Word to the wise: wrinkles are inevitable (sorry ladies, I only speak the truth). Whether we like it or not, they are a part of life. Needless to say, there are many simple tricks you can work into your everyday routine to keep them at bay.
Here are my top ten tips for not looking like this:
- Don't be a straw dog. Try not to use straws (and definitely do not smoke). Pursing your lips constantly will cause micro lines to become serious crevices. No thank you.
- Sleep smart. Believe it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to sleep (in terms of positioning at least). The wrong way: sleeping on your face or side. The right way: sleeping on your back (even the American Academy of Dermatology recommends this).
- Slather the SPF. No surprises here: SPF is a must if you want smooth, youthful looking skin. While a tan might look good now, don't forget who you will look like later...this! (Click here to learn about what ingredients I recommend looking for when buying sunscreen.)
- Moisturize. Prevent cracks and keep your skin soft and supple by moisturizing your face (and body) twice a day.
- Sleep clean. Always, always wash your face before bed. I cannot stress this enough. Never, ever sleep with makeup on.
- Wear your sunnies! Not only are sunglasses a great style staple, they also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from harsh UV rays. Just make sure you buy sunnies that are polarized to ensure maximum protection. And the bigger, the better! (I definitely just gave you a wonderful excuse to go buy a new pair of sunglasses. So use it! Click here to check out my favorite sunnies.)
- Take your vitamins. Take a multi-vitamin every day and make sure you're getting enough omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.
- Eat right. You are what you eat so be sure to make your diet vibrant and full of color. Do this by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday. This will keep your skin firm, hydrated and happy.
- Drink up. You're only 8 glasses away from happy skin...don't forget your h2-ohhhs.
- Smile! While science has yet to prove the direct link between wrinkles and stress, based on my experience the evidence is pretty clear. Stress manifests itself externally (and from what I've seen, wrinkles are a common symptom). Take a deep breath, exhale and smile!
That said, if you already have wrinkles–wear them proudly! I have little smile wrinkles. Most women my age would freak out, but to be honest, I kind of like them. As Lauren Hutton once said, "We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life." Couldn't have said it better myself...but it can't hurt to make those "medals" a little less obvious before you join the half-century club. Right?
Is there an old beauty wives' tale you'd like demystified? Let me know in the comments below.

hey,, also you should take "opc grape seed extract" (i translate it at google, so im not sure if its right in english) ;)
this thing will let you look young for years, believe me its the best and its natural.
your teeth will be whiter, your eyes will shine more, your skin looks more younger and fresher, and lot more.
its never to late to start with it =)

unless you are pregnant, and have-to lay on your side :) Since I've had my son I've noticed I can't sleep on my back anymore, habit I guess. Maybe that's why I see some fine lines showing up around my eyes. :)

woah! i did not know that even drinking with a straw could cause wrinkle lines! :-O

Wise words:) Thanks a lot for these tips!
I think, one of the most popular and confirmed beauty tale is that anti-aging products and stuff like that really help...thats bullsh*t.
In my opinion the affect of your psyche on your skin shouldn't be underrated AND of course a healthy way of life is the alpha & omega:) So I totally agree with that and try every day to live under these rules, even though often it's not that easy:)

hmm, all my text did not show?! Anyways, I don't agree with you about sleeping on your back. Best is child postition (everyone who does yoga knows this postition) ! Also do not lotion your body everyday, it starts to grave even more and itchying get wrose. It's like don't wash your hair everday either!

Getting enough sleep, regardless of how you are positioned is also so important. I use bio around my eyes and I plaster my face in SPF 50.

Ahhhh! I'm THE WORST at washing my face before bed AND I'm a side/stomach sleeper. Hopefully the fruits, veggies & water I take in daily really do help with prevention. No wrinkles yet! ... but I am only 23. :) Posts like this, with tips and tricks, make developing good habits fun. It's almost like a challenging healthy-lifestyle checklist. Thanks Lauren!
