Lip Service: How to Cure Chapped, Dry Lips

Baby it’s cold outside… Winter is a wonderful time of year, but the chapped lips that come with it are not so great. While lip balms may provide temporarily relief, it’s better to get to the root of the problem: Your lips are thirsty!

First off, you should always be consuming an average of two to three liters of water each day. Dehydration can cause excessive lip dryness. And no one needs a case of granny lips. This may come as a surprise, but it’s particularly important to increase your water intake during the winter. Wintertime conditions are actually tougher on your skin than summer. Who knew?

In addition to consuming enough water, one of the best ways to directly hydrate your pout is by pressing cold, sliced up cucumber onto your lips for a few minutes. According to Whole Living Daily and Home Remedies, cucumber has many healing properties that help heal, relieve dryness and reduce irritation.

Next time your lips are cracked or chapped, look to your veggie drawer!

What a great tip! My lips are super chapped from the change of weather that’s been happening in Boston. I’ll be sure to put a cucumber on my shopping list!

I love kitchen remedies! I tend to be a lip licker and biter, so this cucumber tip will be fun to try.

I’m sure this remedy is nothing new to most of you, but olive oil, honey, and sugar make a wonderful lip scrub! The sugar sloughs off any dry skin while the olive oil and honey make them instantly soft and moisturized. Not to mention how amazing the scrub feels!

Drink a lot of water and apply carmex on your lips before you go to bed. You will wake up with soft and healthy lips.

  • Crystal Cierlak

I put Vaseline on my lips every day and I never have problems. A travel-size jar of it costs $1 and lasts for months.

  • Shellz

Blistex lip medex and nivea milk n honey balm are the only things that work for me. Cant live without

  • Stacie Grissom

Put honey some minutes in the lips, the honey is rich in vitamins and minerals. Helps heal wounds and has antibiotic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and antiallergic.

  • Kelby Peachey

Although its the wrong time of year, my family and I use apple cider vinegar on sunburns! It takes the sting out of the burn and you are less likely to blister!

  • earthangel

I put Aquaphor on my lips before bed. In the morning they are totally healed and moisturized!

  • Lindsey Hager

Thank you sooooo much for this blog, Lauren!!! My lips have been so dry for about a month and none of the lip glosses I’ve tried have worked. Even Carmex! And I drink PLENTY of water/day!

  • gina pensavalle

a little dab of olive oil get soaked up within minutes and leaves my lips moist and pink

  • Brittany Origer

Actually, Carmex was recently found to create a decline in lip health….certain ingredients in carmex are meant to dry your lips so you’ll keep buying and using it.

Also, vaseline does not add moisture, only seals in moisture already there so apply a good lip balm-my favorite is Burt’s Bees Honey lip balm. $2.99 at walgreens.

My favorite at home lip treatment is mixing a tsp of honey with a tsp of sugar and a few drops of olive or coconut oil. Massage some of the mixture into lips with your index finger and rinse. Put lip balm on and go.

The sugar removes dead skin on lips and the honey and olive/coconut oil moisturize and condition. I do it 1-3 times a week in winter and it will keep for a week if covered at room temperature.

  • Brittany Origer

I make a body scrub similar to this. I use 1 Tbsp of honey, 1/2 c. coffee grounds(used or fresh) and 1/3 c. coconut oil(but olive oil can definitely be substituted).

  • Helen Le

Wow interesting. I always apply lip balm like mad crazy during the winter. I didn’t realize I was dehydrated. But 2-3 liters of water… I don’t know about that.

  • Kimmy S

Wow, I had no idea about this tip. Thanks so much for the heads up! And I never knew about drinking more water during the winter… Oh the things I learn on!

  • Mithra

I get chapped lips easily in the winter so I make this lip scrub and it works really good and it’s cheap!:)
You’ll need 1 teaspoon of sugar and honey and

  • Gina Mackey

One thing I do for chapped lips (and it works as a great face scrub too!) is to take sugar (brown or white, your choice) and lemon (or lemon juice – just make sure it’s organic!) and scrub. This takes off the dead skin on your lips and if you lick your lips, it tastes just like lemonade! :) This was a tip from a make up artist in Hollywood and I do it all the time. No need for lip balm. No waiting time and it leaves you with soft lips (and skin!)

And, @Mithra – I think I’m going to try your idea too!

  • Janella Haf

i always but some honey on my lips (:

    two effects:
    it’s yummie
    AND really helps try lips

  • Jennifer Sellen

  • Marisabel Riera Cubillan

I do the lips exfoliation with oatmeal and honey is a good option to have some nice lips

  • Ellen Young

You can also use a toothbrush to gently exfoliate your lips too.

  • Jenna Khattab

Use warm tea bags or cold spoons to wake up tired morning eyes.

For everyone with dry lips in the winter, I got addicted to lip balms after a year with Accutane in my 20’s (I’m in my 40’s now) and my best recommendation is MAC Hydrating Lip Conditioner…the little jar lasts forever and it’s worth it’s weight in gold! The best I ever used, and I used a lot! Sinks in, not waxy, smooths and conditions instantly and truly hydrates without feeling like you have junk on your lips It’s part of my nightly fall-winter bedtime ritual! Contains Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Avocado Extract, Wheat Germ Oil, vitamins A and E, only $15!

Use a hot compress, wash cloth, and gently rub your flaky lips in a circular motion. helps to remove the dry/dead skin :) Now go kiss somebody….

  • Samantha Ames

This is going to be really useful for me. Thank you!

This is the best for dry, flaky lips! Get about a tablespoon of natural cane sugar (ex. Sugar In The Raw) and mix it with just enough olive oil to make it like a paste (it should only take a couple of drops). Mix and apply to your lips using your finger or a cheap toothbrush. Exfoliate and rinse! It’s awesome because it keeps your lips moisturized and lipstick ready!

  • Melissa mould

Love this. great tips. I love bright pink lipstick xx
