Instead of doing a Tuesday Ten post today, I decided to blog about the recent resort 2012 runway shows. From New York for Paris, dozens of designers showcased their collections for the post-holiday season. Here are my notes on the season's key looks along with some tips on how you can incorporate these trends into your daily wardrobe...
But first, what is resort wear?
Many designers have started showing resort collections in addition to their standard spring and fall lines. Resort was originally known as "cruise wear," which was promoted by upscale fashion houses and stores to appeal to their wealthy clients who typically vacationed in warm weather climates after the holidays. However, resort wear has evolved to something much more mainstream. Now, the fashion industry views resort wear as a "specialized year-round clothing style and fashion season." The idea is that many people visit or live in tropical or resort-like destinations. To accommodate, designers have created "resort collections." Resort wear is characterized as easy to clean, travel-friendly and most importantly, fashion-forward clothing. Simply put, think of resort wear as year-round fashionable travel and leisure clothing.
Now for the major trends spotted on the resort 2012 runways...

A look from Michael Kors
Catch a wave! Weather it's scuba inspired gear at Michael Kors and Derek Lam, Hawaiian print pieces at Stella McCartney and Givenchy, or south-of-the-border cuts at Proenza Schouler–one thing is clear for 2012: surfs up! To work this trend, I suggest playing with texture and fabric. For example, try a neoprene bandeau top layered under a lightweight tank. Or, opt for a pair of tropical print shorts and a color block top. Either way, just be careful and limit yourself to one aspect of this trend. Too many at once can be the makings of a wipeout!

Sporty zipper details at 3.1 Phillip Lim
Athleticism. In the words of fashion's newest design darling, Joseph Altuzarra, "zip-up and go" is the key phrase for 2012 resort trends. Other fashion houses that hit the note: Bottega Veneta, Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Balenciaga. Translate this trend to your closet by stocking up on shorts, strappy heels, and sporty dresses and zip front tops.

Colorful (cropped) pants at Prabal Gurung
Color code. After the onslaught of greys and blacks that overtook the fall runways, it was refreshing to see designers make use of color! I personally love wearing color, so I was pleased to see Prabal Gurung incorporate unexpected pops of grapefruit pink, turquoise and yellow throughout his collection. Other notable collections include Chloe's orange outbursts, Alice + Olivia's punchy colored pieces, Burberry Prorsum's canary yellow coats and aqua blue accents and BCBG Max Azria's rainbow of draped, flowy garments. Take this trend to the streets by embracing color. Instead of wearing that black skirt, swap it out for an orange one. Or, wrap a brightly hued belt around that LWD (little white dress).
Other major resort trends included ladylike layers and tailoring (seen at Chloe), cropped pants (seen almost everywhere), tea and knee length skirts, and graphic floral prints (as seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Celine).

I absolutely loved Alice and Olivia and Marc by Marc Jacobs! I can see myself wearing that.
I was disappointed in The Row and Stella McCartney. I usually love all their pieces but this was awful IMO

I think Nina Ricci has a gorgeous line and showed some of the perfect feminine looks for summer. It isn't athletic or intended for water the colors are gorgeous.

Oh wow.... that wetsuit inspired look from Michael Kors is horrifying!!! I hope the trend does not catch on. What a perfect outfit to horrify the future _What not to Wear_ show audiences!!!

This is so cool! I've never heard of resort clothing (maybe cause I'm not rich) but I do love the ease and style that it has! Michael Kors is my favorite and his bright colors are simply fab :)

Definitily, my favourite its the one of Joseph Altuzarra, i really like the color, its chic, its classic.
I also like the use of color of the different designers, i think its refreshing too,
Im not agree with the look of Michael Kors, altought i think its very unusual and original, its not for everybody, and its really depends on the weather and the type of the body.

I loved the catch a wave ! This hot, bright pink is so in, and it actually makes you feel that you can surf in it ... and in style ! Michael Kors has such a clear statement in what he wants to show, and he completly achived in it again ... its amazing
I also liked the Color Code, there it is the hot pink again, so tasteful... mixed with the black and white ... so gorgeous! Loved it!
Thanks Lauren ! Do more posts like this ! I really liked this notes that you made, giving your opinion!

LOVE the neoprene trend! That model looks like she stepped right off of a surfboard and onto the runway. Cool twist on the fanny pack too..
Also love how Stella McCartney has been mixing hawaiian-esque or tropical prints with stripes, it's a combo I may not have dared to try on my own, but it works!

First, I love this post!!! I hope we get to see more of your take on high fashion and specific designers!! I am completely OBSESSED with the Burberry Prorsum line! The trench coats, the dresses and the skirts are all amazing!! I also love how most of their line is neutral colors or more subdued colors and then they have loud bursts of color. I think this makes it so much more dramatic when the turquoise and the yellows and such make an entrance!

I love the colour code trend, i really want some brightly coloured trousers or 'pants' as you call them, topshop do these lovely bright trends in various fabrics, chino's, jeans, loose fitting, jogging bottoms, all in block colours, i am definatly going to invest in some! xoxo

That's the fun part about high fashion! Most of it comes off as completely un-wearable, but the micro trends you see are what you need to look into becuase that is what we can translate to steet style (and will keep you ahead of the trends). It's about imagining how you can take a look from the runway to your closet :-)

The colorful pants are ok and I own shoes that zippers on them so that's cool. Everything else I would never wear.
