Currently Craving: Summer Swimwear

Nothing gets me motivated for bikini season like flipping my calendar over to May. The distant smell of sunscreen, ocean and barbeque are nearing, which means it’s time to stock up on fresh new swimwear. It also means I’ll be barraged with dozens of questions from panic stricken friends… What bathing suit is right for me? Should I go trendy or classic?

Well friends, hold your breath because I have you covered with these easy tips for picking the right swimsuit for your body along with my selections for the season’s hottest suits.

Here, I’ll go over which cuts are flattering for your body shape and have listed my favorite suits for each type…

If you’re athletic or boy-shaped… Choose a suit with details at the bust such as ruffles, bows or side ties to add curves. Girly prints and strapless numbers with skimpier cut bottoms also work well for this shape.

If you’re petite or flat chested… Go for slim cuts, bigger prints or vertical stripes to add height and size. If you prefer suits with embellishment, err on the side of small and go for daintier accents.

If you’re pear shaped… Pick a suit with high-cut bottoms and a low-v neckline, such as a string bikini. Also darker colored bottoms with lighter shaded or printed tops work wonders by drawing the eye upwards.

If you’re tall or lanky… Get a swimsuit with some ruffle or bow details to create the illusion of curves. Horizontal stripes and booty-shorts work well too.

If you’re curvy or have a little pooch… Opt for a suit with ruched details and a deep-v neckline. Wide straps or darker side panel details will also help slim you down! Otherwise, small prints are great since they work well to camouflage.

If you’re really busty… Patterned bikinis are the way to go. Just make sure you grab a suit with underwire or a thick band below the bust to ensure support. No need to give fellow sunbathers an impromptu peep show.

If you have an hourglass figure… Plunging necklines and tie sides will flatter your figure best. But, luckily for you, any style is a go (you can thank your mother for that)!

I really love one-piece bathing suits with cutouts. You don’t have to worry about it falling off when you dive into the pool, although it looks like a bikini from the back, and the cutouts add some unexpected sexiness to a style that’s usually considered unsexy. Plus with this suit comes in many different styles so it’s easy to find one that covers up your problem areas and focuses the attention to your best assets.

I love the Miu Miu onepiece with the plunging neck line, powder pink and little feminine bow, but totally sexy.

Zimmerman Lyre Lyre Bikini is my favorite! The color is so subtle, but the contrastlooks great against a tan! I love the little ruffle on the top, so fab!

I have two favorite styles. Halther or bandeau. I am a little bustier so I can’t wear the bandeau for water activies but for laying out and getting some sun, it’s perfect for tan lines!

OMG, I love the scalloped chloe one and the one piece miu miu! The next swim suit I want to buy is a retro one, either a 2 piece with the high waist or a one piece. And wear it with a big floppy hat!

I’m loving the throwback one-pieces. The ones with all the ruching, and the low cuts on the thighs? Modcloth has a really cute one. And I feel like I could pull that off as I’m an hourglass with some stuff that needs hiding! Lol

I really love the athletic or boy-shape, the hourglass figure or in my case and what i use when i’m not in my better shape is curvy. This last one i think is always good, make you look chic and feminine, it really reminds me the ’60s and ’80s.

I love you Lauren! Although I have to say I was disappointed when I didn’t see any pictures where the girls were “”average”” or a little bigger in size. All those girls were so skinny!! Even though they were representing the pear shape. Do you think all girls should look like that?

  • Marie

The problem I have is that my boobs [36D] are VERY heavy and leave my neck dying when I wear my bikini and its sooo hard to find a bikini that’s not tied at the neck. My boobs make everything worse lol

  • Courtney Thompson

I’m larger up top and extra small on bottom. I found this to be the pefect fit because I can stay in my suit & still look adorable.

Hey, ladies! Who’s with me? I feel as though none of these shapes apply to me: petitie with a belly and big thighs. Haha. I’m working on it, but I still feel uncomfortable in my favorite suits! Not sure what to do.

I have really big thighs – like the jut out from my body – they don’t go straight down like any of these pictures.. I can wear any swimmer bottoms because it looks so awful. I finally settled on one from pinupgirlclothing.com I bought a ‘swim skirt’ which covers the whole tummy/upper thigh area. You can wear it with a one piece or a bikini. It will have to do!

I liked the one pieces because I feel better about my self in them.

  • One Piece Bikinis

I love the one piece bikinis with the deep neck lines. They help to lengthen my short torso.
