Eyebrows are one of the most important features that you can control on your face. That said, proper upkeep is essential. Many people ask me how I maintain my brows and which method I prefer: waxing, threading, or tweezing. All of these are great options and some techniques work better for some and not others. To simplify your life, I've put together the following quickie guide to help you decipher which means of brow grooming is best for you...
If you have sensitive skin...
Thread! Threading uses a string to remove hair and is a great option for those of you with delicate skin (or even Rosacea). While waxing tugs at the skin, threading barely has any contact with your skin so it doesn't lead to irritation. Additionally, threading doesn't remove the top layer of skin like waxing does so your makeup will stick to your skin properly and it won't lead to irritation if you're using a topical prescription cream either.
If you have coarse hair...
Wax! If you have thicker hair that grows back quickly, waxing is definitely the best option for you. Not only do most people see thinner, softer regrowth, they can also go longer in between waxes since the results are fairly long lasting. There are a few drawbacks though: 1. It can be expensive, 2. It can irritate skin (but the irritation typically goes away after a few hours), 3. It can remove tiny (virtually invisible) hairs on your face that help makeup stay in place.
If you don't want to break the bank...
Tweeze! Not only does tweezing give you a lot more control, it's also the most inexpensive way to maintain your brows. The most important thing to remember when plucking is to exercise restraint. Yes, you may want to pluck regrowth everyday, but be careful not to take it too far.
At the end of the day, the best recommendation I can make to you is to experiment with all three methods. Everyone's body reacts differently to things so it's important to see what works best for you. You may have coarse hair and find that you love the results threading yields. Or you may prefer waxing... Personally, I would love to wax my brows, but when I do I tend to breakout since I have sensitive skin so I try to stick to tweezing. But like it said, road test a few methods and see what you like best.
Which method do you prefer and why?

Hey Everyone! I'm a big fan of waxing...and like some other people mentioned if you're planning on waxing go with a center that has hard wax. It's much much much better for your skin because it only grabs onto the hairs and not the skin. I go to the European Wax Center in Tucson and the girls are all wonderfull at their job. They've even talked me into doing brazilian waxes and now I'm a huge fan of that as well. The only down side with waxing is how much it cost - eyebrows are generally $10-15 dollars depending on if its a clean up or reshaping appointment and they suggest on making appointents every 4 weeks. <3 -
I tweeze my brows. I'd love to be able to wax my brows, but I have really sensitive skin and the two just don't mix so well. Stacey Walsh made a comment earlier recommending hard wax. I will have to look into that.

I have course hair and I LOVE threading. It lasts forever and there is no redness or marks left like I used to get after waxing. -
I prefer to groom my eyebrows with tweezers...I have been blessed with non-bushy eyebrows so tweezers works with me. As for people who don't like tweezers, I think the best thing is threading, my sister threads her eyebrows and she gets the best results. Also, its not as painful as waxing!

I'm an esthetician (skin care therapist) and I highly recommend waxing your brows with hard wax! Unlike traditional wax that is removed with strips, hard wax is applied thickly and removed without strips. It doesn't stick to the skin, only the hair, so it's less painful, less damaging, and doesn't remove the top layer of skin. Many of my clients leave my treatment room without even looking like they've been waxed because there's little to no redness afterward. -
Hi, Lauren! Thank you for writing down these methods, I've never heard about the thread method before, but I'm gonna try it. I prefer waxing because it's quick and lasts longer than tweezing my brows. It's a little bit painful, but beauty has its price ;) xo -
Thanks for this post Lauren! I've been wondering for a while, and this is one of the most helpful things I've seen!

Your brows and hair are perfect. My hair makes me go crazy, even though it is super long and many had said to me that it looks great and they wished to have my hair. Problem is that I don't know what to do with it because it's so long. I don't have time to make curls and even if I did, they are vanished in few hours. Because they are super heavy and long, the curls cannot hold themselves.
Could you make a tutorial on how to make super long hair look great?

Lauren, I love it when your brows are thicker, darker and more natural-looking! I have thick dark brows and have had a hard time embracing mine, though! I tweeze, but it's really hard to exercise restraint when tweezing! -
I LOVE threading!! It lasts a long time, it's gentle on skin, and best of all it's exfoliating! The only thing is if you get it done with someone who isn't skilled it can hurt a bit! Upper lip hurts a lot more than eyebrows, but it's so much better than waxing because all the pulling with waxing can cause premature wrinkles.

I waxed my eyebrows a couple of times many years ago, but my skin got too red. I did like the clean look, but tweezing just became more convenient. But Sometimes I get tweezer happy and mess up my eyebrows

I'm not going to lie, I LOVE the feeling of getting my eyebrows waxed. Unfortunately I only wax them about 3x a year because of the money so I tweeze them myself. -

I was 12 when i started to get my eye brows done, my mam use to tweeze them for me. No shape or anything just the main hairs. after i seen her doing it for a while i finally started myself and i shaped them. Now looking back i tweezed them way to much. After a long month of work i let them grow back completely and i went away and i decided to get them waxed and they looked so much more amazing, the shape had completely changed and i had full eye brows again. I much prefer getting them waxed. -
The only one I haven't done is thread! I've been wanting to, but where I live we don't have a place to do it. I will have to try it when I get the opportunity to! Thanks for the information!

Hi Lauren!
Haven't you also said, some time ago, that it is also good to comb your eyebrows up and then clipping off what excesses over the top of your eyebrow line?
Thank you!
Love, xoxo -
I have always gone the way of tweezing. It is definitely a good, inexpensive way to maintain your brows on your own.

I actually just started doing my eyebrows and my sister shaped them for me and they were fine for me. I looved them :) But then about 2 weeks later, I decided I wanted a higher arch and ended up over-plucking my left eyebrow, LOL! I'm letting it grow in but I was so upset. Don't over-pluck ladies!! I guess I learned from my mistake hahaha. Anyways, I personally prefer tweezing. My hairs grow in really fast and I do have coarse hair but waxing scares me so I'm going to try to avoid it as long as I can :) -
I definitely prefer to wax my eyebrows but it is so difficult to find the perfect place. Once you find your favorite waxer, it is the best!

I never get my eyebrows done, I just got an anastacia eyebrow kit and it's perfect! I just pluck regrowth whenever I see some which is almoster every day. It's just a routine for me now when I cleanse my skin and doesn't hurt anymore :)
