Operation Organize: Put Your Closet in Check

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to organize my closet once a month. It’s the only way I can keep my closet in check. Otherwise things get out of hand…or lost. Below I’ve put together a few of my best tips for getting your closet in order to kick off your spring cleaning:

Once a Month: Organize! By the end of the month the contents of my closet and dressers look like a bomb went off. It’s not that I’m intentionally messy; I just forget to fold things when I’m in a rush. Plus I don’t always put things back in their proper place. Needles to say, when I organize my closet once a month I find that my closet is easier to navigate. I put together better outfits because I can find (and see) everything too. I like to organize the hanging pieces by cut, color and length. As for my folded items, I group things together based on cut.

Every 6 Months: I suggest going through your entire closet every 6 months or so. Try everything on. If something is permanently stained or ripped, trash it. If you are unsure about something, ask for a second opinion. That’s what friends are for! Just channel your inner Bradshaw:

Once a Year: It’s time to break up with the old and make room for the new. Donate things or organize a clothing swap with friends. I realize that breaking up with pieces you’ve had in your closet for years can be tough. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that sentimentality should not warrant a precious piece of real estate in your closet. Another idea is to do the “switcheroo.” At the begining of the year, turn all of your hangers backward (like this). As you wear items, turn the hanger back around so it’s facing the right way. By the end of the year you will see which pieces you wore and what you can get rid of. Easy!

Do you have any space saving tips for your closet? If so, share your suggestions in the comments below!

I just wrote a post on prepping your clost for spring on my blog last week! It’s definitely best to get rid of things you don’t wear frequently!

    prep your closet for spring!

  • Melissa Panici

This is such a good post! I’m going to organize my closet this way from now on. Thanks Lauren!

  • Amanda Ebersole

First off, I love that picture of you Lauren. I don’t know how manage to make a spring cleaning picture so lovely! haha Second, I love these ideas! Especially about turning the hangers around, that’s such a good idea to keep tabs on things! Thanks for all the ideas, so helpful!!

  • Erin Tehan

I definitely try to do closet organization each month! And the bonus of donating your stuff is that you can use your Goodwill receipts for tax write-offs, which is just an extra bonus. My accountant husband makes us fully go through our house for donations every December!

  • Jennifer Woodring

I have a hard time parting with clothes, because I always think that I may wear it again. It rarely ends up that way, but there’s that “”what if I need that outfit?”” feeling.

  • Tiffani Stuart

I love this! I need to edit my closet, asap! The only flaw I find w/the hanger trick, is that I think I’d have the compulsion to wear all the “”unworn”” pieces, as soon as I start realizing they’re backwards, lol. That kind of defeats the purpose. (ha ha ha!) Love your ideas, though! and LOVE the Carrie Bradshaw clip. It’s one of my favorites!

  • Susanna Hall

Great tips Lauren! My closet is in some serious need of organization! One tip I have is to get some of those genie hangers, especially if you have a lot of clothes and a small closet. You can get them in packs of two at the dollar store and they are great! Now I just need to find the motivation to get my closet organized then I hope to keep up with Lauren’s once a month plan.

  • Michelle LaPorte

Ever since I read “”Style””, I have been organizing and reorganizing my closet. These are great tips and I am the same way, everything gets lost and out of its place!

    XO Michelle

  • Shannon Dorris

My closet is pretty organized but I really need some help with my jewelry. It’s a total mess! I hope you will check out my post today on my spring inspirations. You are my spring fashion muse! Love your style and your blog.

  • Meredith Chapman

Love the idea of turning hangers backwards. Living in NYC I have limited space and hang 2-3 shirts/dresses per hanger! Haha! Another tip for organizing drawers is to turn everything you’re folding into a square. If you’re folding a tank top for instance lay it down flat on a bed and first take the straps from the top and fold them in towards the center of the shirt then fold in half length wise then in half again width wise. You end up with a perfect little square that stacks nicely in a drawer. Another tip is to roll up jeans rather than fold them in a drawer to take up less space.

  • Stephanie DiMaggio

I organize my closet all the time. My biggest tip it color coordinating your shirts and size coordinate them too! Really helps when your late and looking for a “”red”” shirt, all you do it go straight to the red section!

  • Karen Silva

Lauren, you are amazing. Thanks for inspires me. I try to organize my closet every month but sometimes it is imposible hehe.

  • Kylee Kozisek

I wish there was an easy way to do a clothing swap with all of these girls on your page!! I have a feeling most of the girls on here have great style.

  • Christine Rosko

I just did a huge closet cleanse last week and started shopping this weekend. I love that SATC scene too. So funny, I love how it brings back so many memories from the show. Please check out my spring fashion post when you get a chance! It has a ton of the things that I bought this weekend:

  • Elizabeth LaBrasca

Thanks for all the tips! Perfect timing since I started re-organizing this week and have a lonnnnnnng way to go =)

    xo Elizabeth

  • Lauren Hoffman

I spent this past weekend moving, needless to say right now my closet is more organized than Tory Burch’s show room. I highly recommend the use of Space Bags to store away bulky, winter sweaters and under the bed roll away tupperware for shoes. I also have a bunch of baskets on my closet shelves for bathing suits, lingere, and other misc things I can’t find a home for. I went from having 2 closets to now just having one, what a stress fest! But organizing (and staying organized) really helps.
    Fave Floral accessories!

  • Sam Shilling

i love the hanger idea! that’s so smart when it comes to deciding which pieces you don’t need anymore.

i usually go through my closet when i do some heavy duty shopping. i get rid of some items to make room for more.

  • Rachel Trampel

I wish I kept up with closet organizing each month… one of my New Year’s resolution was just to go through EVERYTHING. I had a hard time parting with clothes that I’d wear to class in college, but now that I’m a couple years out I think it is time to say good-bye because I just can’t wear them to the office. I now HAVE to reorganize my closet because when I was putting away laundry last week, the whole organizer that my clothes are hung up on ripped off the wall. It is quite a disaster… !!!!!

  • Xuan-An Nguyen

Love the switcheroo idea! I’ll have to try that one! I try to clean my closet and donate what I don’t wear every few months, this will definitely help me pick out what I don’t wear more easily.

  • Sandra Veisa

MMM, ty for lovely memories..i love “” Sex and the City”” ..so regarding my closet- im reday for Spring!!!

  • soupforthegirlysoul

great tips! :) I love the SATC video too :)

  • kemi subulade

What I like to do is separate my cloths by seasons.
After each season fold up all your cloths that would not work for the next season.(like after winter I pack up all my heavy coats and niten scarfs ex…. And put them in my dressers so I can have space for spring wear)
by doing this you will have more open space and makes ever more organized.

  • Brenna Gray

I also organize by the season. I store things in rubbermaid boxes when it’s not the in season then switch around when the seasons change. The other clothes get hung up in my closet. I just started donating my clothes to a consignment store. It’s a great way to earn extra cash. They give me 50% of whatthe item sells for :-) I’m having trouble storing coats though. I love coats and have a lot of them, but they take up half the hanging room in my closet. Ugh… any suggestions?

  • Shellz
  • Petra Zeller

Great tips. Thank you Lauren <3 Because of that reason that my closet is too small for all my clothe I make a change every season spring/summer and fall/winter. I have a lot of pullover and big jackets for the winter. Warm clothes needs a lot of space. I have another closet in my washroom
who is in the underground level. So I can save a lot of space in my closet.
The spring is now here and I think I made that change this weekend.
    xoxo, Petra

  • Claire Corbett

i LOVE that switcheroo idea… brilliant. I was just thinking how my closet has gotten out of control. This will definitely help. Thanks Lauren!

  • May Zayan

Super useful tips – especially the hanger turnaround! And your timing couldn’t be more perfect, my closet is in desperate need of some organizing TLC! Thanks Lauren :)

  • Philippa Levitt-Harwood

In my town we have a ‘swap shop’ we take our unwanted clothes in, look around and find what we want and then take it to the counter and do a swap with the shop owner. I find I can pick up loads of vintage items and the shop owner will tell me the story behind the piece of clothing. :)

  • Rachael Yanta

I have heard of the hanger turn around but have never done it before. I MUST do that this year b/c there are SO many things I don’t wear anymore but have such a hard time getting rid of things. Great tips!

  • Maria Rosa Herrera

i need to do that as soon as im in shape again ! but not ready yet. Id like to donate but ive never find places here in my country just when its winter in some other places i guess ill have to wait.

  • Christina Graci

if you have a walk-in, or just extra wall space in your closet or room, put some nails up to hang hats up. looks cute as room decor. I also use those hanging drop down organizers for shoes.

  • Susie Leckie

Thanks for the great tips Lauren!! I know you have done some previous posts in the past about this and so for the last couple months i have really been going at it in my closet. I currently take up all my closet and dresser, as well as our guest bedroom’s closet AND the hallway closet. It’s embarrassing, so thanks to some support on here and from other fellow bloggers, I have made a dent!! Read about it here: :) http://mylittlecookiejar.blogspot.com/2012/03/operation-closet-overhaul.html

My secret is never to mess up in my closet. Always try to have a certain organisation and it will never be too messed :)

  • Cathy Bui

I use shower rings to organize my belts and scarfs in my closet.. you can use them alone and put them in a single row.. or link them together and let them hang. I tried the first version for a while.. then i decided to link them to save room!.. it is a real room saver =) and clutter saver

  • Janice Campbell

I moved back in July of last year & now that I have a nice big walk-in closet it’s all organized. I used to share a closet with my boyfriend & only had half of it, so a lot of stuff was kept in suitcases. Now I have room to see everything. I find it easiest to go by color cause than you pick which color to wear that day and go from there :)

I clean it out every 6 months and donate to friend’s or charity :)

  • Kim W

Love love love the hanger idea! I can’t wait to get home and do it!

  • Larissa Wilhelm

Great tips Lauren! I’m definitely putting these into use. Only problem is going to be my mom, because she claims everything in my closet is brand new when in fact I’ve had a lot of stuff for 4-5 years. :-/

  • Jaclyn Schler

When deciding whether to keep or toss, ask yourself “”Would I feel pretty or excited wearing this tonight?”” If the answer is no, let it go! Why keep something you don’t feel amazing in? See all my closet and style tips at http://sharingmysole.blogspot.com/

I am obsessed with closet organizers! Baskets, hangers, different closet contraptions are so fun to me!! Also, I get great ideas from the home section on Pinterest! This makes me want to go through my closet right now! :)

Wow, I literally just finished organizing my entire closet last night! This helped me a lot when organizing my shoes http://www.amazon.com/ClosetMaid-15-Cubby-Shoe-Organizer-White/dp/B002IT6E6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332957675&sr=8-1

  • Enrica V.

I do exactly the same thing! :) PS: love the video and love Sex & the City… Carrie is fantastic!!! <3

  • Kellie Norton

That is seriously one of my favorite scenes of Sex and the City!! Whenever one of my girlfriends has a date, we do that sort of thing in our rooms so that our friend can let loose, shake off her nerves and find a really cute outfit :-) I definitely recommend it for picking out an outfit for a cute date or for organizing!

  • Nathalie

I’ve recently organized my closet, and sorted everything by item and color. You can read it on my blog:

  • Manon Berrevoets

My closet is really tiny. I can only hang four things up and have 5 shelfs.

So that doesn’t really help either. I seperate my winter and summer clothes.

spring and autumn are always in my closet. For the dresses and things that wrinkle fast, I have a hook.

I clean my closet thoroughly twice a year and donate the close to a good cause. Other than that I have no tips or tricks. All I wish for is a big closet.

  • Martin M

My closet is very often really messed but since I started to organize it once a week it isnt that messed up anymore. :)

Visit me and lets follow each other :) Always looking for new blogger friends

  • Heather Henderson

It’s almost time for me to go through my closest and sell lots of clothes to Plato’s Closet. Last year, I took in two full bins of clothes that I barely wore and used the money to buy some new trends that I was dying to have :)

  • Lala

I love the idea of turning the hangers backward! That’s so smart! Thanks for the tip!

  • Lala

Ps. I already had my closet organized by colour, but last year I used more tips that I read in your Style book. It was so helpful for so many things aside from oranizing my clothes! I am super excited for your beauty book! :)

  • Nieszka

I’ve recently organized my closet and turned the extra room in the house into a WALK-IN-CLOSET!! I installed the STOLMEN wardrobe system and hung everything up! I wrote about it on my blog here: http://memoriesoftimespast.blogspot.ca/2012/03/how-to-organize-your-closet.html

I find it so HELPFUL. Find clothes easily and keeps them wrinkle-free :)

I have to cull my closet at least every six months or I run out of room to buy new things :)

I love organizing my closet and getting rid of items I don’t wear anymore. The feeling of having a clean and organized closet can’t be beat!

To save some space, I’ll store my winter clothes away from my summer clothes in the summer, and vice versa.

Also, taking over a part of The Boyfriend’s closet is also a great way to create space for me! 😉

Using the same type of hangers throughout your closet makes a huge difference in terms of consistency and organization. Other than that, my closet looks like a disaster- so thanks for all of these ideas!!

  • toriawestcoast

i live in a few provinces away from my younger sisters, so when i do an annual clean-out i just box up all of the items i don’t wear and send it away : ] much easier, and it leaves most of the decisions up to them!

  • Carmeletha Thomas

I am doing my closet this weekend. I am dreading it. Thanks for the tips Lauren.

  • Valera Ved

Lauren, thanks for reminding, I also planned to organizi my closet once in 2 or 3 months, so, today I’m gonna do it :).

There’s aslo thought which helps me to break up with things: just remebmer that old, unneeded things can can take a space of something what is really needed and useful.

  • Jennifer VG

    Good tips!

I try to organize my wardrobe every seasons. I have a spring-summer-autumn-winter box. I don’t have enough space in my wardrobe so I put on warm jumpers (in summer), blouses and little dress for summer (in winter) etc.

Every seasons I try all my clothes and give some clothes to my friends so..I can buy new ones :)

  • maha

    I want thoes shoes :(!!

  • Chris

i really don’t like the idea of getting rid of some stuffs but i love my closet to be organized, i do it at least once a year, but i should do it more often. Thanks for the tips. Also i categorized my closet by items, all my dress together, then trousers, skirts, etc.. so i know exactly where to look and for my t shirts i piled them by color. i also bought colour boxes, in one i put my summer shoes i know i won’t need them in the city and it will only be when i travel) and in the other boxes my ballerina and in the last one my scarves all folded nicely.

  • Casey Lynn

Definitely my favorite scene from the whole movie :)

I am pretty good about donating anything that I am not making use of, but I am also pretty messy when it comes to hanging up, folding, putting things back where they belong… etc. Once a month sounds good to me! Starting now I will do this too!

  • Christina Cintron

Love this idea ! so helpful

  • Molly Zimnoch

What a great post! Organizing your closet is always a much-needed task, and this serves as a great reminder and guide. I’m graduating college in a few weeks, and this is one of my biggests concerns, and now a project to tackle when I move home! Thanks, Lauren!

  • Karmele Garcia

Great ideas Lauren! I will put them in practice :)

  • Risa Takeshima

I always wear the same cloth that I like, so cloth that I don’t wear piles and piles in the closet for a long time. Though they are attractive when I found in the shop. Why do things look less attractive after a few weeks past? No idea.

  • Leanne

    I desperately need to reorganise….

  • sophie richardson

i have recently had my bedroom dercorated just the wy ive halwaus wanted it and now i have gained ocd with it , everything much be checked once a week. decorating my room has possibly been the best ive ever done, im the tidiest person i know now :)♥

  • Christina Lo

omgosh, lauren! I TOTALLY do the switcheroo thing! I never like to repeat my outfits during the school year, so i do that so i’ll remember which things i’ve already worn during the year, so i won’t wear it again!

  • Vanessa R

Great ideas! I definitely need to organize my closet!

  • Noelia Yovera Solano

so funny!!!!! i will do it!!!:D

Mine is always a mess… I gotta try these tips and do better.

  • Alexandra Kiladjian

Such a good Idea and I just cleaned my closet this weekend and gave so much away! My friends loved it! and it makes you feel so clean after. I also gave away a bunch of clothes I got from family that I never wore.

  • Samantha Curtis

I really love the switcheroo idea. It makes total sense!

I have adored this blog and have been able to keep my closet clean and organized for months!!! (This is a HUGE deal for me!) I use colored stickers (usually used for garage sales) to put on the tags of my clothing. When I wear the clothing I take it off and throw it away, at the end of two months when I go through my closet if items have the sticker still attached….I obviously do not wear them and I give them away! This makes things so much easier, I used to justify clothing (maybe I could wear that…) and now if I won’t wear it and don’t wear it, it is out! :) My closet feels so much more like ME now!

  • Megan R.

I am all for the once a year clean out of the closet. Since my birthday and Christmas are just two weeks apart I normally do my closet clean out during December and then donate all things that I 1. haven’t worn in the past year or 2. don’t fit anymore so that others can get some new clothes during the holidays that might not be able to afford them. It is a win-win!

An easy way to keep track of what you wear/don’t wear is to turn your hangers around backwards in January and at the end of each season if the hanger is still backwards you know that you didn’t wear it.

  • Christine

Funny, today I was thinking of doing this. Here’s what I really want to do given the time. Make a vision board of all the cute looks in this Spring and then clean out my closet and see what I have that works for those looks. I know I have pretty much everything I need I just can’t find it because my closets a train wreck!!!! If I do the vision board, I know I will be inspired to clean out!

  • Kakes

Im always cleaning out my closet and if items are still in good condition i sell it on an app i found called poshmark. Its a great app and cost me nothing cause the buyer buys my items and pays for shipping. Labels are then sent to me via email. And i order free boxes on USPS.com. Its a great app and if anyone is interested in selling old clothes that are still in great condition its a great way to get rid of old clothes and make a little money. Use Promo code HBXOB for a $5 credit. I hope this helps a few of you!!!! :)

  • Ashley McDougall

I love the idea of this! I tend to be an organized person already, but that’s why I love these tips even more!

A few months ago I get rid of a flower blouse and I’m still crying. However, it was a good thing because no matter how attached I was to that blouse (because of the flowers I’m a sucker of them) the rounded neck wasn’t appropriate for me because I’m rounded face. But since that day my closet was almost new because getting rid of that blouse, gave me courage to finish with other pieces ; ) What a good trick of mine for now on.

  • k a s e y ~ <3

I recommend different colored storage bins for clothes that are only wore in the certain season. e.g. Have a blue storage bin or the clothes you only wear in the winter and a red one for the clothes you only wear in the fall.
As that season rolls by take you clothes out of the bin and fold them in your dresser or hang them in your closet with the other clothes you wear year round. :)

SCARF HANGERS has a versatile swivel hook which can hang over the door as a space saving organizer for an awesome display of your scarves, mufflers, head wraps, or ties for easy access when you have no room in the closet, or you don’t want your fashion treasures to get crushed with other clothes.
