Beauty Note: Up in the Air

Jul 29, 2011 at 12:00pm by Lauren Conrad

Fasten your seat belts ladies! I have spent a lot of time traveling in the last couple months, which can really take a toll on your appearance. So, I thought I would share a few helpful beauty tips that I have picked up along the way...

  • Moisturize! I can't stress this one enough. The recycled air in the plane can really dry out your pretty skin. The night before you are headed to the airport be sure to use a good moisturizer and lots of it. Also don't forget to include a travel sized face and lip moisturizer in your carry-on luggage to use during the flight.

  • It's time to "takeoff"... your makeup! If you are like me and dread the thought of strolling though the airport bare faced, then pack some makeup removing wipes in your bag. Then, once you have boarded the plane, remove your makeup and apply a layer of moisturizer.

  • Avoid carbonation and salty foods. I know this one is a challenge considering the first things to be served on a plane are salted nuts and soda, but stay strong ladies! Instead, opt for some herbal tea or good old H2O. Also try packing your own snacks. Things like unsalted nuts or dried fruit make an excellent in-flight treat and won't leave you puffy or bloated. It is also smart to avoid alcohol (sorry!) because it is more likely to make you dehydrated.

  • Compression socks. Some of you might experience swelling in your hands and feet while flying. One way to avoid this is by wearing compression socks. They aren't the most fashionable items, but they keep your tootsies from swelling up during the flight.

  • Freshen up! Most perfume bottles exceed the limit of liquid ounces allowed through security and have to travel in our checked luggage, but no one wants to arrive at their final destination smelling like a 747. Next time you fly pack a couple of perfume samples with you. They work just as well and won't be confiscated in security.

Have more tips for for flying pretty? Share them in the comments below!

XO Lauren

I can't fly without 'flight Stick' by Duwop cosmetics. Best thing ever to freshen up your make up after a long flight. It saves me every time!

In her style book she suggests drinking plenty of water the night before. Belive me this works. I have flown several times this year and I always drink water the night before. I don't feel nearly as cranky or dehydrated anymore.

My go to accessory is a big scarf. You can use it a million different ways, as a fun-colored accent to your outfit, as a wrap to keep you warm in a pinch, as a pillow when you ball it up, or a blanket when you want to take a cat nap. You can also lay it down to have a nice clean place to sit, make a fun shirt or skirt (If you're good at that crazy scarf tying business) or wrap up an iPad or other delicated device to keep it safe. The possibilities are endless!

Great tips! I'm going to Florida in February, so it'll be a long 9 hour flight for me, so hopefully these tips will help :)

      Some tips I have:

      - Take some magazines or a good book with you, incase you get bored.

-Take one of those blow up pillows in your hand luggage incase you take a nap.

-Wear a light cardigan, its easy to take off if you're warm, but planes are usually quite cool so its nice to have that to throw over you too.

On any kind of trip, I pack those little toothe-brush-like mint-filled Colgate Wisps. I hate bothering with making sure my carry-on items are 3oz so I just tuck these in my purse! I am a youth pastor and recently took my group to an amusement park, and after a day filled with rollercoasters and greasy food, it was nice to be able to freshen up with on of these before the 2 hours drive home!

I love to travel a lot and everytime i prepare it really takes a while to get everything done so thanks for the wonderful tavel tips, will surely take note of all these important reminders you have here, this will surely come in handy when i travel again soon. I learned also that it really helps that you list all the stuff that you need and post it somewhere you will pass by befroe you go out of the room and make it a bit big so that you will tend to really read it before you go, this way you will never miss to check/bring what is written there. have a safe trip guys!

traveling to south america the 4th of August! (visiting the family)

my ears pop throughout the whole plane ride :( (and they dont just pop, they HURT)

last time, they didnt unplug until almost two days after i arrived at my destination. And gum doesnt help me. Yawning does for like two seconds. lol

so i think i might need to get earplugs, which is a pain, because

      a) NOT very attractive

      b) cannot hear a thing (including the flight attendants and important notices)

      c) cannot listen to your ipod. (and i <3 music)

So helpful LC!! Also try to keep everything into one bag so you aren't having to manage multiple bags! It's also good to wear flips flops or flats, It makes security go by faster and take a light jacket incase you get cold!smiley-wink.gif

I travel overseas every year. It usually takes 24 hours from the moment I leave my house to the time I reach my destination, including check-in, flights, and layovers. Needless to say there have been occasions where at the end of all this I look tired, dehydrated and a total hot mess. Over the years I've learned how to avoid this. I definitely agree with all of your tips Lauren. I use make-up remover wipes as well because I can't leave the house with a bare face. I also make sure that the moisturizer I use is oil-free so I don't break out. I keep my make-up essentials in my carry on so that when I get off the plane I can run to the nearest bathroom and "put on my face". Also, I always keep a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, body spray, and baby wipes in my bag as well (i use the baby wipes on my arms and chest since you can't shower on a plane). Hair can also have its moments when traveling. My go-to trick for keeping hair looking good until my destination is to wash it right before I leave the house and do a deep conditioning treatment. Then I use a good leave-in conditioner as well as a light hold styling mousse, and I don't blow-dry. I either put it in a low pony-tail, bun, or braid and let it do its thing. When I get off the plain I take it out and turn my head over massaging my scalp. Favorite travel-friendly outfit: leggings, t-shirt, lightweight cotton cardigan, and flats... I pack some jewelry in my carry-on to spruce it up when we land.

I travel all the time, because my mama happens to work for an airline! So just to clarify most perfume bottles are ok, as long as it doesn't exceed 100ml! When I travel I usually bring mascara, foundation, lip balm, moisturizer, deodorant, gum, colgate whisps! (an easy way to freshen up!), a blanket, couple recent magazines, and a good book (considering the movie selection on the plane isn't always that great) I usually like to bring some makeup etc because you never know when their going to lose your luggage!

@ Alejandra Meza its not the best idea to travel with makeup on, especially if your taking a red eye flight. It's basically like sleeping with your makeup on! And when you travel you tend to get tired easily from the change in time zones, and when your tired your hair and face usually get oily easier. So oily skin mixing with makeup calls for massive breakouts! Try to wear less makeup when travelling!
