I hope that everyone had a fun and safe holiday weekend! And if your weekend was anything like mine, then you spent plenty of time in the sunshine. While those early summer days are oh-so-enjoyable, they can sometimes leave you with an unwanted souvenir... a sunburn! I was able to avoid the burn this time around (mostly because the majority of my time was spent hiding under a giant floppy hat + umbrella while reapplying sunscreen hourly), but for the less protected, I've provided some suggestions for after the damage has been done:
Here are a few tips on how to deal with those less than desirable sunburns...
- Take Vitamin E to reduce inflammation from your sunburn.
- Drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
- Eat foods high in vitamin c (citrus fruits, strawberries, spinach), beta-carotene (chili peppers, kale, carrots), vitamin E (nuts, olives) or flax seed oil.
- Sliced cucumbers or cold wet tea bags help soothe and extract the sting.
- Take a cool shower.
- Avoid using any harsh soaps + perfumes on sunburned area.
- Keep skin moisturized. Try using a lotion with shea butter or palm oils for extra moisture.
Here are my favorite Kitchen Beautician remedies for a mild sunburn...
- Mix lavender oil and water together in a small spray bottle and keep it in your refrigerator. Mist your skin throughout the day to soothe the burn.
- Aloe vera can relive the pain of a sunburn. Try filling an ice tray with aloe vera and freezing it. Rub the frozen cubes onto the burn area.
- Mix baking soda into your bath and soak for about 15 minutes. Let skin air dry instead of drying off with a towel.
- Witch hazel has been known to reduce inflammation. It can be applied to a burn with a cotton ball or added to a bath.
Do you have any extra tips for soothing a sunburn?
XO Lauren

If you have been in the sun for an extended period of time and you think that you might get a wicked burn, before any redness/inflammation occurs take an advil. Ibuprofin is an anti-inflammatory drug and if you take it in time it willl drastically minimize your burn.

When I get sunburns, my mother always tells me to put vinegar on it because it will take out the burn and the red.

I love the ice cube of aloe idea! So creative and practical. Throw some in the cooler and you're ready for the beach.
The one rule I live by when I get a sunburn is that you need to cure it from the inside out: lots of water, food that helps soothe and vitamin are a big help.
If you need to put something on your skin, oil exacebaetes ANY burn; try to avoid lotions or creams with oils and stick to good 'ol aloe. It's water based and will help stop the skin from burning. Skin continues to burn even when you leave the sun; ever think you got a tan only to later find out you are perfectly pink? Once you have spent a day or two hydrating the skin, then move to something for moisture that is without perfumes and chemicals. Burt's Bees is ideal.

2 years ago a friend told me about Kool-Down (kooldown.com) lotion to try to clear up my daughter's horrible case eczema on her foot that steriods and everything else weren't working on. The Kool-Down worked, & it worked quickly. We use it for all skin issues, including sunburns and it is wonderful. We also have the rest of the line made for burns, any kind of burns. This stuff is a miracle in a jar/bottle. My son was badly sunburned this week and we had him cleared up in 2 days. I am currently waiting for my order and will also have this stuff on hand... or foot, or leg, or arm...

There is a soothing/cooling gel called Soothacaine I think, and it's blue. It has a little bit of lidocaine in it to help soothe and slightly numb the burn area. I'm not sure who makes it though.

Thanks Lauren!

- Make some green tea and let it cool down. Soak a clean towel into the green tea and put it on the sunburned area. The tea contains ingredients that helps reduce the redness..

Thanks Lauren and other people who commented! All of the tips are so helpful!!! I am constantly in the sun and I love laying out and reading my books, but i also have to be protected. I usually tan, but when i get a bad case of sunburn, I know that my new Burt's Bees Aloe and Linden Flower After Sun Soother is there for me! It cools you down and helps your burn and skin damage WHILE smelling AMAZINGGGG! i seriously recommend this stuff! And get it now online because it is only $8 (originally $14!!!) so go and buy it! seriously! xoxoxo

u know to get rid of a sunburn u could also apply a little bit of yogurt directly on the sunburn...it helps the burning and reduces the redness. :)

I always put my aloe gel in the refrigerator, that way it's nice a cold for when I'm ready to put it on my burn. You'd think that it would be really uncomfortable going on a fresh burn, but it actually feels lovely. Mine is the fast-dry kind, so I apply a generous amount several times a day. It takes out the sting, as well as helps skin to stay moisturized and heal faster.

If your in a pinch, and dont have any Aloe or other remedies mentioned, 1 or 2 Asprins can really help. Because the reduce inflamation and redness, it's a little bit of relief and comfort. I have had my fair share of burns. I now take extra percautions and practice safe sun! But anyway, the Asprin does help for some time.

Perfect.
Thank God i've never been too much exposed at the sun(or in the hours of biggest risk to suburns), or if yes i'm always putting my skin protector hour by hour, and using my huge hat.
And because i love water, i'm like a fish always into it, the sun turns to burn even more, so i double my protection :)

Very good helpful advice! I tend to forget about sunscreen and everytime I walk away with a sunburn, I'm like, "Okay, seriously? I keep aging & ruining my skin!" You would think that would make me remember - but the problem is, I don't even realize that my errands sometimes involve me being outside more than I thought in our Texas (100+ degree weather). So needless to say, I NEEDED this blog! :) Thank you! - Angelle from San Antonio :)

ohh great ideas. I'm definitely all for wearing sunscreen but it's true sometimes you just get burned especially when biking or racing!
-
I'm a huge advocate for sunscreen as well. I'm always applying and re-applying no matter how much my friends make fun of me ;) I absolutely hate sunburns but every now and then I'll catch one on my face or shoulders. Thanks for the advice, I'm definitely referring back to this blog the next time I get a sunburn :)
