Operation Organize: Put Your Closet in Check

Mar 28, 2012 at 6:00am by Lauren Conrad

One of my New Year's resolutions is to organize my closet once a month. It's the only way I can keep my closet in check. Otherwise things get out of hand...or lost. Below I've put together a few of my best tips for getting your closet in order to kick off your spring cleaning:

Once a Month: Organize! By the end of the month the contents of my closet and dressers look like a bomb went off. It's not that I'm intentionally messy; I just forget to fold things when I'm in a rush. Plus I don't always put things back in their proper place. Needles to say, when I organize my closet once a month I find that my closet is easier to navigate. I put together better outfits because I can find (and see) everything too. I like to organize the hanging pieces by cut, color and length. As for my folded items, I group things together based on cut.

Every 6 Months: I suggest going through your entire closet every 6 months or so. Try everything on. If something is permanently stained or ripped, trash it. If you are unsure about something, ask for a second opinion. That's what friends are for! Just channel your inner Bradshaw:

Once a Year: It's time to break up with the old and make room for the new. Donate things or organize a clothing swap with friends. I realize that breaking up with pieces you've had in your closet for years can be tough. Nevertheless, it's important to remember that sentimentality should not warrant a precious piece of real estate in your closet. Another idea is to do the "switcheroo." At the begining of the year, turn all of your hangers backward (like this). As you wear items, turn the hanger back around so it's facing the right way. By the end of the year you will see which pieces you wore and what you can get rid of. Easy!

Do you have any space saving tips for your closet? If so, share your suggestions in the comments below!

XO Lauren

Im always cleaning out my closet and if items are still in good condition i sell it on an app i found called poshmark. Its a great app and cost me nothing cause the buyer buys my items and pays for shipping. Labels are then sent to me via email. And i order free boxes on USPS.com. Its a great app and if anyone is interested in selling old clothes that are still in great condition its a great way to get rid of old clothes and make a little money. Use Promo code HBXOB for a $5 credit. I hope this helps a few of you!!!! :)

Funny, today I was thinking of doing this. Here's what I really want to do given the time. Make a vision board of all the cute looks in this Spring and then clean out my closet and see what I have that works for those looks. I know I have pretty much everything I need I just can't find it because my closets a train wreck!!!! If I do the vision board, I know I will be inspired to clean out!

I am all for the once a year clean out of the closet. Since my birthday and Christmas are just two weeks apart I normally do my closet clean out during December and then donate all things that I 1. haven't worn in the past year or 2. don't fit anymore so that others can get some new clothes during the holidays that might not be able to afford them. It is a win-win!

An easy way to keep track of what you wear/don't wear is to turn your hangers around backwards in January and at the end of each season if the hanger is still backwards you know that you didn't wear it.

I have adored this blog and have been able to keep my closet clean and organized for months!!! (This is a HUGE deal for me!) I use colored stickers (usually used for garage sales) to put on the tags of my clothing. When I wear the clothing I take it off and throw it away, at the end of two months when I go through my closet if items have the sticker still attached....I obviously do not wear them and I give them away! This makes things so much easier, I used to justify clothing (maybe I could wear that...) and now if I won't wear it and don't wear it, it is out! :) My closet feels so much more like ME now!

omgosh, lauren! I TOTALLY do the switcheroo thing! I never like to repeat my outfits during the school year, so i do that so i'll remember which things i've already worn during the year, so i won't wear it again!

I always wear the same cloth that I like, so cloth that I don't wear piles and piles in the closet for a long time. Though they are attractive when I found in the shop. Why do things look less attractive after a few weeks past? No idea.

What a great post! Organizing your closet is always a much-needed task, and this serves as a great reminder and guide. I'm graduating college in a few weeks, and this is one of my biggests concerns, and now a project to tackle when I move home! Thanks, Lauren!

Definitely my favorite scene from the whole movie :)

I am pretty good about donating anything that I am not making use of, but I am also pretty messy when it comes to hanging up, folding, putting things back where they belong... etc. Once a month sounds good to me! Starting now I will do this too!

i really don't like the idea of getting rid of some stuffs but i love my closet to be organized, i do it at least once a year, but i should do it more often. Thanks for the tips. Also i categorized my closet by items, all my dress together, then trousers, skirts, etc.. so i know exactly where to look and for my t shirts i piled them by color. i also bought colour boxes, in one i put my summer shoes i know i won't need them in the city and it will only be when i travel) and in the other boxes my ballerina and in the last one my scarves all folded nicely.

      Good tips!

I try to organize my wardrobe every seasons. I have a spring-summer-autumn-winter box. I don't have enough space in my wardrobe so I put on warm jumpers (in summer), blouses and little dress for summer (in winter) etc.

Every seasons I try all my clothes and give some clothes to my friends so..I can buy new ones :)

i live in a few provinces away from my younger sisters, so when i do an annual clean-out i just box up all of the items i don't wear and send it away : ] much easier, and it leaves most of the decisions up to them!
