Tuesday Ten: Overnight Beauty Tips

Tuesday Ten: Overnight Beauty Tips

Sleeping Beauty had the right idea…after all, who doesn’t want to sleep for a hundred years and wake up looking flawless? Though Aurora’s story may be a fairytale, there’s still hope for those of us living in the 21st century. Today, I’m sharing 10 overnight beauty tips that will help you wake up with soft skin, bright eyes, perfect waves and more. The best part? All of the magic happens while you slumber, giving a whole new meaning to the term “beauty sleep.”  Read on for a few of my favorite overnight beauty tips that will have you feeling like Sleeping Beauty come sunrise…

1.) Soften
For a pampering overnight treatment, apply Vaseline to the soles of your feet and put on socks before you sleep. The socks help bind the moisture to your feet and you’ll wake up to soft, smooth soles. Now all you need is a pair of strappy heels to show them off…

2.) De-puff

If you constantly wake up with puffy, swollen eyes, try this simple switch: Add an extra pillow and sleep on your back. This will allow the fluids around your eyes to drain easier and keep the puffiness to a minimum.  And of course, don’t forget your eye cream. Look for creams that list caffeine as one of the ingredients—it will help keep fluids moving.

3.) Create waves

To wake up with perfect waves, simply shower at night and style your hair before bed. Allow your strands to air dry until they’re damp, and run some light styling crème through with your fingers. Depending on your hair type and what kind of waves you prefer, you can either sleep in braids or twist your hair into buns. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Bed head has never looked so good.

4.) Moisturize

Ladies with dry skin, take note: A humidifier might just change your skin forever. Turn one on before you sleep (this works best during colder months when the air is drier) and let it work its magic. It instills the air with moisture, which in turn helps plump your skin and keep it hydrated.

5.) Prevent wrinkles
Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase can cause creases on your skin and create wrinkles. Instead, pamper yourself by investing in a silk or satin one. It will lessen the pressure on your skin and help prevent hair breakage.

6.) Whiten teeth
For an easy DIY whitening treatment, try brushing some baking soda to your pearly whites right before bed. Leave the mixture on for 5-6 minutes and make sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards. This is a perfect PM beauty treatment because in the waking hours, you would normally have to wait about 50 minutes before eating or drinking anything afterwards. Just make sure you are only doing this once a week; any more, and the acid in baking soda can wear down your tooth enamel.

7.) Brighten

It’s best to apply any face products that have brightening ingredients like retinol and vitamin C in them at night. Sunlight can actually deactivate them and prevent them from working to their fullest potential.

8.) Lengthen lashes
Give your fluttery fringe some loving with a DIY lash lengthening treatment. The secret ingredient? Castor oil. This natural oil is rich in super-hydrating omega-6 fatty acids, which help moisturize your lashes and prevent breakage. Using a clean spoolie, gently brush the castor oil through your lashes each night. In the morning, just rinse with warm water and wash your face as usual. You should notice healthier lashes in just a few weeks!

9.) Repair

Smooth a leave-in conditioner into your locks before you snooze to wake up to shiny, soft strands. Applying it in the evening gives treatment more time to penetrate into your hair cuticles for optimum moisture. (For a great natural alternative, try coconut oil.)

10.) Smooth

Nail beds looking dry? Apply cuticle cream or oil before you sleep and slip on gloves afterwards. You’ll wake up to healthy, hydrated nail beds. Now you just have to decide on the perfect polish color

How do you pamper yourself in the PM? Share with me in the comments!

Did you mean baking soda instead of baking powder? I have heard of using baking soda but didn’t know if using baking powder is a secret, new trick I didn’t know about!

  • Fit University

I put coconut oil in my hair when it’s wet before bed. It makes it smooth and shiny when I wake up!

  • s.c. rhyne

Uh, acne! A blob of toothpaste on a pimple. Its better if you wet the toothpaste a bit with your saliva, because the enzymes in your saliva will release the acne fighting chemical in the paste. Rinse in the morning.

  • Jenna Crofts

My hair is normally always sleek and straight but I will be trying the bed head wavy look!

Where can I buy a silk pillow from?

I love having a nightly regimen. It stays consistent unlike my ever changing schedule throughout the day & even my hectic mornings.

Mine consists of washing my face. Then I treat my skin with ANR (Advanced Night Repair -I swear by this product-) by Estee Lauder, then moisturize! Next I brush my teeth while doing tiptoes to work my calf’s. I then floss my teeth & rinse with mouthwash. I listen to music the whole while. My favorite part is next, STRETCH! It helps me fall asleep, I tried this after reading it in an online article & it helps me relax without a doubt.

  • Colie

Its baking soda. Ive been doing this for years and it works great!

For sure I’ll be trying most of these! I’ve been doing the baking soda tip for a few weeks now and I love it!

  • Ladyday1928

I love this post and already do most of them. They really work!!! One other thing I have done is apply just a little vitamin E oil area my eyes before bed and wear a sleeping mask after applying. Other ladies my age (21-30) have already started to see fine lines when I don’t have any. I have been doing this for 15+ years and I have seen a huge difference. Not to boost, but makeup artist have even wondered how I have such smooth skin around my eyes.

I do my normal face routine and then apply the Elizabeth Arden’s 8-Hour Cream all over my face and lips. I find it to be too shiny and thick for the day, but sleeping with it I wake up to smooth and hydrated skin. :)

Great tips thank you for sharing!

I sometimes use an intensive hand cream and then wear delicate hand gloves overnight to lock in the moisture.

  • Katelin Absher

Great tips!! I def need to purchase a humidifier! I also need an amazing eye cream for fine lines and for hydration…any recommendations? I am desperate! lol

  • agarber

I mix 1 part olive oil and 1 part castor oil (with a splash of vitamin E oil). I apply it all over my face then wet a washcloth with hot water and do a mini-steam before bed each night. The oils actually break up oil stuck in your pores and the steam helps draw out the dirt! I’ve noticed breakouts heal in half the time, are less frequent, and I had about 50% reduction in blackheads in just a couple days! Plus I wake up glowing!!

  • Allisonsmiles

Awesome tips. I have added humidifier, castor oil & baking soda to my list. You are right the coconut oil does incredible things for moisture. My hair smells great, looks healthy and not greasy (major component)! Happy Keep it Girly Day! xo

  • nancy li

baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is not acidic. after ionizing, bicarbonate is actually amphoteric: it can act as an acid or a base (which is why bicarbonate is a buffer in your blood). In water, it is considered basic, not acidic.

  • melgs

Great tips! I’m definitely going to try these. I also have a few PM beauty secrets:
I love doing a baking soda toner. I started this summer, and my skin has looked SO much better ever since. Basically I mix a tiny amount of baking soda and a similar amount of water to make a paste (adding in small increments to get the ratio I want), then I put it on my face like a face scrub, wait a minute or so, and rinse it off.
The other thing I love to do is a bedtime exfoliation. I mix brown sugar and olive oil together to get a nice scrub that is not too grainy, but not too runny, then at the end of my shower, I turn off the water, use the scrub on any rough spots (for me, it’s my knees, my elbows, the backs of my arms, and my heels), and rinse off. It’s super convenient because the ingredients are cheap (and most people have them anyway), and I’m already in the shower, so rinsing off isn’t some extra ordeal.

  • Emily

cocoa butter body lotion is also good to leave on overnight

  • jennaxo

Great tips! I always apply Vaseline to the soles of my feet before bed. I also apply a Vaseline blistex to my lips overnight, especially in the winter months to avoid chapped lips.

  • Agata Kalinowska

I recently started to apply castor oil or coconut oil under my eyes and i usually slather my hair with coconut oil and go to sleep. I also do the thing with foot mask and socks :)

  • Jade Wright

Ooo definitely trying the vaseline tip! Thanks!! :)

  • Chelsea Penning

I love how simple all of these are, I will definitely be trying a few!

  • Jackie kanis

I also use Vaseline and socks on my feet at night. It is the only thing that really works for me! I also slather Egyptian Magic on my hands, elbows and any dry spots on my face.

  • Enid

WOW, I will never use a cotton pillow case again!! I usually shower before bed and use an anti-frizz serum on my hair, then air dry a little so I don’t wake up looking like a frizz ball!

  • oceangirl25

Thank you for these tips! I used them last night, and they worked really well! :-)

  • Tea Jae

For sure that castor oil trick works wonders on lashes. Mine even stopped falling out. Just make sure you are using a hexane free castor oil it will say it on the bottle somewhere, look for it. Some brands place the castor bean pods in hexane which is basically like gasoline to extract the max amount of oil, that makes it toxic. I never heard of a spoolie before I have to get one or a few of them now. Vaseline and sock tried and true, its funny how we forget the simple things sometimes. Great post LC

  • melsey

for plump full lips, apply a tiny dab of Vaseline, work it into the cracks on your lips and then sleep. the next day your lips will look full, and your lipstick or gloss will glide over your lips.

  • tee_cupcakes

I care a lot about my hair, lips, teeth and of course face. In the night I follow these four easy step,

    1) Wash face with favorite cleanser (Clean and Clear) cold water is a must.
2 Brush my teeth with (Crest 3D White, floss & rinse)
    3) Brush my long locks with a soft brush
    4) Gloss my lips with (Blistex silk and shine)

I wake up feeling happy & beautiful, so with these new tips I am hoping to feel happy & beautiful x2.

    Tee. <3

  • Jules

I scrub my face with a micro-fiber, antibacterial cloth. It’s a great alternative to face wash because it doesn’t strip your face of all the healthy oils, it gets rid of dead skin cells, and it doesn’t run out! Apply very light lotion and your face will feel like baby skin in the morning! And, I tie my hair up in a loose bun all the time for perfect waves.

  • priscilla

    Awesome tips! :)

  • Mallory colley

I use a mix of castor oil on my eyelashes and eyebrows to help with growth. A must have is rosebud cream for my hands and lips!

  • Courtney

Such a great tip!! I tried this last nigh, I noticed my blackheads appeared smaller, my huge pimple was pretty much gone and my skin was glowing this morning. Thanks so much :)

Awesome tips! I’m a big fan of applying various hair oils and hair treatments to my hair to leave in overnight. You have to be careful, tho, as some of them can clog your pores if you use too much, and you run the risk of staining your pillow. http://tinyurl.com/teatreeoilforhair

I agree with nancy li – baking soda isn’t acidic, this is a myth (actually, it’s basic) so won’t dissolve your teeth. It is abrasive so may wear the teeth if you brush too hard with it on a regular basis. It will neutralise acids so is sometimes recommended by dentists as a rinse e.g. after vomiting or exposure of the teeth to very acidic foods. source: dental student!

Hey, I had this acne, weak hair and nails problem and tried so many things. Different things work for different people and I was lucky enough to find one that worked for me. I lost all of that in a month and I’m still using it to take care of my skin and it’s been a life changer. I’m a little embarrased to post my before and after photos here but if anyone actually cares to hear what I’ve been doing then I’d be happy to help in any way. Just shoot me an email at [email protected] and I’ll show you my before and after photos, and tell you about how things are going for me with the stuff I’ve tried and still using it to improve my skin. I wish someone would have helped me out when I was struggling to find a solution so if I can help you then it would make my day.

One suggestion about the Vaseline on the feet–use cotton or other natural fiber socks, not polyester socks (like those really soft fleece socks might be polyester). Vaseline is a petroleum product, and so is polyester. The Vaseline might start breaking down the polyester against your skin, get other chemical reactions in it, and not do your skin much good. If you use cotton, the Vaseline will stay fairly pure against your skin and absorb more easily into your skin to soften it. A better bet? Non-petroleum vaseline–look for it in organic stores, on the web or on Amazon. It’s not petroleum based and better for your body/skin and the Earth.
