DIY Gift Guide: Gingerbread in a Jar

Dec 12, 2012 at 4:00am by Lauren Conrad

If you’ve spent some time on Pinterest you may already be aware of the fact that practically anything can come in jar-form these days…including thoughtful holiday gifts. Last year I blogged about a very sweet jarred idea and this year I decided to put a new spin on it: Gingerbread Cookie Mix in a Jar. Here’s the jar I made:

KyqFBjZHrYMMZ9XR7TwvPfVJ.jpeg:Amazon:photo

To make your own, follow the directions below. Once you’ve layered the ingredients into a jar, tie it off with a bow (I used bakers twine paired with a little tinsel and a cinnamon stick) and a tag with cooking instructions and voila—you have yourself a lovely holiday gift that’s perfect for family, friends, or even co-workers…

Gingerbread Cookies in a Jar

Recipe via AllRecipes.com

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together 2 cups of flour with the baking soda and baking powder.
  2. In a separate medium bowl, mix together 1 ½ cups of flour with the ginger, cloves, cinnamon, both sugars, and allspice.
  3. Layer the two mixtures (starting with the flour-baking soda + powder mixture) into a 32 ounce mason jar.
  4. Pack ingredients tightly and seal.
  5. Attach a card with the following instructions (or simply print out the card below):

And there you have it. If you have a fun “in a jar” gift idea, share it in the comments below.

Are you going to give this DIY a try?

I'm going to make a fruit infused vodka! I want to use cranberry and lime since cranberry is a wintery fruit. My fiance wants to make a chili infused vodka as well so we can sent one sweet and one spicy vodka per person. :)

Great post! I'll use this cute gift idea for those who aren't into alcohol.

As much as I love this idea, there are some math problems here. I tried to create it and the whole mix didn't fit into a 1 quart mason jar. I would probably suggest researching some other gingerbread cookie recipies and trying those amounts. also, the above recipe doesn't tell us when to add brown sugar. through trial and error, I found that in order to get the light, dark, light, dark color combination, you must mix all the ingredients (minus the brown sugar) together first and that will be your "light" color. then pour half the "light" color in the jar then half the required brown sugar amount, then repeat. (or however you want to pattern it)
Hope everyone enjoys this wonderful recipe and DIY!
