With dozens of trends constantly coming and going in the world of fashion, it can be hard to determine which looks are the most flattering for your body type. I must admit it's taken me a few fashion faux pas myself to learn the tricks of the trade. But I've found that dressing to flatter my figure is truly a rule of style–no matter how much I love a trend, it has to work on my frame. Today I'll be sharing 10 of my favorite foolproof styling tips to keep your look on-point and looking lean, no matter what. Without further ado, here is my go-to guide for dressing yourself the flattering way:
- Pick peplums. This lovely trend not only looks adorable in the form of a skirt, top, or dress, it also flatters your figure. A peplum cinches at the waist, so it keeps your upper body looking trimmed while hiding a not-so-flat tummy.
- Instantly slim. Elastic body suits work to kind of "hold everything together." They're one of the greatest inventions if you want to create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette in a snap. One of the best brands I've found is ResultWear. Personally, I think shapewear should be reserved for special occasions. For example, if you were going to be wearing a skin tight silk dress, throwing on a shaping slip from ResultWear would be wise. When necessary, these undergarments can work miracles, solve fashion crises and give you an instantly svelte shape.
- Choose small, tight prints. Bigger prints make you look bigger. It's as simple as that. If you're concerned about this, stay away from oversized patterns. Instead, opt for small, tight prints la Prada's Fall 2012 collection. Small patterns distract the eye from trouble spots and create an overall proportioning effect for your figure. Plus, this trend happens to be very in for fall, so why not give it a try?
- Go head-to-toe monochromatic. While I do have a soft spot for color blocking, it's not the best way to lengthen your silhouette. But wearing the same color head-to-toe? Now that's a tinting trick that works. Going monochromatic creates a longer, leaner figure because it doesn't chop up your body. Wearing an all-black ensemble is your best bet for looking lean, but since I'm a girl who loves color, head-to-toe anything will do the trick.
- Try a side-paneled dress. Side paneling on clothing tricks the eye into believing that the body is slimmer than it actually is. Dark side paneling virtually "cuts away" the sides of your silhouette, making you appear narrower. Designers like Stella McCartney, Jason Wu, and Cynthia Rowley all showcased side-paneled dresses in their fall 2012 collections. Not only is this look flattering, it's also in season and can be found at a variety of price points.
- Choose heels that lengthen your legs. If you're in the market to give your gams some length, stay away from heels with ankle straps. Straps at the ankle create a horizontal line that chops up the leg, making it look shorter than it actually is. Instead, choose heels in nude or flesh-tone shades to create the illusion of longer, leaner legs.
- Get tailored. One style tip I swear by is making sure my clothes fit me perfectly. No one looks good in frumpy fits. If you ask me, ill-fitting clothes can make you look up to 10 pounds heavier. No thank you. Keep your look streamlined and sleek by paying a visit to your tailor. Get your pants hemmed, dresses fitted and tops modified as needed. If your clothes fit properly, you will look and feel your best.
- Wear the right undergarments. We all underestimate the importance of wearing the correct size bra and underwear. In general, undergarments are an often-overlooked category of clothing. If a bra is too tight, it can create bulges around your torso. Same goes for panty lines, ladies. I cannot stress this enough–wear undergarments that are the correct size. This will keep your silhouette smooth and bulge-free.
- Slim with the right sleeves. If your arms aren't your best assets, don't choose a top with sleeves that hit where they are widest. (Short sleeves and cap sleeves are often the worst offenders for most women.) Billowy sleeves that cover the upper arm or longer sleeves that hit mid-forearm are the most flattering.
- Say goodbye to muffin tops and pooches. Muffin tops and pooches–neither of these are areas any woman wants to accentuate. To keep your silhouette lump-free, avoid low-rise bottoms. Instead, wear high-waisted fits to flatten the front and cinch your waistline. It's also important to avoid tight, short, and light-colored tops. These tops will only draw attention to problem areas. Rather, go for dark, printed, or flowy blouses.
While these tips are guidelines to help you achieve a leaner look, the most important thing is to understand your own body shape and wear what works for you. Forget trends (they come and go), what's important is that you wear what's best for you.

i have a rather stern face and pear shape body which annoy me a lot.
I seem manly..how to embrance the femine look?? -
Oh girl no. Peplums?? Clearly you have never been above a size 6 because us 12+ (i.e., ladies with hips) know to avoid that shit! -

My biggest dilemma is probably finding a well fitted bathing suit for my larger bust. It's so difficult to find one that covers me enough and flatters my body. -

Hi :) how can I know the correct size undergarments? Like when shopping for bras, I'm not sure, I just kinda pick up what looks cute and may fit, but I have bras ranging inbetween two or three sizes, haha.
Also, any suggestions on the mid-forearm shirts when it's cold out? It irriates me to wear coats or layering. I feel like I wanna pull the sleeve down to my wrists, but can't.
Lastly, in regards to shorts I have a hard time finding a pair that works for me. I have fair skin, and most shorts I find are really short and my thighs are kinda big, so I'm not sure what to do. I wear leggings for something more cool, but would love to find some shorts that don't make me look too big, or pale. Any tips? :)
Thanks,
xo J

Joya,
If you go into a lingerie store (like Victoria's Secret) they will do a sizing for you with measuring tape. It's not too awkward. Then they will bring some to you in the correct size. If you don't usually buy from a lingerie store (I can't,personally, because I live in a tiny town), you'll at least know the correct size!
Good luck!

I am 5'6. And I wear a 12 size in jeans but I wear a dress size 8-10. I have a large butt and muscular thighs but I have a tiny waist. I also have a very long torso. What sort of pants/dresses and tops can I wear to show off my curvy figure?

My biggest problem is that I'm petite in height (4'10"), but not around. I generally wear a size 12-14 and it's really hard to find pants that are the right length, but aren't huge in the thigh area. Just 'cause I have a belly doesn't mean I have thunder thighs! LoL.

My biggest problem about my body is the lower half of my body: hips and thighs. So, I like to wear tops that emphasizes my skinny waist and flatters my body type. First step to dressing your body is to accept it! :)

I recently bought this dress and it has an elastic type clinch on the waist area. The problem is that I have a little extra weight on my stomach and love handels.

Biggest problem while getting dressed: long torso. High waisted clothing works for my figure, but always comes with the luxury of a camel toe. Help!

It's actually been really hard for me to find clothes that flatter my body because I have gained a little weight over the summer (I went to Europe, and the food is just irresistable!) so most of my clothes are a little too tight. I also recently started school again, and it's been hard for me to wear clothes that impress without me looking chubby. So this post has DEF helped soooo much!!! thank youuu!! I've also realized that I need to accept my body until I loose weight. But for now this post was an amazing help! Lauren, you are the best!

Ooooh! I agree on the high-waist pant! In Sweden we're fortunate enough to have the label Cheap Monday (one of H&M:s more street-oriented labels). They sell the most flattering (and cheap!) high-waisted assortment of skinny denim's in all washes and colors. I really wish more labels would offer high-waist pants though. I'm SO over having to worry about showing my crack or muffin top... Seriously, ain't nobody wanna see that :)

I'm going on a date and it will be very warm, that means the outfits I wanted to wear are simply not possible to wear for this kind of weather. What can I wear that's flattering and doesn't make you sweat?

High-waisted pants are a must for me. They are a lot more flattering than low-rise pants, especially if you're petite like me. The trouble is, like Rose Otero commented, finding a pair!
-
high waist denim shorts! Excuse me! I seriously can not find them anywhere. Friends have given me some opinions to DIY. But, the thought of my doing anything DIY is difficult.

Big dilemma right here! What kind of clothes should one wear if you don't have the perfect legs to rock skinny jeans or skirts? -

My baby is 8 months old, and while I've lost 55 pounds so far (40lbs of baby weight, and working on wedding weight) my stomach is the last to go. My legs and arms look great- but my stomach is holding me back. My body has changed completely. I'm having a hard time feeling good about the way I look.
