How to Wear: Head-to-Toe Denim

How to Wear: Head-to-Toe Denim

If you uttered the term “Canadian Tuxedo” to any fashion editor just a decade ago, I guarantee the reaction would have been rolled eyes and skeptical raised eyebrows. However, as with all things in fashion, this once fabled faux pas has evolved into a chic sartorial trend. (Fashion is always recycling itself!) I love the look of a head-to-toe denim ensemble. It can range anywhere from classic and all-American to edgy and eclectic. Personally, I’m a fan of pairing my basic blue jeans with a button up chambray shirt. The fun part is that the options are nearly endless when creating an all-denim outfit.

To get you in gear to give this look a try, I’ve come up with a couple style tips that will have you mixing and matching denim and chambray like a professional in no time:

How to Wear: Head-to-Toe Denim

  1. Two-toned. One of the most important things to know about wearing denim head-to-toe is that your shades of blue don’t have to match. In fact, I think it keeps the look more interesting when lighter denim is paired with a darker wash. Throw on a pair of lighter boyfriend jeans, a basic tee, and a dark denim jacket for a two-toned look that will actually appear fashionably put together.
  2. Sugar and spice. Similar to trying a two-toned denim look, mixing distressed pieces with cleaner cuts is another way to rock the trend. Combine your go-to skinnies with a distressed chambray shirt (buttoned all the way up and tucked in) for a cool spin on this classic look. I would even add a preppy pea coat, a brown leather belt and riding boots to make it autumn-appropriate—oh and a sparkly bauble too, of course.
  3. Element of surprise. Don’t limit your style by thinking that denim pieces can only come in the form of basic tops and bottoms. Fall fashion forecasts have shown everything from knee-length blue jean pencil skirts to denim designer handbags. Make the most of the trend this season by layering a collared chambray shirt under a plaid sweater or throwing a denim vest over a sweater dress.

I’m especially excited to wear head-to-toe denim this fall because the it easily lends itself to layering. Plus it’s one of my favorite mindless outfits to throw on for a casual day at work or over the weekend. Take my word for it: You’ll be wearing your own Canadian Tuxedo round the clock in no time.

What do you think about all-over denim? Are you ready to give it a go?

I’d love to see how you style your head-to-toe denim look. Upload your outfit photos to your LaurenConrad.com profiles and I’ll feature some of my favorite looks in a Member Spotlight post!

Happy styling ladies!

XO Lauren

One of my biggest fashion fears. I feel like an obvious material like denim layered wih itself can to be agressive. It’s maazing to see how good it can look together. P.s. I need to find those Zara sandals!!

I agree with Amy, I’m not a big fan of it (Can’t help feel like a bad 80′s music video) but I do like it on other people! Other than jeans, a denim jacket and button down are essential for fall! (maybe not together though!)

I love that post!!! My casual outfit is mostly denim based.

In summer, I loved wearing this dress with gladiators, but in fall I’ll combine it with denim flats, top with long sleeves underneath the dress and leather jacket or denim jacket if warm enough.

Never really been a fan of this at all. I’ve also heard it referred to as the ‘Texas Tuxedo’ or the ‘Leno Look.’ I personally would rather have a little variety in my outfit, and not just in two tone denim.

  • OrangeZest23

My new love is my Ex-Boyfriend Chambray Shirt from Madewell! I pair that with everything from regular denim, to colored denim, I even wore it over a denim dress! Before you know it’s I’ll be singing “”Oh Canada!”” instead of the Star Spangled Banner! (haha, jk)

  • Rebecca Whitson

The only place denim should be worn is below the waist. In South Carolina, denim jackets and tops look redneck and outdated.

  • Rachel Moltz

I LOVE denim. My denim shirt paired with a black pair of shorts/pants and my denim jacket with just about anything in the world….but I don’t think I’m fashionable enough to pull off denim on denim. It looks great on the beautiful models you posted, but I would legit feel like a nerd all day if I tried it. Stick to what you’re comfortable in! But thanks for the ideas :)

I am so going to try this, and I have been truly skeptical because I used to tell a friend that often wore the infamous “”Canadian Tuxedo”” they were out of their mind! Denim on denim, oh no! And now, I am so loving the trend, lesson learned.

    Hi Lauren,
I was interested to know some suggestion from you on how to wear my SHORT SLEEVE KNITTED CARDIGAN (colour grey) with a fur collar (also greyish) attached in casual wear.
I was interested to know some style examples from your fashion ideas and also if that can be used also in formal dressing for work.

I haven’t been brave enough to try double denim yet! Until a year or so ago whenever anyone said double denim I immediately thought of a 50-something overweight man with a moustache wearing his old jeans, an old denim jacket (both the same tone) and sneakers. Thank god for fashion blogs and that people have started doing it properly – thanks for the tips!
