be underrated AND of course a healthy way of life is the alpha & omega:) So I totally agree with that and try every day to live under these rules, even though often it’s not that easy:)

  • Beth P

Such a fab post! And great tips, I had no idea about straws or sleeping on my side, thank you thank you!

unless you are pregnant, and have-to lay on your side :) Since I’ve had my son I’ve noticed I can’t sleep on my back anymore, habit I guess. Maybe that’s why I see some fine lines showing up around my eyes. :)

Swishing coconut oil for 20minutes each night gets rid of toxins in the mouth, gets rid of morning breath, bacteria, whitens teeth, and is RUMORED (may not be true) to heal minor cuts in the mouth and gums. Is this a Wives Tale, or does this hold some TRUTH?
