It’s time for teachers, time for books and time to start the school year off on a fashionable foot!

While it’s sad to leave those lazy summer days behind in your rearview, there’s something exciting about the end of summer… The leaves begin to brown, the air becomes crisp, and the sounds of school bells serenade the late-summer air: It’s back to school season!

On today’s lesson plan, I’ll be reviewing the 10 back to school basics you need to refresh your closet for the new school year.

If your school days are over like mine, these basics are still great pieces to have in your closet (just swap out the book bag for a nice tote).

Here we go…

  1. Jacket. Be sure to get a jacket that is versatile and easy to layer over other pieces. Think simple and solid. I recommend a investing in a neutral colored jacket, such as a steel gray or black, so you can wear it with a wide variety of colors and prints. If you’re in a more temperate climate, blazers (like this one from Urban Outfitters) are great for school!
  2. Jeans. It’s always a good idea to start the year off with a fresh pair of jeans. I used to get a pair of light and a pair of dark jeans to last me through the school year. White jeans are also a good idea… I just did a pair of white denim pants for my LC Lauren Conrad line for Kohl’s. Click here to check them out. If jeans aren’t your thing, opt for leggings instead.
  3. Shorts. Don’t fall into a rut and wear jeans every day. Mix it up by sporting some shorts. Wear them in the fall with tights and when the weather warms up let your gams go bare. The shorts featured in the collage I made (above) are the Pleated Linen Shorts I designed for my LC Lauren Conrad line. Between you and me, I am kind of obsessed with them… and they’re on sale for $26.40 too!
  4. Cardigan. They may be basic, but cardigans are as versatile as they are chic. A beautiful cardigan can be worn year-round–layer it under a coat or wear it over anything (colors and fabric permitting, of course)! The Pointelle Cardigan from my LC Lauren Conrad line (pictured above) is great option.
  5. Book Bag. I think it’s nice to start the year off with a new book bag (or backpack). This ASOS bag is sleek, stylish and very cute. I like this oversized version as well.
  6. Simple Tee. A lightweight tee is the perfect base any ensemble. Since they wear out over time, try to replenish your stock of simple shirts each fall. I like this Bird Tee from my LC Lauren Conrad line… the color is fresh and the print is understated yet fun.
  7. Tank. Pick up a few simple tanks in solid colors as well as stripes or floral prints. I particularly love the Floral Ruffle Tank I designed for Kohl’s (and it looks gorgeous paired with the Pointelle Cardigan).
  8. Neutral Scarf. Classrooms get chilly. Be prepared with a scarf so you can throw it over yourself when temperatures dip.
  9. Simple Flats. In my opinion, wearing heels to school is a little tacky. After all, we’re talk about school ladies, not clubbing. Get a pair (or two) of smart flats. Laceless oxfords are very popular this season and are perfectly appropriate for school. Otherwise, go with a pair of ever-chic ballerina flats.
  10. Lacey Mini. If you had to pick one trendy item this season, I suggest getting a texturized mini skirt. Whether it’s lace or eyelet–a fun mini is a great way to balance out the harsh lines and stark colors of fall fashions.

What’s on your back to school shopping list?

Are you a working girl? Let me know if you would like me to do a post about work wear in the comments.

Class dismissed!

XO Lauren

P.S. If you wear uniforms at your school, check out chapter 9 of my book, Style, for some uniform-friendly styling tips.

    Hi Lauren,

I just started my job in May. I went out and bought a ton of dressy clothes… and then when I got into work it was business casual.. and when they said casual they meant casual!! I want to still look like business wear, but be casual at the same time! Please do a post about this!!!

  • Lupsie

Is it terrible that I just bought all of the suggested items? Can’t wait for my package(s) to come! I work in an elementary school so these pieces are great and definitely comfortable whilst sitting in an office all day! They’re great for a relaxing weekend too!

  • francesca guralnick

    work wear please!

  • Vanessa Turkel

Love this List, I have most of those items, guess I did it right so far :)

I’m also an aspiring teacher and sometimes I wonder what might be appropriate for a classroom because I don’t want to seem too relax and don’t want to overdo either!

  • Brittany Gosney

i love all of these! and would live to see a work wear post!

  • Ludovica Colourfulvanity

Yes!!! I study at university and work at the same time! I’d love to read a “”fashion tips for work”” post by you…

    One big kiss from Italy

  • Lindsay Cook

I’m starting my last semester of college tomorrow, and I’m studying marketing. Cleaned out my closet and realized I need way more “”grown up clothes”” for when I graduate and get a “”big girl job””. A blazer is definitely at the top of my list!! So are some oxford flats!

  • Lindsay Scotland

Work post would be good.. I like to see what I can wear from the US. that people don’t have over here in Scoltand :)

  • Laurenda Dosenberry

Great tips! Also looking forward to the work wear post! :)

  • Corryn Batykefer

I llllooove the skirt.. not so much a fan of everything else. Too neutral for me. You should do a post for the more colorful people :)

  • Kathleen Hunt

I love the idea of wearing a scarf, but I have no idea how to sport one! Any tips? :)

  • Fernanda Torrenegra Safar

I’m a Publicist and photographer with 23 years old, I have 3 years looking for a stable job in a country that until now dont want to believe in me. WHAT TO WEAR in that case?

  • Kendra Oatis

i’m doing a social work internship this semester on top of school, so this post was handy but a work wear post would also be great! i have no clue what to wear. can you also give the definitions of terms like “”business casual””?? what in the world does that mean!?

  • Kendall Cox

Yes I would love a work wear post. I work in a office and typically get ready fast in the AM but by the time i get to work i’m not happy with my outfit choice. I’m on a budget and dress very simple but dont want to look sloppy. help!

  • Karleigh Sergio

A work wear post would be great! Although, I think an internship wear post would be amazing as well. Since I am at that stage in school where we have to do an internship it would be great to do a pro and con list of things that are appropriate for internships. If you think clothes for work and an internship are the same, or similar, thats okay one post will do. Thanks for the great posts!

  • gemmin_y

Would very well like to see a work post :), I work in a office, but I do run around a bit in the factory I work in, to give messages and paperwork to people.. So need tips for casual but nice work wear for an office. If that made sense at all..

Would love to read any tip, and thanks for the post, always fun too read them.

  • Aimee S.

I love your post and definitely agree with your choices! I would love to see a post on work outfits! I work in an office where the dress code is casual (jeans ok), unless we have clients coming in, then its more formal (no jeans). It would be great if you can pick out outfits for both.

  • Kellie Norton

I’m a senior in college so it’s a little bittersweet going back to school this fall! Since I’ll be graduating in May and on the job hunt, I’d REALLY love you to do a “”work attire”” blog! That way I can start shopping NOW before I’m a working girl :) thanks Lauren!!

  • Lauren Webster

I would love a work wear post, it is so easy to get stuck in a rut where office clothes are concerned, looking forward to it!

  • Khalid Azani

I would highly recommend doing some work makeover styling tips since a lot lf working ladies stick with the a long skirt/jacket style instead of being more creative, and why don’t you think of styling tips for men, ha? I would really appreciate you thinking about it.

    XO K

  • Ivana Laura Decuzzi

i loved this. made me feel comfortable with my own style, it made me feel even more secure with what i usually wear. a post about work wear would be perfect. i’d like to see what’s appropriate for an office kind of job. i’m also a teacher so that would be helpful if you could include one or two tips for people who work at schools. i’m 23 by the way.

  • Ivana Laura Decuzzi

oh yeah, as someone up there just said, tips for men would be awesome! it could help our boyfriends, brothers and friends a lot heheh =)

  • Kaitlin Norris

I would definitely love a work wear post! Our dress code is business casual and I get in ruts and want to mix it up.

    xoxo Floor (the Netherlands)

  • Shelbi Marx

Oh yes please do a work-wear post!! I need some new CUTE work clothes!

  • Sonya Binne

Yes, please do a work wear post. I work at a preschool. I can get away with black and white jeans at work but not blue shades. I have such a hard time finding cute clothes I can wear around preschoolers. I am constantly bending over, playing on the floor, and going outside wtih them. Any kid friendly fashion tips? I don’t want to spend too much since there is always the chance that paint or markers will ruin something.

  • Jennifer Brodigan

Lovin’ this Tuesdy Ten but would love a work wear post Lauren! I’m a primary school teacher and it’s hard to find the balance between professional and practical, especially when teaching the little ones :)

  • Amanda PeQueen

Oh yes please to work wear! Just graduated and need to update my wardrobe now to reflect career and not just classes.

  • Christine Rosko

I’m a college student in Chicago but I’m also in and out of short-term internships all over the communications world. It would be amazing if you could do a post on how to have items in your closet that could be versatile to both of those fields rather than having to buy two wardrobes for two parts of my life. I often get into a rut with this. Thanks!

  • Megan Babin

I am an online college student so what i wear to class doesn’t matter. But I would definitely love something on work day wear. I am allowed business casual, but I can’t ever find anything cute. So I wear the basic stuff I have in my closet. Any ideas on how to spice up business casual with basics already in the closet. I have tons of cardigans because they are so versatile and so darn cute with everything!!

  • Sarah Montazeri

i would love a post about work wear!!

  • Louise Thomson

I think you should do a top10 must haves for autumn/winter!

  • Lindsey Prather

yes, work wear! I’m an elementary school teacher and, while that lace mini is adorable, if I can’t wear it to work, I’m probably not going to buy it. Clothes for going out are easy to come by, but professional fun outfits are a little trickier.

  • Lauryn Lesovsky

yes yes yes!! I have a bunch of pieces that would look great either in the work place or at nighttime, but don’t know how to style them! maybe a post about different, versatile, key staple pieces in a girl’s wardrobe that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion (or occupation!)

  • Karmele Garcia

Yes, please do a post with some outfit for work tips! I’m just starting but make it a fun work post not boring like typical office :)

  • Lauren Diehl

YES! Please do a work wear post. I absolutely love your style and would like to see what you see as trends for this fall! Sometimes I feel like it is difficult to be office chic yet fashionable at the same time!

This is VERY helpful for me! Thanks!
I think you should do a post on FALL SHOES to wear to school because I have no clue what to wear besides my regular converse and flats!

  • Monica Castillo

I started student teaching on Monday; I went shopping for a new teacher wardrobe and i love dressing up…but I would love more tips from you about tops to wear!

  • I love these clothes. They would also be ideal for work. Sad, it’s better for me to wear old clothes in the lab. And winter in Germany is too wet and cold.

  • Desiree Foppen

    hi Lauren

I would love you to post a blog about what to wear to work, because sometimes i have to wear a uniform and sometimes not, so than i don’t really no what is appropriate to wear in a store

    XO Desiree

P.S this blog gave me alot of advise what to wear to school!

  • malin –

    hi Lauren

I love the relaxed yet stylish way you dress – could you do a more work appropriate version of this blog?

  • Rebecca Hergett

My back to school shopping list consists of brown moto boots, simple white t, jeans, grey cozy scarf (one of the long ones you can wrap around like, a hundred times), a particular sweat from Aritzia and a new toque! I’m also hoping for a new jacket, but I have so many already, it’s last on the list :)

  • Michelle Needham

definitely do a working girl post!

  • Carin

    This is great.
Thank you, I’ll definitely use this!

  • Muriel Burghard

Thank you for the post! Today I had my first ‘real’ day.. jeej.. ( it already started in the Netherlands) and I wore this(link below) blazer to the day we met and took school pictures etc.

http://www.zara.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/nl/nl/zara-W2011/118161/417031/PIQUE%2BBLAZER ( I think that the photo isn’t as beautiful as the blazer in reality is)

  • Molly Meetz

I would love a work wear post! This post would work well for me on the weekends/after work though. Very cute peices!

  • Kristin Albrecht

I would love a work blog! I go to school then straight to a law firm for work. I have to wear to school what I wear to work :(

  • Alexandria Brown

I would love, love, love to see a post on wear-to-work for 20-somethings. I currently have some high-end pieces that I love to mix with really inexpensive goodies and I would love to see more options!

  • Alli Macmann

Good idea posting this. You should have included something relating to make-up, too. Today was my first day of senior year. I went rediculously simple: lime green “”Senior”” t-shirt, cropped jeans, and white tennies. I am also in classes that make it very difficult to dress up every day (Dance and Marching band), so that’s why. Many underclassmen went a little too far in their choice of dress today. I wish they had seen your post first :/

  • Rebecca Kelsey Sampson

Perfect picks! I couldn’t agree more.

  • Katja Anni

A post about work wear would be really cool! :)

    Thanks Lauren!

  • JillianCW

I work in the morning then go straight to school in the afternoon. I would like to see a post about how to transition an outfit from work to school.

  • Tricia McKenley

    Hey Lauren!

Great post. I am out of school and would love a post about work wear. I’m finishing up my maternity leave and will be going back to work in early October and could use some fresh inspiration and fashion tips :)

  • Samantha Campbell

I would love to hear about business casual attire for recent graduates just starting new jobs!

  • heather m

I just got a few of the things on this list while shopping for some new clothes!

I work in an office on campus at my university. I’m often in the president’s office and around other “”important”” people, so I have to look appropriate at work. My issue is that I work in between classes on most days and it’s difficcult to find a good balance between my own quirky-casual personal style and office-appropriate attire. I think that a post about flexible business casual style would be really helpful.

  • Jaclyn Last name

This is a great post as I work and go to school but I would love a post about work wear specifically!

Thanks for the great ideas and inspirations!

This list of top 10 back to school signature items is a list ive brought with me since my senior year of high school. All of these items are so essential and hold a place in either my chest of drawers or my closet. These are all so necessary and I’m glad you got the list with gorgeous examples, out there!

  • Alycia Ceballos

This is probably my favourite style post because I am currently attending university and find that although I absolutely LOVE all of the different attires in all your posts, they are simply not that practical for me. This post has been so useful for me, especially considering the ‘always-on-a-budget’ part if being in univeristy. So these are some great staple items to keep ing mind! Thank you!

  • M.

Yes, Lauren! Please post some “”working-girl”” ideas, specifically fashionable, but appropriate high school teacher ideas!

  • Astrikys
