Sip This: A Green Smoothie That Doesn’t Taste Like Grass!

Jan 21, 2013 at 5:00am by Alex Gariano
zVhT3c8uXE1VvFFvJm2l32Fn.jpeg:Amazon:photo

Seeing as fitness is on everyone’s mind, I thought it would be fun to share one of my favorite super-healthy smoothie recipes with you today. I stumbled across the Revitalizing Kale Smoothie on Better Eats and cannot seem to get enough of it. It’s easy to make and it doesn’t taste like grass. The best part is that it will give you energy and that sought after green-smoothie-glow (I swear, it’s one of my secrets to great skin).

I like to precut all of the ingredients at the beginning of the week (minus the banana) and keep them in pre-measured baggies. This way it’s really easy to make smoothies for myself in the mornings when I’m rushing to get out the door. This smoothie isn’t limited to early mornings though—it makes for an excellent snack or on-the-go lunch, too. Here’s the recipe… I hope you enjoy this adapted recipe from Better Eats it as much as I do!

Revitalizing Kale Smoothie

nrYBAaU404vj2s3ryG5bhxAu.jpeg:Amazon:photo

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw kale, chopped
  • 1 frozen banana, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds (Trader Joes sells them near the cereal section and most health food stores carry them as well.)
  • 1 squeeze of lemon
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 bunch mint, for garnish

Directions

  1. Add bananas, kale, and mango to your blender.
  2. Squeeze about a teaspoon of lemon juice into the blender.
  3. Add chia seeds and almond milk.
  4. Blend until smooth.
  5. Add a few mint leaves as garnish, and enjoy!

The smoothie is about 300 calories and can serve as an excellent meal replacement or supplement. Sometimes if I need a little extra sugar I’ll add in a teaspoon or two of agave nectar or a few strawberries, which makes it taste even better than it already is… Either way, I highly recommend giving it a try!

I've tried this smoothie several times already and I love it! I use rice dream instead of almond milk, as I tend to get headaches from nut products, and it is delicious! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!

I love this smoothie! Like some of the other comments say, you need to add about a cup of water to thin it out enough to blend. It doesn't change the flavor, just makes it more drinkable.

just tried this today and it's so good! little tip: if you don't have a fancy blender, a food processor and a cup of water helps quite a bit (i ran into this issue and had to improvise).

Thanks so much for this recipe!! It inspired me to add a kale smoothie to my breakfast each morning. Mine is a little fruitier:

      - generous 8 oz almond milk
      - 1 cup raw kale
      - generous half cup frozen strawberries
      - scant half cup frozen mango
      - a couple shakes of cinnamon

It's delicious and I love getting all of the fruits and antioxidants in my morning. (And the cinnamon is for deliciousness and apparently helps with sugar regulation).

Ooooh, that looks good. My new favorite smoothie is a Green Pineapple Ginger Lime Smoothie:

      1/2 cup freshly squeezed o.j.
      Juice from 1/2 lime
      1 cup spinach
      1-1/2 cup fresh pineapple
      1/2 banana
      1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1/2 to 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
      1/4 tsp turmeric
      ice

Blend and get your green smoothie on. SO. GOOD.

Can we swap out the Kale for Spinach if we don't have kale? And the fruit for other fruit that we might have in the refrigerator? Just wondering what my options are with this smoothie! Thanks!
