Shape Up: My Favorite Winter Sweats

Here in LA our winters are marked by cool breezes, the occasional downpour and random temperature drops to a whooping 58-degrees! (I know, our winter is wimpy.) That being said, I would be lying if I told you my favorite winter workouts included regular jaunts down the slopes and cross-country skiing. Instead, I tend to stick to the gym and go on hikes. I also do a lot of kickboxing during the winter as well. But whenever I get a chance, I like to trek up to the mountains for some snow filled fun (and exercise)…

Luckily the snow isn’t too far away from where I live. In 3 hours or less, I can drive past the tree line, right up to the lifts. I suppose that’s one of the beautiful things about living in Southern California.

If you have access to the slopes, I encourage you to ski and snowboard those calories away. You can burn up to 350 calories from one hour of skiing/snowboarding. It works a lot of muscle groups at once, which will maximize your workout. If you’re not one for skiing or snowboarding, build a snowman or have a snowball fight. You can burn up to 300 calories doing either of these activities for an hour! Not bad for a workout, right?

What are your favorite winter workouts?

XO Lauren

I would love to go skiing some day! I usually just love running on my tred or doing Tae Bo. Snowball fights are the best! They really do burn those calories too:) Can’t wait to live in the country so I can do more things in the snow:) Thanks for this post Lauren! xoxo

I wouldn’t call if a fave workout but shoveling the driveway/walk ways is an workout! Total body strength, with a little cardio and you’re killing two birds with one stone. What could be better?!

When it’s nice out, I like to take long walks during winter. But other than that, I stay indoors and do workout videos!

gin gimlet recipe > my new post — and a reason why we should workout, lol!

I love to run outside– when it’s cold or when it’s hot! I hate working out inside. :)

I love to ski, but I must admit I’m more of a good-weather-skiier. I’m training for a marathon in november so I’m running 3 or 4 times a week. This week I went to Monte Carlo and ran down the boulevard.. didn’t care it was only 7AM and I went to bed only 5 hours before, it was downright a-ma-zing.

I love to ski, however, we are having a freaky warm winter in OH and it has not snowed enough. Being forced to work out inside, I’ve decided to try out different classes for my workouts, like pole dancing, zumba, booty beat (yes that’s a class) and adult balet as well as adult hip hop. I’m having so much fun learning new dance moves while burning a ton of calories at the same time :)

We have super long winters where I live, so I like to take advantage of it and go snowshoeing, snowboarding, and sledding. It’s amazing how fast time goes! But my legs really feel the burn the next day. :)

It’s not super cold where I live, kind of like how it is in LA. I live in the south though! :)

Snowboarding rocks. Just came back from the moutains few days ago and going snowboarding again in a week, can’t wait. I hope that you will have a chance to hit the slopes this year :)

Where I live we haven’t got that much snow!! So I’ve been doing zumba !!! It’s so much fun!!:DD

  • Kellie Norton

I love going snow skiing! Its the perfect way to “”forget”” you’re working out because it truly is so much fun! Last time I checked, Mississippi doesn’t have any mountains so I usually have to stick to the gym, but once I year I try to make it to the mountains to have some fun :)

well i’m in Indiana and we have 6inches so far and it’s still coming down! We could pile it all up and make a ski slope lol…I can’t snowboard to save my life! Now a skateboard, that’s a dif story :)

I live in Finland and we have a lot of snow. I’m dog sitting at the moment a little puppy and I have been walking him a lot during the past week. Usually I go to the gym but because of my furry friend I have understood how much I enjoy walking and running as well :))

Here is a link to my furry friend :)

I live in Central New York (which wins the gold snowball award every year) and there is about three skiing resorts within 45 minutes of my house. Funney enough I have never skied or snowboard before.

  • Isabella g.

I live in Brasil so its summer here !! In the winter we dont have snow, actually ive never seen snow !! if we’re in the beach on winter, we make bonfires, if we’re in the city we go to bars..nothing that lose weight hahahahah..

I can never stick to a regular work out plan! I live in nebraska and its 70 degrees one day and below 20 the next so I try to stick to things i can do inside such as yoga. But snowboarding is sooo much fun!!

  • Lauren Mortensen

I live in Salt Lake City and absolutely love snowboarding! Unfortunately, I am TERRIBLE at it. I do agree that it is a phenomenal workout though. I have never been more sore in my entire life than the first time I went.

  • Janella Haf

    well Lauren, snow isn’t my favourite topic at the moment, we could change our homes for a while (;
    that’s what I want:

Ugh..i wish we had the LA weather! Its sooooooo cold where I live!

  • Corryn Batykefer

I live in Florida so during the winter seems like the best time to work out. It isn’t overwhelmingly hot or humid. Running is amazing in our “”winter”” months.

  • Casey Wheat

I live in Idaho, really close to mnts, but sadly for the frist yea r in a loonnnggg time…..NO SNOW! its heart breaking, and as soon as our slopes open Im dichting school and hitting the slopes

  • Aja Doe

I adore skiing/snowboarding! We used to take our yearly skiing trip to the Rockies growing up. I don’t live in the mountains and never have, so I can’t afford the lift tickets/gas/hotel/rentals right now. I went last year or the year before snowboarding for the first time. So much fun! *sigh* There’s always next year.

I also live in Utah and luckily LOVE to snowboard! Living in Utah you kinda have to love the snow because it always comes in the winter, and sometimes stays a LONG, LONG time. It is such a fun GOOD workout to do and get away from the gym and the normal usual things you do. another fun thing to do is go to the mountains find a hill and sled! You get GREAT workout climbing up the hill after each run, but so worth it cause sledding is!
