When someone asks me what I want for the holidays (or my birthday, for that matter), I always say that it has to be something I can eat, drink, or burn. I enacted my “Eat, Drink, or Burn Rule” a few years ago after realizing that I didn’t really need any more stuff. Instead I prefer presents that I wouldn’t normally treat myself to... Whether it’s home-baked goodies, a great bottle of bubbly, or a lovely scented candle—these are the types of gifts that I truly enjoy.
Do you have any holiday gift-giving rules?
Also, have you checked out my gifting etiquette post yet? If not, it’s a quick read and I bet you’ll learn a few things :-)
XO Lauren

i thought this was such a great idea, i created a gift guide based on the rule! http://nourishandbenourished.com/2012/12/18/last-minute-gift-guide/ -
One of my gift giving rules is to give something useful... something I know they will wear/use and not regift or have laying around :) usually I give my girl friends make up, accessories :)

My parents are helping me pay for law school apps as a gift. Definitely the perfect gift for me right now.

i agree! same rules for me - practical and things i can use versus just a bunch of stuff! i hate ending up with a ton of random things that I won't use but also feel bad throwing away so they just end up sitting there... its a shame and a waste of money! -

Great rule to go by when you have anything you need... I usually make a list long before Christmas or my birthday which is on the day after New Year's Day & my loved ones usually buy me as presents things from that list...

Good rule. I really do like gift cards. They are easy and I don't have to return them if they aren't my size. But I do like to unwrap things too. I would have to agree with the baked goods or candles (cannot yet drink ;P)

Love it! I am stealing that idea for myself. This year I read a book called Paris My Sweet and have become obsessed with French Macarons. Found some places that ship on-line and I think they would make a lovely gift. :-) -
I absolutely love this rule! What a cute idea. I think gifts that are handmade like food and deserts are always sweet. I am never unhappy when someone shows up with a bottle of bubbly either.
Love it!

Wow! That rule makes perfect sense! I think most of us has too much "stuff" so I love the idea of getting something luxurious yet consumable :) well if you need a fun add-on gift to your "something to drink" The Mr. Manly Mug is cute! https://www.etsy.com/listing/117840194/mr-manly-mug-black-mustache-mug -
Wow..
I checked out your gifting etiquette post and really admire to you. I can use all of it on this occasion.

that's a good idea! i usually say it has to be something sentimental or something that i really, really, really need and would use ALL THE TIME! :) -

I really should follow a gift rule like this! But lately I've been asking for contributions to bigger things that are practical, for example my old dresser is falling apart, so asking for my parents to contribute to a dresser I already bought. It makes them feel like they are still giving something besides money, but I'm using it towards something better than clothes, jewelry or things I love but don't need anymore of or have room for!
