It’s day 3 of 2013 and like many of your fellow LaurenConrad.com members, you might have made some New Year’s resolutions. While we all have the best intentions of following through with them, it’s easy to lose sight of your goals so we put together a list of handy tricks and tips (you might even see a few of your own suggestions from last year) to help make your resolutions last all the way through December 31st…
6 Tips to Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Last
- Make measurable resolutions. Your resolutions should be easy to measure and attain. That way you can keep better track of your progress. When you make vague resolutions like, “Be fearless!” they end up being grandiose statements, which don’t do you much good.
- Write them down! Things feel more official when you put pen to paper and you will feel more committed to them once they’re written down, too.
- Review them. Keep your resolutions somewhere where you can see them on a daily basis. Lauren keeps her resolutions framed at her bedside. The reason being that it’s important to go back and reread your resolutions and consider the different ways you can achieve them. We love this trick that LC member Blair Arms shared: “I've put little post-its [notes] on my mirror as little reminders for when I get ready.” Or try this one from TT: “I wrote my resolutions on a notecard with a pretty pen. Then I put it in a cute tin box and set it on my dresser as a decoration. Every morning, whether I'm putting on jewelry or perfume, I am reminded of my resolutions!”
- Make milestones. This suggestion is from Raven West: “I write down the big goal, and then write down all the little goals that will be milestones in helping me reach the large one. Checking off the little milestones shows me that while I may not have reached the large goal yet, I have made some progress toward it.”
- Keep a journal. LaurenConrad.com member Emily Kait Hunter said, “[It’s] good idea to keep a journal (I know it's hard/weird to do) at the end of every week reflecting on what you've accomplished so there is no backsliding or tricking yourself into thinking you did something when you actually didn't. It doesn't have to be expansive or include every detail, but when you know you have to write things down there is a little extra caution, and effort during the week to accomplish or do the things you set out to do for your New Year's resolutions.”
- Make an inspiration board. If you’re a visual person, this is a great idea. LaurenConrad.com member, Jennifer Sellen, suggested this idea: “My friend has an inspiration board to keep her motivated. She has clippings of places she wants to go, clothing she wants to buy and the number of the size she needs to get in shape to fit into those clothes, and she has motivational quotes and sayings on sticky notes on her mirror closet door... so every morning when she wakes up she will see that certain quote that will motivate her to do a certain something that day. I think I am going to do the same thing and I will also post my resolutions on that board and keep a log!!!”
How are you going to stick to your 2013 resolutions?

i have to say, i'm not totally into new year's resolutions. i suppose my overarching goal is to be more positive in 2013. the way that i'm able to keep track of goals is honestly by writing it down on my blog so i can look back to see what i've accomplished. it's an online scrapbook!

Great tips!! Here are a few that help me:
-create a list of why you want it to read when your motivation is low.
-make it easy to accomplish! figure out what your obstacles are and find a way to avoid running into them, for example going to straight to the gym after work instead of going home and having to convince yourself.
-Reward your successes!

Great advice! I am personally trying to commit to my New Year's resolutions and one way that I'm trying to help myself do so is my keeping a blog about my progress. I'm training for a half marathon (hoping to be able to do a full one someday) and each day I blog about my inspiration, music I listen to during my workout, the recipes I try and the exercise I do. I'm hoping it keeps me on track. Hope this idea helps others :) Happy New Year! -
Someone once told me that instead of New Year's resolutions, he made Monday resolutions - something I'm going to adopt this year. Saying "I'll work out 3 times this week" is so much more manageable than "I'll lose 20 lbs this year"! And that way, if you don't meet your goal, you have next Monday to try again. :) -
This is such good advice! It will be hard for some of my new year's resolutions since they are measurable... for example, physical activity every day... I need to start here before I can make measurable working out or weight goals. But the best thing I've done is also writing them down and posting them on the fridge! Make a sign that says STOP and read: and then list them :) -
These are great suggestions! I bought some new LC sweaters at a medium size which fits good but a little more snug than what I want or what it should look like. So that's my motivation to loose a few pounds so I can fit and look great in those sweaters! -
these are all so helpful! my resolution is to spend less and save more, which will be tough, but with the help of mint.com and my boyfriend i think i can do it! :)
