Ask Lauren: How Do I Break Into the Fashion Industry?

Ask Lauren: How Do I Break Into the Fashion Industry?

I hope everyone enjoyed my last Ask Lauren post! Today I will be answering a question that many of you have messaged me about: Breaking into the fashion industry. Here’s the question:

Hi Lauren, I am currently taking a journalism class and I love all things fashion and beauty. I even have my own YouTube channel dedicated to it and a blog too. I really want to work in the fashion industry—maybe editorial or design. Do you have any tips for me?

Great question! It sounds like you are already well on your way to having a great career. Judging by your current experience I am assuming you would want to work for a fashion magazine or website. My suggestion would be to start circulating your resume and keep working on your blog and YouTube channel. You should also try and start an internship sooner rather than later. Having a few internships under your belt before making any major career decisions is crucial. I cannot stress that enough. I learned so much from my internships and they were key in getting me to where I am now. At the end of the day, it is about gaining hands on experience, which will make you more appealing to potential employers. Plus, it will be beneficial since it will help you decide what you do and do not like. There are a few ways to go about applying for an internship. Here are a few of the most popular avenues to try:

  1. Online internship boards. Websites including MediaBistro.com, Ed2010.com and FashionCareers.com are all great resources for finding an internship or entry-level job. Popular fashion and beauty sites often post internship listings as well, check out Fashionista.com for example.
  2. Networking. Ask around and use your contacts to help you. If you are in school, head to your consolers office and see if they can help you make a connection.
  3. Straight to the source. Send your resume straight to the Human Resources department. If there is nothing available, follow up in a couple weeks or let them know that you would appreciate it if they kept you in mind once something opens up.

I hope you found this helpful!

If you have any tips for securing an internship in the fashion or beauty industry, share them below
XO Lauren

linkedin is a great way to gain connections and look for internships/jobs! i recently starting using it myself. my personal preference is to go onto the company’s website and look under the career section, when they have one. that’s how i landed my internship at ideeli this past summer (:

Work a trade show like Coterie or Magic for a label that you like. It’s an easy way to get involved with selling the line and then it’s easier to find a more permanent position within the industry.

Great avice! As a recent college grad from a fashion program, internships are the most important resume booster! I actually got hired after graduation at the company I interned for! Best of luck to all you aspiring fashionistas!

These are really all really great tips! I have actually recently launched an online store and have noticed that networking and social media has helped greatly. I also write a blog and share the items featured in the store styled in a way I would wear them.

Not only in the fashion industry but in any career, networking always seems to be key in being successful!!

Hey I have a question, I started my senior year at a new school (high school) And I know two people, but my last intentions was to become a third wheel, They obviously have a thing, they are not dating but they might as well be, I walk away to get lunch come back and they’re holding each other. And I feel i’m interupting, I’m having a hard time making friends which is odd, cause’ I’m not a shy person. I guess I’m just missing being with my friends, but I just need advice I guess to help me get out of this awkward state im in. HELP

internships internships internships! i cannot stress this enough, especially in the fashion/entertainment/lifestyle realm.

if you’re looking to break into the fashion world, definitely go to freefashioninternships.com and surf the crap out of it. there are so many wonderful internships in so many realms of fashion.

also, know that interning isn’t easy. it’s a lot of hard work, but you’re constantly learning. it looks stellar on a resume and shows future employers in the industry that you know a. how to handle the industry, b. have contacts. i’ve interned in p.r. and cannot stress enough how having connections helps you in the long run. always keep in touch and up to date with the companies you worked for! you never know when they’ll be looking for a new hire.

    GOOD LUCK Y’ALL.

hey lauren, can i first say how much i love you!!! youre my absolute idol, i aspire everyday to be just like you. i love the hills, and laguna and i love all of your books, and cant wait for your two new ones to come out!

my question is, for a high school senior, how does one decide where to go after highschool? Which college to go to, or university or just start working right away?

how did you decide where to go after highschool? Also, why did you leave the art school in san fransisco? Also, what degree did you graduate with from FIDM

    thats all for now,

    shelby. (:

Lauren i need your help, its my boyfriend’s brother wedding and im freaking out on what to wear we’re very serious and im gonna be meeting the whole family and friends what kind of dress you suggest i’d wear?

  • Fauzy Aarts

my advice Dont give up and go for it!!

I also wanted to go into the fashino industry.

And while everybody told me it will never happen, and i had to give up, i kept on trying.

i just go in stores give my cv and after 2 years, i got a job!

and im the second leader of the store, wich is more than i thought would happen.

So go out and search untill the right store comes along!!!

    Good Luck!

My daughter is 5 and she is in LOVE with fashion. Yes, she gets this from me, as I do love clothes and shoes and bags, but I inherited a 1971 Singer Sewing Machine I want to put to good use. I know all kids are different, but what age did you begin sewing things, and what did you begin with as far as patterns are concerned? I know she will eventually enjoy making her own projects and clothes to wear. I think once she sees me making my own skirts and dresses, she will want to do the same, but I am not sure what to start her on, and since we have little disposable income, I will be teaching her and myself. Any ideas on books to get for us, and really anything is welcome! Thank you!!

    Hey Lauren!
First of all, I just need to tell you how much of an inspiration you are to me. I know you get that all the time, but you are truly my role model. You’ve conquered the reality-tv world, the fashion world, launched your own line AND managed to do it all with complete grace and class. I have so much respect for you. Anyways, I just wanted to ask you for tips on how to get my fashion blog “”out there”” and what makes a good fashion blog. I recently created one – http://dry-cleanonly.com and I’m really hoping to get it noticed.

Thanks so much and I can’t tell you how much I’d appreciate it if you’d check out my blog.

What I would like to know is that while I’ve worked so hard in the field of Fashion, in Finland, does this matter if I’d like to pursue even an internship in the United States for example?
I’m almost done with my bachelor’s degree and have lots of work experience and I’ve done interning and volunteering also and made important contacts in Finnish Fashion business, but breaking into somewhere else than Scandinavia seems so hard. Sigh….

Think about the time and day you apply :) Applying over the weekend is probably a bad idea as by Monday they may have so many emails that yours may slip their view! I’ve found mid week is a good time to apply.

Blogging is an amazing platform to showcase your skills

Over in England, a fab website for internships is fashionunited.com :)

Hey lauren, how old do you think is too old to brake into the fashion industry? x

  • Alex Nelson

Wow! I needed something like this. I am currently going to school for fashion but am struggling to find internships because of where I live. I live in Wyoming right now but would LOVE to do my internship in somewhere where fashion is a big thing. I would love to make connections with anyone!

Also, I have my own fashion blog http://www.awildflowerlife.blogspot.com check it out!

This is exactly what I wanted! Thanks for doing a post on this. I recently made a fashion blog and I would appreciate it if you would look at it. http://wanderlustwildflower.blogspot.com/?m=1

    Good Morning

My name is Thomas and I work for a beautiful fashion label name of ‘appelle’ they make and design their own dresses and bags.
We are a business that has started from the bottom and is working hard to keep growing, I would love to know how I would go about getting some of our products advertised with fashion guru’s as reputable and vast as you.
Any help, advice or thoughts would be incredibly appreciated!
I wouldn’t mind sending some items so that the quality could be looked at and tested.

    Kindest Regards
    Thomas Mather
