What To Wear: Weekend Getaway

With summer so close you could kiss it, a slew of weekend getaways are on the horizon and packing wisely for them is a must. Whether you’re preparing for a girls’ weekend away or visiting out-of-state family and friends, there are a few key pieces that should always hold a place in your suitcase. Narrowing down my wardrobe to its fash bones is an art I perfected during college when my hubby and I would meet halfway between our colleges every few weeks in our favorite little beach town. No matter what the weekend’s plans were, one piece you’d never find my suitcase without is a colorful maxi. These breezy summer dresses are not only super space savers, but can easily transition from day to night by simply adding a bright clutch or fabulous shoe. These fash repeat pieces, as I like to call them, are crazy crucial when it comes to packing light.

Once I have a stand out maxi selected, I always choose a color palette for the rest of my pieces. Whether it’s my go-to neutrals or a trendy pastel palette, when you pack similar shades, it makes mixing and matching a thoughtless process. Forget something? Fear not, because you can easily pair your key pieces to create the perfect go anywhere ensemble even if you did forget you favorite pair of bright colored skinnies.

Casual Essentials

1. Cardigan
2. Skinny Jeans
3. Wedges

No matter where your travels may take you, a pair of skinny jeans is always a good idea. Any item that can be dressed up or down by a simple change in footwear is always a standout when you’re trying to slim down your packing list. During summer I always make sure to bring a pair of wedges and a comfortable cardigan. Predicting the weather isn’t a skill most of us possess, and as a girl who is notoriously cold everywhere I go, this light layover is insanely important. Try stowing it in your tote for those unexpected degree dips.

Play Dress Up

1. Dress
2. Pumps
3. Romper

Nighttime attire is crucial when it comes to weekend getaways; whether you’re playing dress up for a dinner date or drinks with girlfriends, the perfect pair of heels that you can also pair with your skinny jeans is a must. Remember to pack them in the center of your bag, (heels facing in) so they’re protected on both sides. I always suggest bringing at least one dress. Whenever I visit my family a single outing to the mall suddenly becomes lunch with extended family, followed by coffee with cousins, and then dinner with old friends, so a cute dress like this floral one will have you looking stylish no matter what comes your way. For a comfy causal look, pair your dress with the cardi and wedges for another fash repeat. Same rules apply for a fashionably feminine playsuit, which should never be absent from a girl’s suitcase during the months of June and July. Rock your favorite romper poolside as a swimsuit cover up or you can also dress it up with heels and a scarf for a chic daytime ensemble.

Time To Accessorize

1. Bracelet
2. Scarf
3. Ring Set

I bring a ridiculous amount of costume jewelry with me on every trip, so to keep things slightly organized I always have a dedicated zip lock bag for my rings, earrings, and so on. To keep them safe, I add cotton strips to each bag for a nice layer of padding. Avoid cotton balls, they tend to cling. Three pieces I always make sure to include are an oversized bangle that could work with at least two of my outfits, a cocktail ring in gold or silver that can mix with everything, and a light scarf for function, that can also add a dash of fash to my basics.

Now that you’re ready to pack, don’t forget to roll your clothes when filling your suitcase for the maximum amount of room. A girl should always have a little extra space in her suitcase for impromptu shopping sprees.

What is your must-pack piece for a weekend getaway?

Oh I love this post! Thanks so much :)

I travel a lot all around the world, usually with hiking backpacks (not so stylish, I know!) rather than suitcases… But nonetheless, some of your tips are priceless! :)

  • Dani English

LOVE your maxi dress and your style! Thanks for the packing help and right in time for Memorial Day Weekend!

    Hey Anna

I completely agree with your advice, especially when it comes to travelling. With all the extra charges for luggage and carryons these days, I think findings ways to pare down your load without comprising fashion is the best way to go. Being creative by using one piece in different ways, like for instance using a scarf as a top, bottom, or a coverup instantly scores you three distinct looks. Or by wearing a sweater, a blouse, or a tee, over a maxi dress, you can immediately achieve so many fresh stylish looks. The combinations can be endless when you think outside the box. Besides, you’ll save yourself a ton of money on airline fees in the process:)

Great advice!!!!! And just in time for heading home to Iowa this weekend. I am actually already packed, but only because my little sister is graduating so I already had my dress picked out and then I just had to plan for Saturday and my trip home Sunday!

I am also in the midst of packing for a two week trip to Europe where I will only be bringing a tote and carry-on! I have done it before, but packing light and making sure to have versatile pieces is key! I am actually packing two of my favorite maxis with pattern and color for the trip! I will be doing packing tips for a trip like this on my blog next week!

Always remembering the following list for a quick get-away or a business trip helps tremendously. Not only is it easy to layer, but also to avoid those nasty baggage fees!

    1 dress

    2 tops

    2 bottoms (skirt/pants)

    1 blazer

    1 cardigan

2 pairs of nice shoes (biz shoes)

    1 more item

I really love maxi dresses, but The Boyfriend doesn’t. I’m trying to convince him, so I’m looking for the perfect one, that would be flattering on my body. Should I go for one with a print, or just one color?

Secondly, Love the packing ideas! I definitely need help in this department because I do not at all pack simply. Skinny jeans and cardigans are definitely both essentials though, especially if you are perpetually cold like myself, or if the weather might flip-flop like it does so often in the midwest!

love this! Perfect timing! I’m going to invest in a weekend maxi wear dress!

  • lisa cram

with all due respect lexie, I have to disagree with you. I live in Santa Barbara and tend to wear jeans and cardigans often. Although it is mostly sunny here year round, the central coast does get chilly. So, no… they are not strictly for winter time. Also, I’m a mother of 2, not a member of a country club and love the convenience of maxi dresses during the spring and summer. Especially comfortable ones! :)

  • Michelle LaPorte

Most definitely my go to dress! I love being comfortable and dresses are perfect especially when it’s hot out!!
