Wake Up: Are Apples Better Than Coffee?

Wake Up: Are Apples Better Than Coffee?
While an apple a day might keep the doctor away, it may be the perfect substitute for your morning java too! A while back one of our very own went cold turkey on her morning coffee routine. While we have to admit that she was a total grouch the first few days, we were surprised to learn how she replaced her go-go juice: Apples!

In addition to drinking a glass of hot lemon water in the morning, our dear girl began eating a sliced up apple with breakfast. And believe it or not, she felt as awake and energized as she did post-coffee. What!?

We looked into the matter and sure enough, it’s been said that the fructose (a natural sugar) in apples can provide an energy boost equivalent to that of coffee. Crazy, right? Additionally, apples have carbs, which are used to fuel the body and due to their high fiber content, the body absorbs the sugar slowly, thus providing your bod with a steady stream of energy (sans sugar coma) as opposed to a sudden jolt of java. (To read more about this topic, check out the sources list at the very bottom of this post!)

Even if you can’t forgo your morning latte, it’s never a bad idea to include an apple in your daily diet routine. There’s a reason that old “apple a day” saying is around—apples are just plain good for you!

If you’re looking to give up coffee this year, we highly recommend giving our apple-a-day trick a try. While you won’t feel that instant coffee buzz, you will be energized and properly fueled to kick start your day on a healthy note.

Personally, I usually have a big cup of green tea in the mornings along with an apple. It always gets me going!

How do you get energized in the morning?

Share your tricks and we’ll round up the best suggestions in a follow up post!

I have lemon water, followed by fresh fruit and greens in the morning. I haven’t needed coffee in years.

Yes!!! I also gave up coffee a month ago at the suggestion of my migraine doctor. As a substitute I drink matcha tea and eat an apple with some peanut butter. Does the trick! The protein keeps me full until lunch so there’s no snacking. The matcha (green tea) gives me a little boost as well. Cheers to good health!

I just bought some apples last night so this is great! I don’t really drink coffee so this is easy for me lol. If I’m having trouble waking up, I like to drink the Special K shakes for breakfast. Usually just the shake does it for me but if you need something more solid, any kind of fruit goes good with the shake.

I love apples and have being eating one almost everyday this year :)

Apples and sugar free peanut butter are my mid morning snack, perfect blend of carbs and protein, and way less sugar and fat than cookies and creamy lattes!

This is great news! I don’t really drink coffee (Starbucks iced coffee once in a while but not very often) but I had been thinking about starting to drink it more on a regular basis because I need the energy in the mornings here lately, but I love apples!!! So now that I know this I will just stay away from the coffee! My New Years resolution (like so many other people’s I’m sure) is to get more fit & eat healthier so this is great!

I love to start my day with a filling and healthy smoothie. The base is always fat free Greek Yogurt, maybe a teaspoon of olive oil or a quarter of an avocado for a healthy fat, and a handful of baby spinach. Depending on the season I have fun from there adding frozen strawberries, mixed berries, grapes, bananas, apples, cherries, pomegranate whatever I could try. I’ve even experimented with shredded carrots, kale, sweet potato, and squash. Whatever is healthy and full of fiber should work well since the berries overpower any veggie flavor with sweet fruit flavors. I haven’t had a cup of coffee in years and depending on the size of the smoothie it staves off hunger until lunch time.

  • Rachel Trampel

This sounds like a great idea! I love coffee and can even drink it into the afternoon… yikes trying to break that habit, but I haven’t had a cup in a few days since I’ve been sick!

I wash my face and I have toast and that’s it. I should try eating an apple every morning

I love Green Monster smoothies, they’re low calorie, super filling and full of protein and fiber! They also give me tons of energy which is a definite bonus. I make mine with

    1 frozen sliced banana
    1 Tablespoon peanut butter
    1/2 cup Vanilla Greek yogurt
1 cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
    4 cups baby spinach

Sometimes I’ll even add a little protein powder if I drink it post-workout

  • Amanda Kretchmer

While I do have a small teacup of coffee in the morning to fight the hazy feeling, I always eat an apple half way through my day to give me an energy boost. Plus, I feel really good that i’m eating healthy. Win Win in my book!

I do “”morning yoga”” every second day and drink green tea. I dont really like coffee in the morning, it doesn’t wake me up and on my opinion coffee isn’t healthy. I eat every day on apple :) #BEHEALTHY xo

You can also substitute your coffee with tea, such as Yerba Mate and organic green tea.

I’m loving your painted pink apple! I used to grab a (few) cups of coffee a day. I gave up coffee and replaced it with green tea. Drinking chocolate shakeology totally gets me motivated to work out (because it’s that Delicious!) but I’ll absolutely be adding fruit back into the daily deal. I replaced my fruits for all veggies but then my body did NOT agree with that decision!

  • DR.ALHIALY

Dear alex: i’m a strong supporter for u and lauren but as medicine college student i should pause right here!..
1-if u wanted to replace apples with sugar in ur coffe or tea “”including green tea”” then i’m 100% with u! Note””having them both is kinda over calories””.
2-cafaein has a diffrent function from sugar and it does not exist in fruit.. Two types in cafaien: one in coffee and one in tea””including the green one”” and it’s the “”tanic acid”” , so! Replasing coffee with tea every other month will give maximum effect of cafaien!.
3-fruit has potasium “”not in coffee or tea”” and is considered as heart sensitizer! “”this is why u may feel wake up after 1 apple!””.
4-finaly my advice to u at morning is to have:1 apple +cup of tea””with littil or no sugar+ most important slice of white cheese””fat free!”” as a source of protein!.
    lol.. Dr.Alhialy

I like coffee just for the cultural/ritual reason. It honestly doesn’t wake me up at this point. I just love starting my day preparing a cup, and the flavor can’t be replaced with apples. This is a good idea if you do use coffee only to wake you up, though.

  • Heidi Tuominen

I love apples; especially with unflavored yogurt, frozen berrie and cinnamon. It’s so good! I want you guys to try it too!

I have been on this apple craze about a month now to where I just crave apples. Even if I go over to a friends house I ask if they have any apples in the house so I can munch on them and I am always hungry. So learning that apples are better for you then you thought makes me happy to know that it will help me out in the mornings. I am not a coffee fan and never have been but I love fruit. I normally eat an apple at night or on lunch, I will eat 4 slices and save the other 4 for work if I get hungry. My sister-in-law, she is just 15 but she will eat an apple before bed too as a late night snack. So she will be pleased to hear about this since she has always loved apples. :)

I’ve never heard this before! I’m addicted to coffee, so maybe I should cut back and give this a try.

I am totally going to try this! I am a coffee drinker and I try not to drink it when I feel like I don’t need it in the morning but to help keep us on the apple trick, Trader Joe’s sells a bag of fresh sliced apples!!! It’s really good and all you do is take it out of your fridge and pick out however many slices you want! Lasts for at least 3-4 days but it’ll give you more incentive to eat the apples if you know it won’t last long :)

  • Kelly Burt

If I have the time, I like to do a brief work-out in the morning. This always gets me going. Also, I like to drink lemon water too and I also heard of drinking cucumber water as well. By adding slices of cucumber to your water, you are consuming lots of nutrients and antioxidants.

  • Lyn

Ive cut back from 4 – 5 coffees a day to now one or two at most. I cant give up my coffee, but I do have my green juice every morning which includes a delicious apple :-)

Where’s your favorite place to get basic t-shirts? My favorite used to be forever 21 but they lose their shape and shade so quickly you have to buy a new one every few wears. I LOVE everlane’s tees and have been ordering them ever since Lo Bosworth tweeted about them last winter. They’re sustain their color and are relatively cheap ($15) compared to constantly repurchasing F21 ones.

Have you found good tees and from where?!

I love love love apples, but love them enough to give up my coffee? I don’t know about that! Maybe I could try starting 2-3 days a week with green tea and an apple instead of coffee. But will definitely need that green tea!!

I agree with Lena Ameri. Not sure if i could give up my coffee. Coffee to me is like a fashion statement and a movement…you feel good just holding and sipping that cup of hot juicy caffeine. Kinda the same feeling you get when you hold that amazing martini in a classic Martini glass. LOL:)

Coffee has many health benefits as well, as long as you are drinking it without all the added sugars and creams! I switch between coffee and tea in the mornings and I have an apple in the afternoon to give me the jolt I need to finish the day!
